Pokemon Go Loses More Than 15 Million Daily Users in a Month

There's not really enough "game" to keep people coming back. Catching pokemon in the wild is a fun novelty, but without any mechanics beyond that it's just not worth going back to. I think it's a great foundation for Nintendo and the Pokemon Company going forward to learn from because their combined IP power can really take mobile games to the next level.

It's not "calling the game out" so much as it is making an incredibly obvious prediction. "I bet that game will have less daily users in a few months" is almost a sure bet, and it's dumb to see people patting themselves on the back over it.

When Uncharted 4 disappeared from the NPD, nobody was like --"I told you so, people just don't like its shallow gameplay!"

Maybe I'm behind the times (being the old fart that I am) but wasn't this game released on July 6 2016? Its been like 49 days...49 days is not a few months.... in 49 days the game gained and lost so much....Is it wrong to form an opinion on that fact that if no corrective action is done the bleeding will not stop?

if its just a normal day then why did the source in OP even choose to report on it? Why did the mods not close this thread since, by your logic this is non-news?

I guess we're both saying the same, I'm just trying to add that for many the game in its current state is enough to play it daily. That doesn't change that the game desperately needs updates and more gameplay, just that there are more angles to this.

Yes, I believe we are saying the same thing. Although our opinions differ on what the game needs to keep up the awesome momentum it built for itself

I mostly stopped playing because it got really hot for a few weeks. I live in suburbs where everyone drives, so I didn't want to go out of my way to get hot to catch pokemon.

Wonder how it will be in winter.

I still see people loading it up now and then, but there is literally nothing to do with my Pokemon. I am only level 15 or so, so can't even get Pokemon strong enough to compete in gyms which all have huge cp snorlaxes. Upgrading mine is a waste because I need to be higher leveled to find higher costs base Pokemon

Hate to say it but it definitely was the definition of a fad. The collection is still kinda good so I'm sure it will always have some users, but no way a game like this can stay on top. No real updates besides bug fixes either

Did everyone expect it would stay that high? Of course people will loose interest at one point. Some sooner, some later.

Yeah. Getting to the point of having good enough Pokemon to take on a gym is mostly an unsatisfying grind fest.

Have you tried fighting in gyms? CP 500-1000 pokemon are more than fine in order to take down pretty much any gym. You only have to beat 1 pokemon (using up to 6 of your own) in order to chip away at the gym's prestige. If you can get at least 1 other person to help you it becomes even easier since you'll basically have 12 pokemon against 1.

So much faith in mobile gaming but can't even keep a steady install base smh... this this is very typical on mobile platforms.

sad, and this is the direction gaming companies want to go?

It's boring after a while and, compared to people who played it like mad, it felt like an uphill battle to do anything.

Yup. Once I hit level 20 my progress in the game pretty much stalled. I kept at it for a while, but the XP needed to progress was too high. Eventually I just got tired of nothing new happening and I deleted the app.

Pokemon: A walk unspoiled.

Makes sense. Its an extremely shallow game if you take away the social aspects. The battle aspects severely punish people who a)don't live in an urban center, b)have a job. It felt like once you got out of it for a few days there was no way to compete again. It quickly became a diminishing return in enjoyment. Still, for those first two weeks, it was a great social experience.

Are people ignoring the number of players still playing? That's still a good number and its still number 1 game and number 5 in top apps. People act like its doomed.

Like any popular meme/pop culture trend it burns out pretty quickly. You don't really see people on hover boards anymore either. Still funny that some people thought Nintendo could carry Pokemon Go's success into NX.

I bet people will start coming back once new pokemon are introduced. I think it's a no-brainer to have pokemon show up depending on the season

It became boring because

A) The pokemon in my area was always shit
B) I couldn't battle them against my friends
C) It was constantly crashing or the servers were down

All they had to do was bring Red and Blue to mobile and and some social media plugins and they would have been golden.

Definitely not doomed. And the Pokemon brand is very very strong again (way stronger than something like Halo). But its no longer the transcending fad it was last month. Now its up to Nintendo to capitalize on the brand awareness/freshness.

I have zero attachment to the Pokemon I collect because there's nothing to do with them other than throw them into that awful, awful battle system at a gym. Just let me power them up with a pedometer or something, and I'm instantly invested again. But as-is, they don't really have a grasp on why Pokemon is fun.

A certain percentage, yes. But not the level of cross culture awareness, that will never happen with this particular product again. These things only happen every 5-10 years. It was a flat out craze that crossed into every demographic.

Still super popular but, I personally think each region of the world is gonna have there crazy moments with it, and it won't be collectively done for a while now.

A few thoughts..

1. They got it later and are at the apex of their bell curve.(Central park stampede happened at this relative point)
2. Asians seem to hold onto fads longer than Western societies. (Counterstike, MMOs, etc).
3. I could be wrong.

All I'm saying is, among gamers and youth demographics, this is just the beginning. Among non-direct demographics (like 50 year old office women who were playing Candy Crush and Angry Birds) its done.

I don't disagree with any of that. I was actually surprised that pokemon go stayed as relevant as it did in the mainstream media (both traditional and social media) given how short the attention spans for those types of things are.

I definitely stopped playing because of the heat. Now that the weather is nicer I plan on playing again. Haven't seen what the changes are though. :/

If someone predicted that "This game will lose 1/3 of it's users within 8 weeks" then maybe that's a prediction worth crowing about, if only due to its incredible specificity. But that wasn't most predictions -- "This game will not always be this popular" is an incredibly easy projection, given that virtually no games retain daily users and playership was bound to wane as a result of changing seasons/school year.

I didn't say that this was "non-news", just that it is a part of every game's life cycle. Will the loss of users continue if nothing is done? Sure, but just due to the nature of how people play games it may be that nothing can really stem that tide. People are especially fickle in the mobile market. Drop off may have nothing to do with a poor battle system, broken tracker, or inability to trade. It may just be the natural cooling off of interest that happens when there's a huge and sudden critical mass of casual users.

I have two siblings in high school -- one in Arizona, the other in South Carolina -- and the school year has started for both of them already. As far as universities go, my alma mater started classes for the Fall semester two weeks ago.

Game was insanely addictive when it first came out, had me ripping around on my bike until it went dark and even did a 27 mile run catching them 1-handed on the move. Then the combo of game getting shit (tracking) and there being little to do once you've bagged a load of pokemons and... meh.

My son walked 2 miles on Sunday, encountered a single pokemon, the game froze as it went into the ball as it used to do and that was that. Maybe if they actually put some game elements in there one day I'll give it another go, but no point "playing" it as it stands now.

My son's school started two weeks ago, and the kids of every other parent in my office started either this week or last week. Also, the California state colleges started this week as well.

Having to either pay money or go squat at stops just to get pokeballs + the long wait for hatching shitty rattatas made this feel like a chore to me.

I still have it installed but I'll probably wait until there's a new big update that hopefully addresses some of these things or makes it interesting again.

getting new poke balls by having to go to arbitrary locations killed it for me

can't I just walk around my block and get rewarded for exercising ?

Alot of schools actually, all the Elementary, Middle, High School, and Community Colleges in my area are already back in session. I live in SoCal and the only schools not started yet are UC's and Cal States.

I stopped just because it's useless to take on a gym when people who have more time than you to play make it impossible.

Also because I really only go two places six out of 7 days a week and those are work and home and nothing new appears in either place.
