Rocket League cross-network play (PS4/Xbox) ready, only needs Sony approval

I love how quickly people can go from dinging MS for policies that only benefit MS to defending Sony for policies that only benefit Sony.

why would you say I am defending them? I am just stating what they would be thinking as a business. I am not saying sony shouldn't do this.

Unified playerbase will probably never exist. This is not PSN and XBL talking to each other. This is each one talking to a 3rd system that compiles everything. To have a unified list you would have to create the systems yourself and tie them together but I have now clue how the voice chat system or party system would work.
Voice chat system would work like it does already in public matches, just limited to your in game party, not as complicated as you think. Already sort of exists in games that only allow in game voice chat to the same team.

Party system would be as easy as it is now, only you invite people to your party from within the game itself.

The only hard part is publishers/developers getting their own UID setup, Blizzard already has it with Battle.net, EA with Origin and Ubisoft with Uplay, they just need to bring it into a game level on console and allow matchmaking through Uplay/Origin/Battle.Net aswell as through the system (XB1&PS4).

While I appreciate making all of this public makes it more likely to happen, I can't help but feel that all of this should have played out behind closed doors.

I mean, this whole scenario has developed in a way where Sony's arm is being very publicly twisted. There's nothing wrong with that if it gets the desired results I suppose, but I don't know... :\

From a business standpoint, if I were Sony I wouldn't dare. They're already destroying Xbox, why give anyone a reason not to buy a PS4.

People arent going to stop buying PS4s because they can maybe possibly match-make with their friend with another console one time.

All this does is shorten queue times for a game that is available on every system.

It doesn't give anyone a reason not to buy a PS4

On the contrary, one of the biggest excuses for people buying XB1's is "my friends are on Xbox". If you could hypothetically own a PS4 to enjoy all of it's benefits and still play with Xbox friends, that might boost PS4 sales.

This should start sooner.

I miss so many online games. Most of them closed due to low player population.

Psyonix really deserves this award for breaking the barrier, such an amazing studio.

And those saying why we need this... Are you guys out of your mind? Let people be free, use what they want, go where they want, play where they want against who they want.

If this is a competition, just make it fair for everyone and set them free.

Too bad. Sony's being doing it since forever. It was always MS that wouldn't allow cross play. Now everyone expects Sony to willingly agree just because MS want all its platforms connected.

From my personal stand point, f*ck yeah cross gaming is the only way to play. Now if it were my business, I'd be like f*ck that sh*t. PC and PS4 cross play only.

Because it wasn't that simple to know who it was when neither party publicly lists their requirements to cross-play and both where "open" to the idea of cross-play and that still stands. Saying it was in "X" court at the time was pure speculation and some being misguided by MS's PR.

That's just a silly thing to say. The ball is in Sony court for RL for anything else it is unknown. MS like Sony are both "open" to cross-play and will allow it where requirements are met. i.e For FFXIV and DC Universe Online the ball is in MS's court.

We are talking about RL mp....

I swear, is it that some cannot bear to tolerate any sort of criticism for Sony...

Agreed, I can see it happening. Just imagine the longevity this will bring to great games that sometimes get lost cause of the other released. The online communities will strive better for this reason.

This will be great for the industry, devs, and gamers as whole.

Yeah, specially after we go full on towards iterative consoles.

Imagine picking this game 10 years from now and still find an active community?

Opens the floodgates for other multiplayer games with longer life spans (ie Overwatch, possibly Tekken 7, etc) to do cross play as well.

Also, particularly in the FPS arena, other game modes won't fall to the wayside over the bog standard TDM/Domination gametypes because they'll have a much larget pool of people to play with, keeping matchmaking times down.

Um, you cannot create a friends list with them, party up, and talk to them like you can on each's network. So that argument is invalid to this type of cross play.

Who's to say you couldn't hypothetically search for friends on other platforms in game? Friends lists and parties wouldn't be required.

Either way, Sony doesn't lose anything here. People aren't going to stop buying PS4's by the shit load. The only reasoning I'm seeing in here is the same bullshit I saw last gen when Microsoft were being poor winners.

How will gamertags work?

(PS)KillGore and (XB)KillGore? There has to be a way to differentiate between both users.

Just like it does already, you'll see avatars for people playing on the same system as you, and "PsyNet" for everyone from other systems.

I actually misread what you were saying, however, there is no way to search, it will be like the PC/PS4 connect is now.

You reckon they could implement something like that in the future? Can't you play private matches with PC players in RL at the minute?

They should just tweet Shu and ask.

When Microsoft made the decision to no longer forbid cross platform multiplayer, they had time to get their policies and procedures in place before announcing it, now Sony is doing the same.

Microsoft announced their change of policy a day before the 2016 Game Developers Conference. Shuhei Yoshida was no doubt surprised when reporters started asking him if Sony is prepared to enable cross-platform multiplayer. And he was the wrong person for reporters to approach in any case. Yoshida oversees Worldwide Studios. None of Sony's first-party titles will ever release on Xbox One, so I doubt he had ever considered this question too deeply before. He nonetheless attempted to provide a balanced answer, speculating that there would be some policies and technical hurdles that would need to be considered. A lot of people dismissed his response as arm-waving and deflection, but I thought it was a reasonable answer under the circumstance.

I doubt that Rocket League is the deciding factor for anybody's system purchase. I wish people would quit stating that it would influence someone to not buy a ps4 or Xbox if they were leaning towards the opposite. Not every multi platform game will be able to do this. Just rocket league.

On topic I think that Sony should ok this. We will then see the real console wars.

That would be something each developer would have to do on their own hosted level. In theory it should be possible, but also depending on what MSFT/Sony policies are on that level.

I believe it is only matchmaking. But I am not 100% on that.

But NOW, in 2016, the ball is in Sony's court.

We can all agree with 2:1 winning ratio, MS didn't want it-but now they do, etc....
Yes and? The post you replied to was about general cross-play and as your reply above it doesn't imply it was strictly about RL MP...

Would definitely be interesting.

Anyway I think the only way Sony "loses" here is if they say no. They stand to get some good PR and quicker wait times in online games if they give the OK. Learn from MS and their petty policies last gen I say.

Sony has no reason to do it so I don't see this happening.
I'm not against it, I'm just trying to predict the outcome.
I'll be surprised if Sony gives in and allows it but it could happen anyway.

Sony has the biggest console player base, and they use that to attract most customers towards the PS4. That is one of the current strengths of the PS4.
For example:
If your friend has a PS4, you are more inclined to buy a PS4 to play online with him, if there were no barriers, that upper-hand Sony has would banish and it wouldn't matter if you get an Xbox or PS4.

Of course this would help Microsoft a lot while hurt Sony's sales in some way.
I don't see any benefits that will help Sony in any way so I don't think it will happen.

And if you think it's only 1 game, think twice. This would open the floodgates to many more companies asking for the same treatment, and helped of course by a public campaign led by Microsoft for obvious reasons.

Soon, the real platform wars will begin.

Need Overwatch next so M&K can reign supreme!

I really hope shooter devs will consider crossplay once mouse support is on Xbone
I see no problem with connecting to other players with the same control scheme

Sony is worried about the competitive disadvantage console players will have against PC gamers with keyboard and mouse.
