Pokémon GO is now the biggest mobile game in U.S. history (by peak DAU)

Not much impact impact on NX handheld, I don't think. People already have a phone, NX is a barrier to entry.

I'm thinking of this from another angle; Pokemon Go is a gateway for non-gamers, non pokemon fans etc to get into pokemon/gaming with minimal effort. It's hard to imagine there won't be a positive impact on NX sales as a result should there be an extended version of Pokemon Go on NX or some compatibility between Pokemon NX and Pokemon Go etc.

A lot of variables involved there though, and it's far too early to make any real educated guesses here imo.

For what it's worth, this isn't really a Nintendo game on mobile. It's a Nintendo brand on mobile. Nintendo doesn't really make games like this.

Also, somewhat unrelated but I see this as most similar to collecting Pokemon cards, not playing the TCG but collecting the cards. It's a very similar business model where you're using the brand to drive demand for collecting the Pokemon and then you're creating value by imposing a sort of scarcity. Then you can charge money based on the value you've created.

Well it's a little more complicated than that, but that's the idea I think.

People at my job who never play video games are playing/talking about it. It's fucking insane!

yep. this is blowing my mind. People from whom I've never heard even the mention of a game (mobile or otherwise) are playing this.

Do any of stock-age gaf members know why it went up 100% in march 2015? Was that when Nintendo announced it would release games on smartphone?

It was announced march 16-17, 2015. Together with NX.

I agree, but the only reason this game is popular is because of the pokemons, and Nintendo made them.

Well I'm pointing it out because I want people to think about a Nintendo mobile future would be like when the big game here is something unlike what they've ever made before.

I know a lot of people don't like Nintendo anyway and would think of it as nothing lost, but think about what it would be like if your favorite game was told to be more like Pokemon GO.

A Nintendo on mobile wouldn't really be Nintendo as we've known them. It would be something else, something with the Nintendo brands but not with the same kind of games and not with the same kind of developers.

Today -4%. So seems like the peak has been reached.

not necessarily. it's just profit taking. I'm hopeful for more movement after this thing is finally released worldwide.

On one hand, yes, this helps the brand overall and that can help sales going forward.

But on the other, Pokemon GO is a success partly because it didn't require Average Joe to buy one of those geeky handheld things that can only play games and can't even make a phone call.

I'm just not sure what can be extrapolated from this in regards to the NX handheld.

I just got a company email that one of our US offices was a pokestop or something like that. Employees were freaked out since there were bunch of cars parked on the side of the road and people were pointing phone cameras in the office direction.

This shit is huge, never seen anything like that.

There were no PokeStops or Gyms in downtown Austin or on the UT campus, etc. They have to port them over from Ingress and they hadn't done it for whatever reason. Either due to the app update or just sort of in conjunction with it, they were all enabled yesterday.

So it went from nothing to this yesterday (this is a part of UT, including 2 stop at my building):

Man you guys in bigger cities are so lucky. I'm in a town of about 100,000 and I've only found one place where two PokeSpots overlap.

Things I've found on quora
- Nintendo takes 10% revenues coming from the app stores (they are a investor of Niantic) - Nintendo also holds 30% Pokemon Company.
- Pokémon Go will need to create around $140 million to $196 million in turnover each month to have a significant impact on Nintendo's profits.

I don't think it leads anywhere positive.

Yes, people are becoming aware or reminded of the brand, they're engaging in it. But I think you're right, significant portions of those people will not, in any circumstance, be interested in carrying an extra device. Probably some are not willing to pay for software at all, at least unless they can start it first.

Not saying I like it, but I think this game's runaway success shows what power a strong brand plus software suited to the platform has whenever the platform is something that nearly everyone already has in their pocket at all times.

HeartGold and Black 2 are incredible. Good for you!

I'm pumped. I haven't played a Pokemon game since Gen 2 Gold and Silver. Finding them at reasonable prices was crazy. Amazon prices were like 70 bucks for HeartGold and same for FireRed. Luckily I was able to find a FireRed listed for 30 bucks and Gamestop had HeartGold online for 40.

I searched for the quora answer, and I don't think it's correct:

In fact, analysts estimate that out of $100 spent on Pokemon Go in-app purchases, the Silicon Valley giants take their respective 30%, then 30% go to the game developer Niantic, another 30% will go to the Pokemon franchise, and about 10% are left for Nintendo.

If I go by this:

Google/Apple take 30%
10% for the IP > directly to nintendo
30% for TPC (of which nintendo owns 33%) = Nintendo takes 10%
of which creatures inc owns 33% of which nintendo owns ??% = Nintendo takes between 1-10%
30% goes to Niantic (of which nintendo owns ??%) = nintendo takes ??%

So nintendo ends up taking anything between 21 and 40%, depending on how much of Creatures Inc and Niantic it owns. 40% would be if it would hold 33% stock in each, which is the absolute maximum.

Is it a good game or a gimmick that Nintendo will latch in to like wii. I see people act like it's amazing girl but I have no idea what it is

Not sure why people are so happy about it if it keeps Nintendo away from thier old serves though.

The better games like that do the more bad it is for me and wanting hardcore Nintendo games again.

This is like Nintendo death for me unfortunately

Really going out on a limb there, eh?

Thats like saying a Kickstarter is going to get less money in week two.

Not really, how many people do you think will continue with the game 4 months from now. The die hards, and people interested in pokemon for sure, miitomo did really well when it launched then it died.

Pokemon is a huge brand so this game will continue to be successful, just not in the numbers were seeing currently wait for everyone to get it, and see how many people stay and do tournament battles when those are added down the line. or even if they are.

I think you missed the sarcasm in that post

Cool. Too bad I have a Windows Phone...

Nintendo Badge Arcade would be pretty cool if you could get wallpapers and badges you could use as icons on your home screen.

I also have a Windows Phone but it hasnt stopped me from playing it.

Use an Android Tablet with GPS and turn your phone into a hotspot.

Pokemon is in my top 3 favorite franchises of all time. Nothing was going to stop me from playing this.

But I was told Nintendo going mobile would devalue their franchises and undermine their current games

I've also been told their biggest franchises wouldn't be popular on ps4/xbox1

Somebody who said something to you once was wrong about that thing, therefore everything else you believe is also correct.

Edit: As for the whole "this will die in the winter" thing, I really don't see it. Obviously going forward the user levels won't be as massive as they are during this current viral overload phase, but remember that they have like 550 more Pokemon to release into the wild. Once it starts getting cold, if they start to see numbers and income drop, all they have to do is give everyone a push notification with Professor Willow saying that 30 new Ice Type Pokemon have woken up from their summer hibernation and are now wandering in the wild waiting to be caught. Throw in some ice legendaries and you'll see a nice spike. If they space out the new Pokemon that get released into the wild in an engaging way, people will keep coming back.

He means that what you predicted is beyond obvious.

Precisely. From Nintendo's perspective, it's a piece of (very successful) merchandise and, if they're lucky and smart, promotion for their IP and business. At the end of the day, they didn't make it, no matter how good it is, and it doesn't represent what Nintendo's staff and infrastructure exists for.

Not sure what you mean because I remember you said the Galaxy games didn't interest you and those are as hardcore as it gets. Can you name some Nintendo 1st party games released in the past that fit under your definition of hardcore?

The success of Pokemon Go is fantastic news for those who are looking forward to new Nintendo hardware, finding growth elsewhere and having additional revenue streams alleviates pressure from NX. Those who loved 3DS and Wii U shouldn't worry, we'll get a new handheld and console that plays sequels to popular current gen games like Splatoon and Hyrule Warriors.

I disagree. If they would port it to NX with extra features (PVP and "bigger" battles for example) and without it draining your phones battery I'm sure some people would be interested.
Don't know if that is something they are considering or not, but if I was Nintendo that would be something I'd definitly look into.
Oh, I'm sure some people would be interested. Enough people that would be happy to plonk down $200 for a handheld though, to play a game already available for free on their pre-existing smartphone? I doubt it.

I'm in business school with 26-35 year Olds and snapchat is used constantly. Snapchat is primarily teen oriented but there are millions of people older that use it frequently.

that seems like a lot of work just to play this. Waving your tablet around I mean.

People working hard to let everyone know Nintendo's relationship with the series. Steaming at the ears even, haha.

This game is killer. It's still clunky as fuck but it'll get better and it's actively taking over the world.

Man you guys in bigger cities are so lucky. I'm in a town of about 100,000 and I've only found one place where two PokeSpots overlap.

It could very well be a similar case where they just haven't moved everything over from Ingress yet. Austin looked like Japan before yesterday at 5:00 PM but now there are landmarks all over.

This is me looking in a different direction than my other pic, but it's representative of how it appeared before yesterday afternoon.

There were no Stops or gyms for anyone in Central Austin until yesterday at roughly 5:00 PM. Turns out there is a subreddit devoted to ATX PoGo actually -- here's a post from someone yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemongoAustin/comments/4sjo4c/downtown_austin_is_live/. Sounds like lots of additions to North and East Austin as well... so basically, the city in general got a huge bump it seems. :)
