Horror-GAF |OT|

Watched Holidays on Netflix last night, and really enjoyed it. To be fair, I enjoy pretty much any and every horror anthology - but this one was particularly interesting. It's a dark-comedy and the tone of unconventional humour is set pretty early on. Considering I'm one of the very few that actually enjoyed Creepshow 3, that wasn't a bad thing at all for me. St. Patrick's Day got a little cheesy at the end, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Easter and Christmas were probably my favourites. Kevin Smith's story (Halloween) was a huge letdown. I'm a big fan of his, and even though you could see Kevin's touch all over the story, it came up really short.

Anyway, it's worth checking out if you're into something that's kind of creepy, but mostly just bizarre. There haven't been a lot of great anthologies lately, so it's not like the bar is set very high anyway.

Finally saw the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While I think it dragged in some scenes and it's not shocking as it probably was 40 years ago, man, it had some really unsettling scenes.

I really liked that opening. The creaking nails-on-chalkboard camera shutter with the shots of body parts and remains really set the raw tone and atmosphere perfectly

Leatherface's debut was fantastic. I wish more horror movies did that. No build-up, no creepy music or perspective shots or obvious "time-to-reveal-the-monster" set-up. Just broad daylight, Leatherface out of nowhere, hammer to the skull, slam the door. So effective

And of course the dinner scene was just like 15 minutes of madness. Terrifying nightmare stuff, from bringing Grandpa down to him sucking the blood to them sitting around the table and Sally's chair having literal arms and bringing out the hammer.

Probably the most interesting thing about the movie was how much it happens during the day. That makes it scarier in a way. The tropes of modern horror condition you not to expect horrible stuff to go down during the day, and especially not with the suddenness of TCM's horror

TMC was here banned for decades and suddenly released and when I watched it I had no idea why it was banned. The movie is terror and one of the most shocking things Ive ever saw, but anything but not violent.

TCM is scary for the sheer randomness and quickness of it all. I bought the second on Bluray after seeing clips in a horror class I took and haven't watched it yet, looks funny though.

You should watch the remake, one of the best horror remakes.

Heh, considering it's one of the Michael Bay-produced remakes alongside Nightmare, Hitcher, and Friday the 13th, I'm going to assume that's sarcasm

No, really! I honestly didn't hate the remake. It was one of my coming of age horror films when I was in...8th-9th grade. I haven't seen it in forever and a half, but I do remember it being a pretty wild film.

In regards to the original, one of the most peculiar things about it is that we have no idea how much money it actually made because the mob was involved in the production of the film.

It's definitely the best out of those 4. It's not bad either, R. Lee Ermey kills it and the Leatherface in that one is very menacing. It's honestly one of the better remakes. I recommend TCM 2 as well, it's my favorite of the series but much more light hearted. Dennis Hopper is absolutely amazing. Just don't expect it to be 'scary' or anything. It's more of a horror-comedy.

So I decided to give Let Us Prey a shot last night, and yeah not a fan. Acting was not good, the last act was really weird and disjointed from the rest of the movie, and the whole thing just kinda felt like three 30 minute movies in one by the time I was done. End movie spoiler:
The battering ram kill was unique though.

TCM Remake is a decent recommendation, bit creepy at times, i was so dissapointed with how the prequel turned out though :(

I Agree , The Beginning was pretty bad. My guilty pleasure is liking Texas Chainsaw 3D. Yeah the dialogue is awful but Leatherface looks great and it's pretty gruesome (shame the only way to see the uncut one is via digital).

Giallo update!

I finally got my copies of Sergio Martino's Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (with Edwige Fenech), Emilio P. Miraglia's "Killer Dames" boxset with The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave and The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (with Barbara Bouchet).

I did want to save the Miraglia films for the marathon in October, but the set is so awesome looking I think I'll crack into all of these next week and post quick reviews if anyone is interested.

I'll probably include Mario Bava's Five Dolls for an August Moon and Giuliano Carnimeo's The Case of the Bloody Iris (both featuring Edwige Fenech) too since they're more thriller than horror and won't fit in the Oct marathon. You can never have too much Edwige Fenech.

Nerve was good, just not great. The romantic comedy portion was actually the better half of the film imo. There were a lot of genuine laugh out loud moments. Once the dark turn happens though, the movie starts to fall apart a bit. The plot gets convoluted, and there's a lot of "movie hacking" happening to make things happen out of practically thin air with little to no setup. The movie's climax is fantastically disappointing, although the final moments are able to effectively send a good message across.

I think the movie is worth watching for the first half alone, like I said earlier, there are a ton of great moments. The second half isn't awful, it just falls a little flat.

3/5

PS - Avoid the trailer if you can, it gives away almost all of the movie's important plot turns.

Regarding the Woods and the theories people are talking about...

I was just barely watching BWP scenes on YouTube last night to reminisce, what a coincidence I stumble across these theories.

Still remember watching BWP as a kid and being horrified over the fact that we had a thick forest behind our house.

Now I can't wait for the woods lol.

We'll find out Friday. Woods screening at SDCC and hopefully me and my friend are getting in.

Didn't realize Adam Wingard's new movie was coming out so soon. sick. I'm so weird with certain movies in the genre. I really didn't care much for You're Next but I watched it again a few months later and loved it. This happens to me a lot with movies in the genre.

Gonna just go into "The Woods" blindly. I don't know anything about it.

Just watched Here Comes the Devil on Canadian Netflix. Recommended. Simple but effective story, stylishly directed with a wonderful 70s vibe.

The original is the best horror movie of all time. I still enjoyed the remake for what that's worth. Ronald Lee Ermey makes for a brutal Sheriff! Absolutely loved his role in the remake.

I really enjoyed Texas Chainsaw - the newish TCM with Alexandra Daddario. Nothing groundbreaking like the original, or trippy and hilarious like TCM 2, but a competent modern horror film that I felt made good use of the property. I really need to rewatch TCM 2 and 3 again.

Competent?
It's suppose to be a direct sequel to the 70s original and take place around 20 years after (ie in the 90s at the latest), yet the characters are millenials and have smartphones...

And somehow, in spite of this, I still enjoyed it. Don't know what to tell you. Solid popcorn horror.

Have their been any decent found footage movies released in the past year? Got an urge to see some and looking for recommends. Last newish one I saw was about a film crew that travel to a small European village and agitate some locals with their project, can't recall the title though. Was decent.

Was it the shrine? I remember that one being pretty good, but can't remember if it was found footage. In terms of stuff that came out, The Sacrament was pretty good.

No not The Shrine but that was def good too. Feel like it had woods in the title lol.

Ah, found it. "They're Watching". Pretty low rent as far as found footage goes and the ending goes completely ham but it's a fun watch.

Hey Horror Gaf, I know this thread is usually for movies, but I have a horror short story I'm looking to get published and could use some beta readers for. If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll tell you more.

Incidentally, working on a long project really got me to appreciate the ebb and flow of horror anything. Mostly the lead up. I think horror is the genre that mosts needs a strong lead up since its climaxes are supposed to be the most impactful.

I really wish they would just do a general release, or at least give everyone some opportunity to see it early instead of just SDCC. I don't care about spoilers for most movies, but for a BWP sequel, i want to go in blind.

I also kinda wish they stuck with the title.

Agreed. The build up for this one was getting good. I get the marketing wants and needs and the cycle, but man, I kinda feel deflated by the whole thing now. There's no way this isn't going to go through a couple hype cycles and not careful use of spoilers when discussing it. I'll feel like I've seen it by the time I sit down In a theater to watch it.

So now It's called Blair Witch? Interesting. This this is one of those horror movies (It Follows, Cabin in the Woods, The Conjuring, The Witch, etc) I can not read anymore of the links or watch any trailers.

By those I mean horror movies hyped the fuck out of with how good they are. Love to go into them blindly.

So after all the TCM talk in this thread I finally decided to watch the TCM2 collector's edition I've had on Bluray since it released. Obviously not a scary horror film, but quite a bit of fun. Bill Mosely was amazing in the film, and it really did feel like a dark comedy, which seemed to be the intent. I also didn't realize how much House of 1,000 Corpses seemed to have ripped off from the movie. Like jeez Rob Zombie your "love letter" definitely borrowed a lot.

Also got around to watching Return of the Living Dead as well, and it was another funny horror film as well, even if the first 30 minutes did seem to drag for quite a long time. The ending was awesome though, so random and sudden.

I've got the Scream Factory release of Army of Darkness coming tonight, excited to see it in 1080p for once.

Nice, TCM2 is actually my favorite TCM and Return of the Living Dead is my favorite in that branch of movies too. Love both of those.

Just got out of an advanced screening of Don't Breathe and wowow, definitely the best horror film I've seen all year.

I honestly think it might become this year's It Follows.

The director's last film was the stellar Evil Dead remake, and this movie has a similar energy and tension to it. You're on the edge of your seat for pretty much the entire thing.

I don't have time to write a proper review, but basically see this movie when it comes out, it's a fucking blast.

Great to hear, I'm very excited to see it next month. Stephen Lang as the bad guy doesnt tend to disappoint

Damn that movie sucked lol.

Also. I can't decide whether horror crowds are the worst/best. All the yelling at the screen and jokes mid movie get a little old every five minutes.

And that's why I only go to the movies for big action spectacles. Horror movies are best enjoyed in the dark quiet of your home

I feel inclined to agree. It's such a hit and miss with horror films at the cinema.

People are always so fucking loud and obnoxious at these types of flicks.

The occasional times (both conjurings and the first paranormal activity experience) the room was awesome.

I'm hoping I don't gotta deal with the same shit when Blair Witch releases.

Which movie sucked, Lights Out? That looks terrible to me, so not planning on seeing it. The short is great but it's perfect at 3 minutes or whatever it is.

Dang really? If it's anywhere close to as good as Evil Dead 2013 it'll be great. Evil Dead was one violent ass good time.

I love that everyone here has a positive view on the Evil Dead remake, most of my friends hated that movie. Great to hear that Don't Breath is stellar, I almost forgot it was coming out next month.
