Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

I remember those rumors said along the lines of Sony "may" go with a more powerful CPU. They probably got wind of MS's plans and are adjusting to it, after all, AMD has new products available obviously, or shortly available.

This news sucks though, I was hoping for it to be a 4K/UHD BD-player, and wanted to get one and I refuse to buy that junk samsung model. At this rate, OPPO will have theirs out and I'll end up with that. Which will obviously be far more expensive lol.

People need to drop that fancy idea of Sony changing their plans because there is a rumour about Microsoft doing whatever.

People also need to drop the idea that Microsoft is somehow immune to the laws of heat, power draw, component costs, and their own shareholders. Both companies have access to the same vendor, the same hardware, and the same costs. Whatever Microsoft is capable of, so is Sony. Either company can completely scrap their plans, change things out, and do whatever they feel is necessary to hit their company's visions.

We're in an age where devkit documentation equates to unfounded, without question truth.

Prove to me that sony knows any of that.

Are you serious?

Sony knows more about the Neo than you do - you cannot possibly know more than the creator of the Neo does about their own console.

It's also likely that Sony has insider knowledge on the Scorpio that may not have leaked - though admittedly that's less of a sure bet.

4K Bluray, for as beautiful as it may be, is about as important to the mainstream consumer in 2016 as a standalone HiFi DSD FLAC Player. In 2006 Netflix, Amazon Instant, and the ilk hadn't reached their meteoric commercial penetration, but in 2016 the world revolves around streaming to such an extent that Bluray sections are outright going way the of the Dodo.

I don't understand the concept of being happy for no hardware talk at E3. So what if it makes more time for games. What's more exciting really?

- One additional game announcement or a few more minutes spent on each game already in the presentation.
- Revealing new, more powerful hardware that will make every game you play better.

I want that hardware announced and in my home ASAP.

I'm really glad this won't be shown at E3. More time for ACTUAL games than new hardware.

This.

I think it's fine that they aren't. It's too early if it's not coming until Fall or perhaps 2017, and in addition to all of the usual big main games they'll be announcing they also need to have time to announce more VR games that are on the way.

The problem is that if it's not coming out ASAP, then announcing it so early may slow some sales.

Can you link to this post please?

Its the first one months ago, where he started the Neo leak specs. He has then repeated this numerous times using the Matrix analogy and I think somewhere in the Scorpio thread he was even teasing that things change. Most missed it.

Its maybe 5 or 6 posts spread over this time. I always reply to his post and ask him for more, as for me this is really insightful into what sony are doing ...

For me its to zen or not to zen, thats the only reason you would add allot of price over a Jaguar at + 30 % and maybe stall a bit.. which could put them back a few months maybe, depends how far AMD are along...

I recall jeff Rigby stating CPU upgrade could be excavator instead of Jaguar (Puma +) or something, he lost me as usual bless him.

I don't get this "devs will target Neo and gimp OG PS4" FUD that's being spread. Devs also have to target Xbone, so on what planet are devs/pubs going to produce gimped content for an existing 60 million userbase simply because Neo is out?

Any why have Sony quietly acknowledged the existence of Neo but aren't showing it? Just look at this thread, zero talk of VR. That's Sony's big E3 push from a hardware perspective. Revealing Neo would massively distract from that.

Edit: on a separate note, check out the user post count for this thread. It's really telling. Lol.

Ah so you can't prove it. Ok thanks

We don't have access to their stuff, so how could we prove it? It's like saying prove that the president knows more about what's going in the US and other countries than we do. We don't have access to their stuff to directly prove it, but it's pretty obvious anyway and needs no real proving.

You're asking him to prove that a multibillion dollar company knows more about their and their competitors strategies than a bunch of fans scrounging over leaks and are strategizing accordingly? That's essentially a given. You prove the opposite.

I would be perfectly happy with Sony and MS focusing on software and hardware revisions. Of course PSVR will be there, but I have a hard time caring without interesting software to back it up.

Yep, it makes more sense for devs to target the current models, then crank up effects and framerate for Neo and Scorpio.

I mean would it be too much of a stretch to say that it's common sense that the PlayStation division- a company made up by a ton of industry veterans, games journalists, international development teams, and a history that reaches two decades- would have ZERO inkling or estimation as to what their competitors are doing? Do you think Adam Boyes and Shu Yoshida are refreshing Kotaku religiously to find out the latest scoops on Scorpio?

The reality is: Both companies are buying from the same vendor. They both have access to roadmaps, cost parameters, and suggestions based on developer feedback, vendor support, and internal projections. They don't make these calculated multi-billion dollar decisions because a thread on NeoGAF has a gif of Phil Spencer with a worn out joke about astrology.

The end of days is real, doom's day is near.

Joke and exageration aside, i dislike Sony pushing a new model that is basically a new pointless console that is nothing but trouble for the OG PS4 but on the otherhand i understand that they have put themselfs in a corner with PSVR, the new model might be future proofing their platform so publishers can keep releasing VR games in playstation if/when OG PS4 falls short.

Yea I'm surprised people assumed that. The launch window could be from q1 2017 to q4 2017

To be fair, I think the main reason people have thought that it is because some news/rumors got out that games are supposedly going to start shipping with a Neo setting sometime in the Fall. It could still launch this year or next year though.

Then you haven't been paying attention to the last E3? How about the last 2 PSXs?
Or any other large event that had PSVR? Maybe this E3 you will remember?

It's been in the hands of people to try for over 2 years at numerous events.

Let me preface this by saying I haven't regularly browsed gaming side in years, so I'm not up to date in specifics of all the rumors or anything.

The comparison to the phone market as an excuse for consoles to have biennial upgrades from now on is stupid. I use my phone to text, make calls, and browse the internet, not to play games. So the power of the phone means almost nothing to me. The whole fucking point of getting a console instead of PC gaming is not having to worry about the constant upgrades. You get one piece of hardware that will give you a standard, universal level of performance for 5-7 years.

That certainly wasnt the point of consoles for me. It was more lower cost / game types / ease of use / little box under tv. Rate of updates really wasnt part of the equation for me.

And I think console makers are in a bind due to tech. In the past with custom silicon/architectures they could put out hardware that was ahead of pc for part of a cycle. Thats no longer true with there being power/form factor limitations as well as price ones. And severly loss leasing consoles are a thing of the past. The PS3 was the last gasp of that model.

They simply cannot make a console thats equiv today to say a i7 or i5 with 1070 and put it in a console form factor and price it reasonably. Instead we get more moderate/lower cost hardware more frequently. Which seems reasonable to me if we get more stable software compatibility as we get on pc and ios devices.

Yeah 60 million is the obvious target, crazy all the other talk.

How do you do a post count by poster, I just cannot seem to do it.

Does 4K resolution confirm 4K blu ray support? Or am I reading that wrong?

4K bluray support does in no way shape or form garuntee 4K bluray support. The only thing it confirms is that the machine has the potential to play 4K content- downloaded or otherwise. However, disc playback sounds like an expensive measure that most consumers would like to see cut from the total cost.

It's gonna be a very interesting second half of the generation to see how the player base responds to the business change, given the average age of people who buy games is now 35.

What exactly did he mean with that red or blue comment.

Within the context of what he was replying to it reads to me like he was reiterating that Sony had two specs shortlisted. May be between Osiris's original thread and now Sony have decided to go for the higher spec and next year?

I really doubt that though given Andrew House just confirmed Neo's existence. Sony would surely have kept silent if they were always going for next year and Zen? Plus all the dates in the dev docs etc....

Whatever the case is I really doubt a Zen CPU or anything other than boosted Jaguar is in Neo. We'll have to wait and see..... again.
