All the factions and stuff popping up already online is impressive.

I like how they are working around the fact that they wont meet each other in game. Just to share discoveries and name stuff after their faction. I'm down for the GAF one for sure.

But who will be the Chief Commander?

Oh no.

I think this is a sign for me to drop off any NMS thread now, and I'll only watch the last remaining trailer for Survival when it comes. And if they do a specific launch trailer with Sir Patrick Stewart but that's it. Not long now.

I dont think any of the ones I have seen claim to have the game yet or anything. Just organizing for when it comes out. Some of them are 100s strong already.

Oh right, that's fine. Just small indie store in the UK already has NMS copies in stock so I imagine some shops will sneak out a copy and play it early for example.

So how do you actually name planets anyway? Do you just have to be the first one there or do you need to do a certain amount of stuff on the planet itself?

I think I saw in a video after you discover something you open up the pause menu and there is a tab that you can name the things you discovered. Then if you upload it a beacon it will be saved on the server. At least thats how it worked for naming the animals. Im assuming its the same for the planets.

You just have to discover it.

When you enter an undiscovered system, you become the discoverer of that system. When you approach planets in that system, you become the discoverer of those planets. When you scan creatures, you become the discoverer of those creatures.

In one of the videos, I think the Anthony Carboni one, there is a menu in your options screen that lets you see all of your discoveries and name them. I think you press Square to open up the window to enter their new name. You don't have to do anything extra, just be the first to discover the system, planet, species.

You do have to upload the discoveries at a station so they can he saved to Hello Game's server in order for everyone else to see what you've discovered. The data will be saved locally to our PC/PS4 as well.

My history with No Man's Sky:

Initial reveal: "Looks interesting and "wow"."
Flood of footage without real gameplay: "Wtf do you actually do in the game?!?!?!"
Last 1+ years: "Not interested anymore. Stopped following any news"
Now (fighter trailer + trader): "Holy shit this looks great. Interested²"

With the past trailer and this one, along with a bit of info I read in the thread about progression and goals, I've gone from "go away with this shit" to "looking forward to it".

I'd be up for a NeoGAF guild, but only after going solo for a bit. I want to explore the game so much before I frequent the OT, though I will make regular stops by the Photo Mode thread :)

Lol pretty good. I like Galactic Allied Federation.. instead of faction. It has a Starship Troopers vibe.


When the OT goes up we will all have to friend up on our respective platforms. Wanna make sure my galactic map is littered with other gaffers.

All it would really do it make a lot more planets have the faction name in it (ie Tattooine Zeta (GAF). Its pretty much a meta game at this point.

I have good suspicion that named discoveries will be tied to the central database which will also have a sort of leaderboard thing for the individuals with the most discoveries.

The thing is what would be the point of being able to name these creatures or name planets and other objects we discover if no one else gets to see who earned credit for those discoveries.

Clearly other players are expected to come across these discoveries otherwise being able to claim them and give them a name would be pointless, no?

First person who finds a planet with giant bug aliens must name it Klendathu.

On the subject of planet names. Anyone have list of notable fictional planet names in films or books.

Might use some of the ideas for naming concepts.

Do you have a favourite science fiction novel/entertainment that you're naming a planet off of? For me, I'm going to name some planets based on WipEout XL levels, and definitely going to be naming ships based on WipEout team names. Can't wait to name it when I see it - a purple, baby blue & white fighter be Quirex Omega Runner. Goteki 4500. Stuff like that.
