Because they manufacture a whole bunch of Slim models that don't sell. Neo is out, plus a big inflow of used PS4s to the market. Now, if Slim includes 4K Blu-Ray, that'll make sense.

This makes no sense, you think people won't be buying brand new $250 PS4's just because the NEO is available? I don't think 4K Blu Ray support is enough of a draw to drive sales for either new console.

Also more PS4's in homes is a good thing for Sony, so a bunch of second hand PS4's isn't going to make a difference. Also I don't think there's going to be any kind of flood here, a relatively small about will be upgrading IMO.

Why would Slim not sell? The OG PS4 phat have all but sold out and they are not making any more. Are you claiming that Sony would not be able to sell any more new PS4s for the next two years, even though the Slim is cheaper?

Yes, there are going to be 2nd hand OG PS4s around. But that is the same as back with the PS3 Slim, or the PS2 Slim, or the PS1 Slim. The Slim sold fine for every generation before PS4, why would it be any different this time?

For some reason, the Slim makes me feel like the Neo will be a ways off yet, perhaps next Spring. This is based on nothing of any substance...
Honestly that will sway me towards Scorpio. Neo's biggest selling point is that it's out this year. With only a six month gap I'd just wait for Scorpio given the spec difference.

What the fuck is this shit? So now questioning the validity of something (especially when it concerns Sony), puts you on teamfake? Did I stumble into N4G by accident???

Settle down cowboy, it's clearly just a bit of banter. Most people met the pictures with scepticism.

Yeah, I kind of get that feeling too now that you mention it.

Really hope that's not the case, but I feel like it may be.

I still think the Neo is coming this year, they have said they will be giving people a choice and and the slim is just a replacement for the OG PS4. If the price comes down as much as we think then that will leave a nice gap between the 2 models.

Starting production in August of a console that hasn't even been announced and won't be coming out until next year? Not sure.

It seems they will be announcing it in the next few weeks, if it's coming out in March then the leak isn't that unrealistic.

Personally I hope its the slim release this year and Neo release in early 2017.
Likely won't happen though, xmas sales are too crucial to miss for a console relaunch like this.

Could be vita revision, it's been a while since the last one.

Unless it's using off the shelf parts and Sony plans on selling them for profit, I wouldn't count on it being vita. They aren't going to reengineer the vita to use modern fabs... Makes no sense. A new hand held doesn't make a lot of sense either, but then again neither did the vita...

vita made sense. in 2010 or so, when it was getting going, the psp had sold tens of millions and the smartphone takeover hadn't really happened yet. the problem they had was they didn't really have a strategy for the machine. even the 'console on the go' push was half-assed compared to the psp in 2004 and 2005.

a sony handheld in 2017 would need to be a portable ps4 with download-only games and a rather high retail price.

I have had my ps4 since January, as much as I am a bit happier with the games that are soon to start coming out and of course use of PSVR there is NO WAY I am upgrading my practically new ps4 without a helping hand from Sony!

I know many others that are in this same camp and would hope that Sony offer some initiative to purchase a neo/psvr bundle.

I know a lot of people who only have had the console for a short space of time and if nothing is offered they will never buy a PlayStation again.

Don't buy one. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Will buy the Slim before Christmas - not bothered about 4k so don't want to pay the extra for a Neo.

Looking forward to this! (XB1 owner)

If Nintendo can make a handheld that is presumably capable of handling PS4 games (albeit paired back), which I believe it would have to in order for even the dream of third party support to exist, then there's no reason Sony can't.

That said, I really doubt they will do that. The Vita failed far too hard. I think they will put the handheld market aside for a while until it crumbles in favour of phones entirely or there is new interest.

I'd be interested in buying one though, but it would need full controller functionality and buttons. I also hope the NX has that.

Proud of #TeamFake. We fought a good fight.

Yeah have to admit I was in that camp yesterday.

I mean just turning up at a shopkeepers in Manchester and then selling for only £300 seemed way too cheap and obviously no picture of powered on, the ps4 on the box looks way smaller than it actually is - the scale seems wrong next to the DS4....................But after a restless sleep I've come to the conclusion that I was on the wrong team.

It just seemed all to bizarre to be real - now if a Neo turned up somewhere in the wild - This place will explode.

So they'll have 3 SKUs like Microsoft? OR maybe phase out the regular ps4.

Reports are that the regular PS4 is no longer being produced. But the regular PS4 should remain available 2nd hand and remain as the cheapest possible option for those with a tight budget.

Slim is like the ugly younger brother of the PS4. Maybe it will look better in different colours? Classic PS2 gray? Hmmmm

Slim and NEO are different target markets. VR.. it'll need NEO to show it in its full glory.

Which is exactly why I think Neo is definitely coming this year. I think the cheap look of the PS4 slim is also a great tactic to get people buying Neo because let's face it, that's what they really want people buying.

Never forget developing markets. It is something of utter importance to Sony.

The 50$ can make a huge difference in 3rd world countries. And all those potential buyers are tied to ecosystem once in.

In my country (Croatia) the PS4 has great sales, but pricing it at 270 euro (for example) would quadriple the holliday sales. And all those people will reconsider Neo in 2017/2018.

Expecting:
PS4 slim = 299 dollars
PS4 neo = 399 dollars

A 100$ gap is to small.
Who will buy a weaker console, if he gets a stronger console for only 100$ more?

I expect PS4 Slim between 250$ and 299$ and PS4 Neo between 450$ and 499$. If it is cheaper I am fine with it.

Hmm, makes me wonder if the slim version will also support 4k content. It'd be nice. For those that don't need the extra horsepower, but want UHD(HDR?) support, there's the PS4S. For those that want a bit more power, there's the Neo.

The slim will certainly be selling still in 2 years. Seems silly not to include it.

Of course, but in 2 years the Neo will also be cheaper and there might be another original slim revision then. Who knows.
I'm sure Sony considered this. It also makes the Neo seem even more premium.

So time to sell my ps4 then? Crap, probably should have done this when the conference was first announced.

Can I factory reset if I'm in that preview program?

Oh but wait....I still have P.T. on here

I still see stores like Best Buy , wal mart and target with the uncharted , black ops 3 and destiny bundle still in store , do you think those will get a huge price drop or clearance price before the slim comes out?

I'd honestly scoop one up to keep if it were $200 or below

Really interested to see the reaction for the slim X see neo
