Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

As much as I want the Neo myself I do wonder why the timing of this now. Why is this a thing that they're doing this year rather than next? PS4 sales are absolutely steam rolling ahead and I can't imagine they were at all worried by Nintendo's NX, should it have come out this year. And Microsoft's next system is clearly further out than the Neo which I presume Sony would have some idea about.

It does feel like they've jumped the gun a bit, which is even weirder considering they're obviously going to be pushing PSVR this year, so to complicate the message like this about a new console seems strange. Wonder what prompted it. Were they just trying to get way ahead of Microsoft or what? Genuine Q, and yeah I know these decisions are all made years in advance usually, which makes it even stranger they'd do this and clash with the PSVR launch. Neo should have been something only even hinted at once PSVR was out the door, because unlike some, I know Neo isn't some remedy for PS4's apparent failing in regards to PSVR. It has little, if anything to do with PSVR.
because it's just a better Ps4 not a Ps5. You guys are creative a narrative man. All the doom and gloom comes from us, all the talk of games running like crap on PS4, comes from here. It's just an upgrade, they aren't starting a new gen.

No NX was suddenly a step ahead. Huh.

Still very much looking forward to whatever games are shown. But I was a bit excited to see our first step-up console. (Scorpio is looking to be a lot bigger than just a step from what little I've read).

Microsoft announces you can run the Xbox UI on your PC and play all Xbox One Games.

Both console's hardware becomes irrelevant.

Oh I get it. Wait for Microsoft to go first so they get the backlash ant anti-consumer tag. Then announce it with a rehash of what was planned, appearing to be pro-consumer, to rapturous applause and standing ovations. Never seen that before

Hahahaha

Its a traaaaappppp!

It's 3 years in, people who are waiting to buy a console wouldn't buy watered down hardware to buy games shown at e3 that will look inferior on said console. What logic are you using?
What logic are you using?

1) A lot of people have waited to buy a PS4, because they don't want to pay ~$300 for a gaming console. Some people will only pay $250 for a new console (ordinary PS4).

2) Some hardcore gamers will pay $399 or more for a more powerful PS4.

People 1 won't disappear all of a sudden, just because a more expensive/powerful PS4 got announced.

Good on Sony for doing this. Press would no doubt ask them about it all during E3. This eliminates that and we all know it exists which means they can focus on their E3.

Most likely being reworked in the face of Scorpio rumours / internal intelligence.

No way in hell it's being reworked. I think Sony didn't want their entire conference to be about PSVR and trying to sell the Neo. Yeah it's 2 hours long but that's a lot of hardware talk even for them with 2 items on the table.

Ok so no launch this year. So when is PS5 coming out? 2020?

19 or 20 probably.

Nailed it. I still can't believe people on this site really believe that executives on six-figure salaries read NeoGAF rumour threads and change their plans accordingly.

I don't know if they change their plans...but the best place to be heard as a consumer in this industry is here...they do read this forum

I heavily, heavily doubt that. Dev kits are out there and have been for some time and the plans is to have games ready for the platform from the end of September. In no way are they going to 'rework' it by now.

After Neo the won't be another gen Iguess. I think It will progress as Ipad, IPhone etc.

Man there has been so much delusion regarding the Scorpio I have no seen since the NX power delusions.

$299, 6.1TF, cloud 2.0, September 2016 release.

But yeah, people should either reduce expectations, or except for this kind of power they'll be waiting till 2017.

For real. It's a PS4 that will look better on 4K TV's, nothing more, nothing less. Maybe in the future there will be more to it, but not when it's initially released.

Surprised that the standard PS4 is gonna continue to be sold for the rest of the gen. I assumed the Neo existed because it was gonna be cheaper to manufacture in the long run and the standard one would eventually be phased out.

If there is a price drop, some people will continue to purchase PS4's but if everything being shown Sony related is being shown at a higher resolution than vanilla PS4 or on a pc why would I spend $300 to play a watered down version of a game rather than waiting for a proper console to come out???

This would make a great N4G or Gamefaqs headline.

As if it's so hard to believe? Sony set a precident for doing this exact thing with the original PS4 launch. They heard the XB1 had 8 GB of RAM so they scrambled to add 4GB, since the original PS4 specs only had 4GB. They waited on MS to announce the price of the XB1, then they turned around and decided to unbundle the PS Camera from the system and charge $100 less than MS in the few hours between MS' press conference and their own. It isn't as if Sony hasn't actively been waiting on MS to show their hand first so they can undercut them this entire generation.

As well as from what Andrew House specifically stated. PS4 to Neo optimisation seems relatively painless and it's up to devs to decide how much they want to do with the extra grunt they will have available.

Everything will run fine, as it was always going to Neo or not, on the PS4 base model. Cannot be stressed enough. The Neo isn't even as much of a departure that would tempt devs to design the game around Neo then put out a terrible PS4 version. We all know they'd be roasted alive if such a shoddy situation occurred anyway, plus for the foreseeable future PS4 will always have the much higher install base between the two.

Good post, I have been saying similar in other Neo threads. When the Neo releases there will be 50million+ PS4s which will continue to sell (probably at a new lower price). The way it will turn out is the PS4 will run the same games at Medium settings while the Neo will be at high.

I forgot UC4 was running on a PC and TLG too. Damn Sony always using a PC.

It's a smart move for Sony. If they announce the Neo, all the questions will be about that and no one will be talking about PSVR. PSVR is what they need to push and market now since that carries the biggest risk. The Neo doesn't need to be revealed until a couple months before release.

It was smart of Sony to announce this now and get control of the messaging. Makes sense for Sony (and MS) not to undercut their game showcases by announcing improved hardware at the show.

Allegedly there is already dev kits out for the Neo (?) so...

Do you think there wont be another iteration?

The PS5.

Same reason people are buying PS4's now when PC is way better.....Most people don't care about resolution. Ask yourself why PS2 dominated the way more powerful Xbox. Higher resolution is not going to turn the tides. Last I checked a lot of games on PS4 are only on PS4, and not on any other platform. Proper console? What do you mean proper console?

As I have previously explained, because of these incremental upgrades, I will not buy this nor any consoles anymore in the future. (Unless Nintendo massively steps up their game)

Did those actually happen?

I don't think MS is going to reveal Scorpio now. The rumors were that they were only going to do it because the Neo was expected to be revealed as well (which was earlier than they thought). If the Scorpio is truly not going to make it before holiday 2017, they'll wait as long as they can to reveal it. At best we'll get a confirmation that it exists just like this one.
