The Division: 9.5M reg users, 20% season pass attach, top new IP ever, 91% ret vs. 4w

lol someone asked for shipment/sell-through figures for Division and Far Cry. Ubi basically replied 'No. We stopped giving out those numbers'. They also cautioned from looking at the number of registered users and make conclusions about the sell-through because some players have 2 or 3 accounts registered.

You can sue them for millions upon millions in investor fraud if you don't believe you.

Otherwise, we're not having that discussion.

Very surprised with that retention rate as others have said. I think a lot of it is skewed by the fact that the last update came out 4 weeks ago so everyone probably hopped on to at least try it. Anecdotally the game seems to have dropped off a cliff otherwise due to poor endgame, numerous bugs and glitches, lots of grinding, and endless dark zone griefing.

They just clarified the retention number. It is not 91% of the 9.5 million, it's 91% of the people that played 4 weeks ago.

3 hours on average per active user sounds rediculously high.

Only users left are hardcore players. People that wanted to enjoy the game casually have been pushed away by punishing RNG/grind, no new PvE content (Incursion was a joke), and a unbalanced PvP arena (hardcore players hunt "bambi's" for fun).

Was a fun ride while it lasted. Patch 1.2 doesn't seem to be fixing any of the weapon balancing issues (everyone uses an SMG). Patch 1.3 when they do a full reset on the game will be worth revisiting.

Oh so 91% of the hard-core that have been playing are still playing. No surprise in that case. Doesn't mean a whole lot without knowing how many the original number is. Keeping 91% of a 1000 people for example isn't exactly setting the world on fire.

If i heard correctly, the new AAA game will be announced before E3. They will also be announcing 'lots of release dates' at E3.

I played it for three - four weeks, I enjoyed it but I sort of liked going off and exploring by myself seems I should have been leveling up obsessively in those first 4 weeks.

I'll give it another go soon.

the 91 retention number:

"91% of the people who were playing 4 weeks ago are also playing today."

Which means nothing because the 1.1 update that ruined everything released on the 12th.

Yeah...my friends and I all quit the game until they fix everything.

Dark Zone was awesome before all the exploits.

The fuck kind of stat is that?

I have this whole Apple Pie here. I eat 3/4 of it, then pass along a stat that 91% of the 1/4 remaining is still here.

These fucking companies will do and say anything to throw the consumer off. Its quite pathetic. Is that 20% season pass attachment rate a real number or no? Nobody knows.

As far as the game goes, there was no end game worth a shit so myself and everyone i play with either traded it in or uninstalled. I cant believe an end game that bad was given the green light.

Calling Tom Clancy's The Division a "new IP" seems like a bit of a stretch.

It completely is though.

I guess it depends how you feel every time Nintendo releases a game like Mario Kart, Paper Mario, Dr. Mario, is that all the same IP?

Actually, The Division is more distinct, because it's something Clancy didn't even write, it's something someone else wrote and his estate signed off on it because it felt consistent with his world building.

Okay that makes much more sense I was shocked there for a bit. I have about 20-25 people on my friend list that played it daily for the first month or so and now there might be one or two online. Everyone else pretty much dropped it after all the incursion exploiting and shitty 'fixes'.

Oh, that makes more sense.

Calling Tom Clancy's The Division a "new IP" seems like a bit of a stretch.

Is this going to be like that "Bloodborne isn't a new IP" argument all over again?

I would have sold the game weeks ago if I wasn't suckered into buying the season pass at launch.

don't buy season passes at launch

The retention rate blows my mind. I suspect people are just logging in day after day hoping massive has righted the ship only to log out in sheer disappointment.

edit: nevermind. clarification makes much more sense.

So basically, they looked at the Active User chart, saw where it started to flatline, then picked that point as the comparable.

Ubi knows how to IR.

I'd rather see the avg amount of time these people are playing. Like others have said, some people probably just go in, do a mission or two for their phoenix credits and just stop playing for the day.

I haven't bothered logging in for nearly a month now. Just not fun at all.

edit - nm, saw the 3 hours avg.

I think it just shows that season passe might soon come to an end. They make less and less sense with the awake of micro-transactions and other, better, ways to monetise your games post launch.

They wrote it in all caps, giant bold text on their investor slide, so I think they were trying to brag about it.

Mind, also pouring in microtransactions is a great idea, or even just using them. There's a lot of ways to win at digital.

Glad to see Siege still doing well. Each seasonal patch is basically a game refresh. Sure, some of it is playing catchup, but the vast majority is based on player feedback, balancing, and new shit.

3.0 patch is fantastic so far.

Ubisoft believes there will be another console cycle before the model changes to streaming\subscription. They are being pestered with game streaming questions.

The season pass attach rate being 20% before any season pass content is actually out seems actually really high. I figure at least a few people are waiting for the first new maps to actually come out before buying the pass.

Mario Kart is the one I thought of, too. I think it's debatable. Building off the back of an established IP (Tom Clancy, Mario) would make me call it a spin-off, but I guess a spin-off can become its own thing, despite overt callbacks to its source material. Like I said, debatable.

Is this going to be like that "Bloodborne isn't a new IP" argument all over again?

Well, no. Bloodborne didn't overtly reference the Souls games in any way. If Yharnham was called Neo-Boletaria or the game was called Demon's Blood, then sure.

I'm not one of them.......neither are 90% of my friends anymore as well. I loved the game at launch but holy fuck did bugs, lack of content and shit ruin it. Also no dedicated PvP mode(arena pvp) still fucking bugs the shit out of me. Why the hell it was never thought or added blows my mind.

Massive's post launch support has been impressive given all the bugs, cheaters, exploits that surfaced during its first month.

They've been steadily knocking all that stuff out while making improvements to the game itself.

It's not a bad metric to look at this point (as in well after launch); it basically means that the health of the game at the moment is good and people aren't churning even if some fans are complaining about the end game. Pure retention numbers aren't as meaningful (or comparable) as they are on mobile platforms as different cohorts perform much, much more differently than the average on mobile.

These fucking companies will do and say anything to throw the consumer off. Its quite pathetic. Is that 20% season pass attachment rate a real number or no? Nobody knows.
This is not even meant for consumers, it's for investors so frankly accusing them of throwing consumers off is absolute bullshit and ridiculous. Not to mention that the numbers are legally binding. So yes, everyone (expect you and a few others) knows.

As far as the game goes, there was no end game worth a shit so myself and everyone i play with either traded it in or uninstalled. I cant believe an end game that bad was given the green light.
...and I guess you are kind of salty that a title you don't like performs exceptionally well. That end game was given greenlight because by the numbers it seems to be doing very, very well.

No they havent.

New exploits and glitches pop up with every update they put up. IMO the game is worse then ever right now especially after the whole gear score debacle. Just stepping into the community board will tell you this game is FAR from being fixed. 95% of my friends list has stopped playing this game because UBI doesn't know wtf to do with their own game. 1.2 patch will most likely fix things but it will also bring ore exploits and glitches.

I had over 4 days logged into the game before 1.1 but since then I probably have an hour or two at most. Really hoping UBI figures this game out because I purchased the game digitally along with season pass because I LOVED the beta but so far its been a pretty big waste of money.
