PSVR requires 2x3 metres of space to use. Polygon requires 2x3 beers to comprehend.

I just got out my tape measure and approx the amount of space (if I clear the clutter up) I have in front of my TV is 3x2 metres so I am set lol Watch out for the stack of dvd's at the back and the table may have to be moved if its a standing up game so I don't hit my shins but all in all that is fine for me.

If you're sitting down though you'll need vastly less space. Its not a huge space but its not tiny either - I imagine they are saying this so you don't sue them when you walk into your wall.

Honestly? It was a lot of people looking for an axe to grind. For a start it was Internet Explorer, not Xbox that partnered with Vox Media (ad division is not editorial which is really really hard for some people to get their heads around) - and it was only for this video series at the time. Microsoft IE then went on to sponsor the Human Angle series, something which had nothing to do with Sony or Xbox. High end documentaries like this cost a lot of money to produce for what is essentially free to the end user.

The documentary itself if you watch it was less to do with Polygon and how Vox Media the company were giving them editorial freedom, free from the problems that lead to events like the Gamespot debacle— which actually was a real thing that happened but nobody brings up anymore. Why's that, I wonder?

Yes there are some moments where it was taken a little too seriously but if you think that a billion dollar company like Vox Media takes payola to rate Sony exclusives lower than Microsoft ones then I just gotta ask you; do you know how ridiculous that sounds?

Where did I say any of this? lol

Bias can and does still exist with individuals there, regardless of who a parent company is.

This is where VR fails... space needed for best experience.

I have 2x3 meters but I need to move a few things to play... so it'll never happen. Like for Kinect :/

It will be fine, lol. The space at the Best Buy demos were way smaller, with your back against shelving to boot.

You can be 2 feet from the camera and still be fine.

The image from Sony clearly states that the image talks about the area covered by the camera. And that they suggest to play sitting, and in the "play area" because it's where the device is going to be properly tracked.

https://asia.playstation.com/id/en/psvr/guide/guide

They didn't mention that is required to clear all this area or to have all this area available, even if obviously it's suggested to don't have lamps or similar near you when using VR.

As long as you play inside the play area doesn't matter if you have a smaller place to play, it isn't like Kinect. Same goes for sitting. It isn't mandatory but you should stay the play area.

Just spent 20 minutes trying to get my 4 sisters and 5 buddies to cancel their pre-orders after reading the OP, and now I find out after reading further that Polygon misinterpreted the text? now I have to call everyone back and make an ass out of myself and basically tell them to forget what I said earlier.

This is why people need to update their OP when needed.

Good lord you cant be serious.

I got outed by my anti VR bias, I hope my post was not already put up on a wall of shame somewhere in this thread

Uhhhh ok. Wasn't expecting to need THAT much. I guess this is only for 'room scale' type games, like job simulator? And not so much rez infinite.

I'm assuming it's for 'room scale' type games and since this doesn't have the tech to support mapping out your actual room's dimensions they have to err on the side of caution.

they dont have room scale detection unlike Vive and Rift.

I keep seeing threads on reddit popping up about this "requirement" too. How did so many people on the internet read that documentation so wrong?

I think it's not the area you need. it's the area the camera is able to track. you have to be inside this area for proper tracking.

Edit: Jep, just read the documentation. it's the space you should stay in, not the space you need.

one of those things where i hope its just concern trolling and not reading comprehension. its probably a bit of both though...maybe they see these these type of posts and something just happens to their brain's ability to process it :p

I've rented out warehouse space because of the requirements. Are you saying the Polygon article is wrong?

I'm guessing most of this is about safety (rather than actual functionality), but if that's not the case... eek. Could be looking at a Kinect situation where the demo experience just never translates to what players can get at home.

No one is reading the thread I guess. The space... It's not needed

For anyone worried I've used the PSVR standing in practically a box, and sitting just feet away from a TV. The space requirements shouldn't be any kind of concern for most.

Here are a couple pictures of my most recent time with it at E3:

I took this one of someone else playing. It perfectly outlines just how much space you need for PSVR.

That last image is actually overkill. The only time you need to sit that far (less even) is if you are playing something while standing and using the Move controller.

What made this stupid is anyone who as used a PS camera knows it needs very little space, even sitting. That combined with how little space you ever needed for a a move, why on earth would a VR headset need so much space. The bloody thing is covered in lights!

I'm amazed that the thread made it that far when tons of people have already used PSVR at conventions and they have those tiny set-ups at Best Buy and such.

Can someone clarify the Polygon hate for me on this?

Aren't they just repeating what Sony has stated?

No.

Polygon said PSVR requires 60 sq ft for use.

Sony actually said, you can use PSVR anywhere within a defined 60 sq ft area. (Which has already been known for ages)

Sony went on to say you should have clear space around said area to avoid injury / damage to property, as any legally-aware organisation would. In reality this should be common sense and is only applicable to games that involve movement anyway.

The real story should have been "When playing PSVR, sit anywhere vaguely in front of the camera, but don't punch the cat or trip over your bowl of Doritos". That probably wouldn't have generated as many clicks though.

im currently trying to use PSVR in my (cleared out) 10 x 6 m room and i can't get the motion traking to work
bDmVtnA.jpg

obviously im doing something wrong here in my ps4 settings or wathever it is, but I've definitely cleared out (more than) 60-square-feet of space.

You're sitting at the wrong side of the room. Try sitting on the opposite side. The side you're facing..

Sheesh , some people ....

The headset needs to be a certain distance from the camera and a direct line of sight established. But it can work with less. If you are sitting down there is no reason to actually clear that space so it should work in 99% of rooms.
