Watching the LiveCast coverage, the Marvel Games guy mentioned that a bunch of the guys from Insomniac working on the game have been life-long Marvel fans and that is so reassuring to hear. I love how Rocksteady's members are such big Batman fans, and that clearly helped the games, so I was hoping that whoever would work on the next big Marvel game would be big fans too. This is just such wonderful news. Really happy now with Insomniac.
This isn't a movie tie-in, but Peter Parker is the main Spider-Man. It's like doing your first big Batman game without Bruce Wayne.

Oh my God. Thank you! I love Miles, I really do. I've read everything he's been in as far as I know, and I am so happy that he's Spider-Man in the 616 now (I don't care what all y'all editors say, it'll always be the 616 to me) and that his book is simply titled "Spider-Man," but for fuck's sake, he's a legacy character. He is a great character all on his own, but a big part of him is still living up to that legacy. Although, yeah, it feels different now that he's living in the same universe with Peter, but still. The parallel I often use is what if the DC Extended Universe used Dick Grayson as its Batman, and not just as the current, but its original Batman. That's just wrong. A lot of times I see people arguing, saying that they should have Miles just because he's African American, and I think that's downright racist because they're ignoring the character and just looking at his race.

They said that Marvel went to them and Sony really wanted to do it straight away. Once it was agreed Sony went to insomniac.

Gotcha, Thanks.

They talk about Spider-Man @ 14:55

Interesting that Marvel wanted to work with Sony and position the game as a First Party title. Between this and the Kojima partnership SIE must have quite the reputation.

I wonder if we may see more Marvel-Sony collaborations in the future if all goes well.

They've stated they want to make more games like this, so if this is successful will we see more of these types of games

I'd be down with DickBats. But that might be because I think literally every hero in Gotham is more interesting than Bruce.

Still and all, it'd be neat for a sequel to this to have more playable Spider-people in it, but you'd have to have something that differentiates gameplay since they're all REALLY similar.

That trailer is fucking humming with enthusiasm. I can see the men and women at Insomniac just vibrating at the notion of developing a Spider-Man game. Activision has had the license for decades, and they have never made anything that rises above mediocre.

Spider-Man on PS1 was a charming game hampered by early 3D tech. Spider-Man 2: The Movie: The Game (the one I worked on!), had a promising swing engine with mediocre everything else. Ultimate Spider-Man oozed style, but lacked the swing engine of SM2, had a better story, but was still incredibly mediocre, with an abrupt ending that felt like the game just stopped halfway through the story. Web of Shadows was the first Spidey game that felt enjoyable to play. The game design was repetitive as fuck, but the swinging felt a little better than previous games not SM2, and the story was appropriately comic booky. I actually liked this one, but was slightly above average. Shattered Dimensions, and Edge of Time suffered from the same budget crippled, just trying to cash in on the license mediocrity as the others, and the two ASM movie games were just not good (although ASM2 was better than 1, it was really bland game design).

This is the first time in the history of Spider-Man games that we are getting a game released on proper technology, with a developer that has an incredible pedigree (Insomniac makes absolutely charming and fun games, with Fuse being the only real "meh" game), a passion for the character, and the backing of a first party publisher and console manufacturer. This is literally the Spider-Man game us fans have been dreaming of, but have been settling for what we've been given previously. I've purchased every ATVI Spidey game, because I adore the character and that was all I had. I'm excited as fuck for this game. When that reveal happened, I was bouncing off the walls. My wife was grinning from ear to ear, because she digs Spidey too, and knows that Insomniac makes great games.

Also, to the folks that maybe have just gotten onto the Insomniac hype train, if you have a PS3, please check these games out:

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Quest For Booty, A Crack in Time (one of the best PS3 games ever, let alone one of the best R&C games), and Into the Nexus. If you don't want to play the HD collection of the Original 3 R&C titles, the Future series is a great introduction, although I'd hate for you to miss out on probably the best R&C title, Up Your Arsenal. Ratchet and Clank on PS4 is an amazing reimagining of the first game, and good entry point as well.

Play the Resistance trilogy. The first is an awesome alternate history WW2 game with aliens. The second one gets a lot of shit, but it's a wonderful FPS with an interesting story, clean graphics, an impressively lengthy campaign for the genre, and creative weapons that insomniac is known for. The third is a great finale to the series, and has the best pacing, weapons, level design, and narrative of the series. A criminally underrated game, and one of the best FPS games of last gen.

I haven't played Sunset Overdrove, since I don't own an Xbox ONE, but it looks wonderful, and seems to feature all of the textbook Insomniac specialties. I'm sure those that have played it can vouch for it more than me, but Insomniacs track record makes me confident in saying that it will at least be fun.

Fuse was weak, but props for them trying to expand their portfolio. The spin off Ratchet games like All For One an Full Frontal Assault are actually quite fun, but know that they are NOT the typical R&C formula. Still good buys, but the Future games, PS4 Remake, and Resistance trilogy are essential Insomniac purchases.

Spider-Man has literally never been in better hands.

Fuck that read like a shill...

Where's my check, Insomniac?! (Or copy of Spider-Man PS4 when it releases? Heh heh)

Disagree with you regarding Bruce there. Regarding the different Spiders, though, you can take a look at Marvel Future Fight on iOS and Android to see what that can be like. It's the best and, well, only example at the moment, but I think it does a pretty good job of differentiating them.

Peter's the standard Spider-Man, of course. Miles' animations are a little more acrobatic than Peter's, but I think that's just because Peter was one of the earliest characters so they didn't think to make something more agile, as well as using his unique venom strike and camouflage powers. My favourite, Silk, is much faster than all the other Spiders, which makes sense considering the fact that she's faster than Peter, canonically. She also uses her claws and can cause bleeding, in addition to creating some weapons out of her webs. After all, she has all sorts of different organic webbing. Spider-Gwen is flashier than the others in a fitting way that matches her punk-rock aesthetic and personality. Her web shot attack animation, for example, has her doing this cool jump/flip thing to the side while firing multiple shots. Her web swing kick has her doing somersaults and shit.

I hope that one day, they can introduce Spider-Man 2099. I'd love to see what they can do with him, although I imagine it will also involve his claws--and possibly his fangs? Okay, maybe not his fangs. He would fight more violently, I think. Possibly visceral, given his temper and rage in the recent stories.

Oh, there's also Doc Ock as Superior Spider-Man in Future Fight (which is just awesome because Netmarble didn't just make a skin for Ock, he plays completely differently, animations and all) which... doesn't really stand out much. He uses some gadgets and attacks with the "spider legs" behind him but that's about it.

So, yeah, I don't think it would be that hard to differentiate them because they all have some things that make them unique.

Super glad this came from Insomniac. That way people get their high quality Spiderman game, but Sucker Punch can still work on whatever it is they want.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Why don't I feel as hyped as I did for the Beenox games?

Lmao what is with me, the trailer just did nothing for me

Damn that trailer looked better than the entire Beenox game. Are you sure you're not dead and stuck in the Sixth Sense?

I wonder how they'll handle the swinging gameplay.

Make it super intricate, or make it automatic like (since Spiderman just knew what to do on the spot when it came to web slinging, freeing him up to do other things).

Either way, trailer is pretty awesome and fast paced.

I've got the first issue. He hasn't done anything for me. Maybe I'll give it another read but the guy just seems such meh character compared to Peter.

I don't know if it would be possible, but I want it to be as good as the Civil War web tricks (two web anchor points to angle your swing in a particular way for example). Web/lasso swinging tech should be amazing these days. So many games use tethers, grapples, physics, and all kinds of strings. I'm sure Insomniac will make sure it feels and play good, and I'm sure they have to make it look good.

So what are everyone's hopes regarding main villains (besides Mr. Negative)?

They should definitely target the lesser known or at least newer villains for this first game to keep things new and refreshing for a Spiderman game. If there's a sequel they can bring back the more classic villains.

Kingpin and other crime lord type people as the main villains with a super villain here and there would be cool.
Green Goblin should be major though as Osborne is apparently running for mayor.
Also Black Cat as half hero half villain.

I guess Marvel got burned hard by the way Activision is treating spiderman game so they want someone to really take it seriously. a platform holder like Sony know how big this could be and won't treat it like Activision did. the fact that Playstation is also the biggest console this generation also helps.

Has it been confirmed that this was running in realtime? Sony likes to show pre-rendered footage when a game is not that far along. This is probably this year's Uncharted 4 "running on a PS4" except they never said it was running on a PS4. The way the shots are cut, there is no way these are gameplay angles.
Dynamic camera angles of gameplay have been used since forever. It's pretty easy to tell which part is gameplay and which isn't.

Also, if the footage is pre-rendered, there wouldn't those scenes with shitty frame rate at the end.

Yes it was. And not by Sony but by a team member.

lowkey kinda think this'll end up being a Spring 2018 game and that's so far away

i'd like to see them go with a central main villain (Goblin maybe) with more obscure villains reserved for side missions. so basically like Arkham lol

Which may not bode well for the chances of a Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.

Sorry I don't trust Sony. If the trailer is indeed in realtime, it looked amazing. It looks like playing a movie. Why wasn't it playable on the show floor? Weird.

Who is a lesser-known character that can deliver bombast, push Parker to his limits, and through the villain, we can get a good glimpse of Parker and what makes him tick? Also should be a villain with a good amount of pathos or charisma.

Let's assume they won't use a villain already used in film right away (unless they're going for a Sinister Six setup). Film villains so far:

Green Goblin
Hobgoblin
Venom
Doc Ock
Lizard
Electro
Sandman

What don't you trust lol? Also tons of games aren't playable on the show floor so they must be all fake out cg!

This means nothing. You can say this about any game that didn't get a CG trailer that was shown in any conference for the past decade or so. They didn't want to show it or it wasn't ready to be shown yet.

That's because IMHO Sony has the best developers in the industry, Nintendo devs are overrated... but that's just what i think.

I'd attribute these deals to Sony's reputation for being a consistently successful global gaming company, which is something neither MS nor Nintendo can ever claim to be.

Publishers/devs will naturally want to side with Sony due to that; also, being the runaway market leader this gen will definitely help secure top-tier exclusive content.

Nintendo isn't overrated. They do a certain kind of games, and they're good at them, and the people who like those games certainly think that way.

Sony makes other kind of games, which has become pretty obvious with TLOU, A Thief's End, God of War and even Days Gone.

Anyway, I was pretty hyped, and my brother was with me in that very moment they announced it and he got pretty hyped. After Sunset Overdrive, I trust Insomniac.

Is it? Sony Pictures owns the rights to the Spiderman movies. It's possible there were less licensing issues and stuff to deal with
