Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

Ok, so on the one hand Nintendo positioned their already underpowered console in a market where the average device gets around 25% faster every year to go head to head with smart phones, on the other hand this thing has absolutely no chance against even the Xbone/PS4 let alone Scorpio/Neo. So in all honesty, WHAT IN THE FUCK NINTENDO?

I don't understand the complainers about graphics.

First, Tegra is adequate. We're not going to get blown up 3DS resolutions on this "handheld".

Secondly, I think we are in a time where graphics mean less and less compared to gameplay. Sure hardcore gamers will nitpick, but I don't understand why Nintendo should overprice their system and drive up development costs to appease some hardcore tech gamers.

And last, third parties haven't been giving Nintendo many ports for what feels like... forever? If you want to play the most jaw-dropping $100+ million AAA 3rd party game, go buy a Neo or Scorpio. If devs are excited about NX, a large part of that is likely because they won't be in an arms race for graphics, which can allow for a lot more risks and unique experiences.

To converge their console/handheld business is brilliant. The absolute worse thing they could do at this point is get into an arms race with MS and Sony, release another expensive system, and drown some more.

Would something like additional RAM be feasible in the dock or not really worth it? At this point an additional chipset would be rather pricey, and not really worth it, but they could always release an expansion for that in a couple years times. But can we really expect the handheld to hold ~8 gigs of RAM?

RAM...RAM, how could I forget about RAM? That docking station must have a discreet GPU in it...

Sounds interesting. I'm down for it of course, if nothing else in gaming for me, always Nintendo!

I'll be happy if it is that 'hybrid' thing we've been saying all this time. I thought that was a good idea.

I'm just well over all the speculating, I just want to know, reveal the thing dammit! Come on, tellll me!

Some of the reactions are weird, but expected.

The assumption that Tegra = less powerful than Wii U = PS2 visuals, because of... mobile games.

That cartridges are gimmicky and useless, despite cartridges been capable of holding more than Bluray (recommended is 32GB which is a single layered BR, probably for costs) ...and how a cartridge is a gimmick anyway? Is a storage media. Would be like saying USBs and HDDs are a gimmick.

I skipped the WiiU and was hoping the NX had backward compatibility so I could play Bayonetta 2. I guess that's not happening now.

Still tho this could be really cool or dead on arrival.

I don't know why but the no backwards compability thing is really irking me. MS and Sony have made the hugely pro-consumer choice to support all old games moving forward, while Nintendo is still stuck in the past, and will force you to re-buy all old games. Doesn't sit well with me.

This is done to do exactly that. Their backwards compatibility until today was hardware-based IIRC.

oh man. nice pull

I'm trying to visualize - controllers with cords? would be problematic for inevitable repairs. two separate wireless thingies that can attach? what if you lose one? is there a new controller spec for NX that 3rd parties can make for it?

this only raises new questions

I can imagine a kickstand, a la Surface, for portable local multiplayer.

I'm excited for this. Don't know or care if western third parties will be on board - DS/3DS-style Japanese third party support + Wii/Wii U-style first party output + no dividing of Nintendo between handheld and console sounds awesome to me.

This generation has been one of Nintendo's best in terms of first party games (quality, not sales). They have my ear.

Okay here is my prediction based on this rumour

Name
Nintendo Go

Media
Cartridges

Power
×1.5x better than Wii U in docked mode

System Features

Handheld Mode
System is basically a small 7" tablet with a 540p capacitive touchscreen. Can be used as a iPad. Can add attachments on each side of the unit for traditional controls. System also has camera and gyro for AR features

Console Mode
There is a docking station that has a HDMI passthrough and charges. Once the system is on this docking station system overclocks for higher resolution graphics it allows this to happen as system does not have to worry about battery life in this mode. The 2 control attachments can be attached together to form a regular controller. The docking station also has wireless video streaming for instances you want to use the 2 screen features for some games like the Wii U.

Price
$250 (NVIDIA Shield is currently $200)

Sounds pretty on point from the patents we know they have, and rumor dissecting over the past year.

Nintendo also said no worries about game drought. Between their own output, and to make the device look better, I wonder if it'll have access to android store games and apps. I'll admit to generally disliking android and its ecosystem so I'm not sure how I'd feel of Nintendo's next console also played/ran android games and apps. Maybe if they pulled select games over into their own store...

Game drought should be significantly improved by simply not having their internal studios supporting two different pieces of hardware.

I feel like the lack of backwards compatibility is the true shame here. While It hasn't been a staple of Nintendo since the Wii, I always assumed the feature was here to stay.

But I suppose this gives them incentive to try to reheat and resell Wii U games that didn't meet their potential.

As a successor to the 3DS, I don't see the problem. Plus it is getting the new Zelda ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Had this just been Wii U 2.0 I would have had zero interest in it.

There will be no droughts , but definitely dont buy it if you dont like Nintendo games because thats going to be the bulk of the software

Well, how often do you expect Nintendo to bring out a title considering their development times on games if that is the bulk of the library? They don't have hundreds of studios! Every system needs third party support.

The one positive is you have a one stop shop for all new Nintendo games, with the flexibility of playing as a portable game in bed or no hassle connection for living room enjoyment. The portable should be pretty powerful, let's hope Nintendo finally give us a nice modern high res LCD and make it capacitive FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST!

After that though as a home console it will be underwhelming. I really thought they'd at least try and match current gen, not make a system that's not even up to that standard... Third parties will be MIA yet again and that just won't help them at all.

Someone else said Nintendo GO would be a great name for it, given Pokemon Go's huge success and awareness they'd be crazy NOT to call it that. The explanatory adverts write themselves.

This sounds like a bumbling disaster already. But I said the same thing about Wii (but didn't about Wii U), so I'm likely wrong and this thing will be the next sliced bread.

But label me as on the doom-and-gloom side of the fence.

In case any of you doubt the veracity of our own ShockingAlberto as a source, here is a PM I received from him yesterday evening.

I am like

99% sure on this one. Eurogamer's story is in two parts and they should cover it, too. I am not going to say anything about it because I honestly don't want to deal with the fallout if I am wrong somehow. You can be my sealed envelope on this.

- Hybrid; it's a handheld with a TV docking station.
- Carts, around 16-32 GB.
- Nintendo-made OS, not Android.
- Retailers are being shown soon, so expect pre-orders to be around when they reveal, if not that day.
- Around Xbox One in power.
- Base station will come with it
- Nvidia is doing the internals

He has given me permission to now post this. He also wanted me to mention nothing is confirmed until Nintendo confirms it.

How many times did I say that Nintendo will NEVER make a big console again?

This is a handheld, nothing more, nothing less...

Sounds like a potentially awesome device, but I wanted more power from Nintendos next home console.

Edit: Wait, this would be were the external computing device comes in!

I'm a bit worried about storage space though.

How about Portable Nintendo Entertainment System?

No BC means I will be waiting a good while before picking one up.

Moot for me as I'm nearly done with my Wii U backlog. Just need to play my fill of Hyrule Warriors (regret buying the DLC) and get to Pikmin 3. Done with Splatoon after the last splatfest, and Smash, MK8 and Mario Maker just didn't hook me long term.

As long as I decide for sure that I want the NX after the reveal, Wii U will get traded/sold to go toward NX and Zelda. Other decisions are whether to keep PS4 as I'm mostly gaming on PC now and only really excited about Horizon Zero Dawn and naughty dog games (especially TLOU2) as well as my fight stick and racing wheel that I'm not using much.

Leaning toward keeping all that, and at least the wheel/stick since they work with PC too, but I'm kind of drowning in games on PC so PC and Nintendo going forward would be more than enough. Decisions, decisions.

Right. But the console apparently has a 540p screen for a start (so thats a lot less of a power hog than 720p). Plus when plugged into the 'base' unit it no longer needs to be limited by battery power - ie the TDP can be alot higher than when in 'handheld' mode.

Basically the above figures are likely not comparible to NX.

Why would it only play 'upressed' mobile games? It will be plugged into the mains when hooked up to a tv, meaning far more TDP to play with than when mobile.

Smartphones have killed the need to carry more than 1 mobile device. Pokemon Go has proven that.

Ok, guys I'm taking bets now...

Avatar bet that NX will be named AmiiGO

Oddly enough I think 'WiiGO' would actually be a nice name, and fitting to the 'Wii Play' thought process, but after the confusion the WiiU caused and their total failure to differentiate it such a name would never happen.

Hopefully it supports some kind of quick charge. How bad was the battery on the SHEILD portable? Didn't dolphin run pretty well on it? Nintendo gets to sell us handheld GCN games now. The virtual console expands again.

Honestly, if it's as a weak as the speculation here states then I'm sort of excited I have one less console to buy over the next year.
With statements like this, I wonder if you're even a fan of Nintendo's games.

I don't know. It just seems like, if you like their games you're past the whole graphics thing. They always do wonderful work with what they have anyway.

NX will be weaker than you want (likely) but if Nintendo plays their cards right it could have 3DS+ levels of support which is great. People want games to play and NX should have the games considering that it's a streamlined platform.

16-32gb carts make sense. Nintendo hasn't really released a Wii U game that was over 25gbs right
