Even if its genuine, and I believe it is from what ive seen of Sean, my response to it and many of the hyperbole from some fans is:

"Calm down its just a videogame"

A very good one hopefully, but yeah, the "oh my god this experience will change your life" vibe rubs me the wrong way

This is a really sad thing to say.

I've seen people getting life changed by something they heard, by meeting someone they got inspired from, seeing a movie, reading a book, listening to a record and so on and so forth.
This is just a videogame exactly how everything else we experience is just that.
What matters is what meaning we give to that thing and whether it inspires us: be it a philosophy book or the latest Marvel movie, literally anything can inspire and change us.

People really expected too much from this game, but saying "it's just a videogame" is really sad and doesn't really pay justice to a medium that over the course of years has changed lives.

Not to mention getting hyped about something and then getting disappointed could be the motivation for someone to bring us something even better in the future. :)

Was really on the fence on this game, as I need to save for vacation, but found a deal on Ebay through NewEgg to get the game for 47.99 and free shipping. Don't mind waiting awhile to get it either. Great letter and can't wait to play.

If anyone else is on the fence and thinks $12 off is enough

Really hope this game sells enough for them to get some profit.

Only 1 day to go and I cannot wait to explore the universe.

That's exactly what it is, damage control. Guy knows the game is over hyped and is pre-emptively trying to lower expectations to mitigate bad reviews and backlash.

But don't take my word for it. Keep an eye on user reviews for the next month or so.

Man I sure hope Sean won't be reading this thread, some of these posts man smh

That's really cool. I love when developers include stuff like this. It's nice in this case as we've seen the game shown so many times and seen Sean always be this way about it.

Can't wait to play!

I really want to like this game but after having played Elite with HOTAS it's tempered my excitement for it. I'll wait for reviews and impressions a few weeks after release to see what the consensus is. But Sean Murray seems like a genuinely cool guy and I wish him nothing but success.

I may hate the price of the game. I may hate the hype this game has garnered. But I can't hate this guy nor Hello Games. They have been nothing but humble and classy in this long journey. Much luck to them.

Its interesting....If I had never heard anything about this game before reading this amazing message....I would try just because of what he's written.

He poured his heart and soul into this. Probably shaved 5 years off of his life through stress and lack of sleep. All for this game.

Ya gotta respect that.

I saw this retweeted on Twitter a lot today, and was waiting to read it for myself, but was sad to discover when I opened my LE that there was no personal message from Sean waiting for me. This really should have been in every box instead of just a press kit.

Having said that, it's a touching message, and it's so impressive to me that despite a flood wiping out their office and months of work, a lawsuit from a corporate bully, and even death threats, along with the seemingly-impossible task of making a procedurally generated universe like this, somehow they did it. No, impressive is too slight a word. More like inspirational and awestruck. I'm not sure in Sean's place that I could have kept going through all the adversities and sleepless nights.

Regardless of what any of us will think of the game, he and the rest of the Hello team deserve a ton of respect. This sort of no-compromises, shoot for the moon attitude is not something we see much in big release games these days. They should be very proud of what they've accomplished.

That is amazing. We need 100 more people like Sean Murray in this industry. I hope the silly and likely very front loaded backlash against what NMS is or isn't doesn't discourage him.

If you 100% his previous games, Joe Danger / Joe Danger 2, you're given a secret email address to contact him. If you do you get a very heartfelt, individualized reply and a little booklet that tells the history of the ups and downs of the studio and the games' development.

And somehow this is even more amazing.

Feels inappropriate and completely calculated to get a reaction like this. Hope the game cane speak for itself because the "gee wiz guys I really hope you like it" thing is sort of played out at this point.

Pretty much.

And how is this even an indie game at this point. It's got major publishers backing it. All that marketing wasn't from this guy's piggy bank.

It's sweet that he feels this passionately about his game, but really, do we need the public love letter guilt tripping potential buyers into enjoying it? It comes off as a tad pathetic? Even slightly creepy?

The amount of negativity & cynicism in here is ridiculous, WOW.

The amount of joy people take in shitting on and being cynical assholes about a project someone is actually passionate about never ceases to amaze me.

You know what I love? Creators who love creating and genuinely put themselves into the art and games they create, and thankfully there are more of them than people who think it's cool to crap on others for having emotions about something they work their ass off on for 5 years.

It's a letter sent to reviewers, not the public. They're the ones who chose to make this public. Good job reading the OP!

Because Hello Games are completely self funding NMS.
Listening to the new Giant Bombcast and Adam Boyes who use to be third party relations at Playstation said HG do their own PR, QA, interview selection etc.

All Sony are is distributors with some marketing muscle. Pretty sure that still qualifies as indie bruh.

I love this, I am looking forward to the game, and there are games where for the people who make it it is genuinely a labour of love. I don't see why this game is different.

If anything it has been more of a labour than most games, good work fellas.

I purchased this game even though I knew it has mining and I hate mining games but I loved Joe Danger that damn much and i felt I needed to support Sean & Hello as a thank you for Joe Danger.
I will probably play NMS for about 5 to 10 hours then move on because of said mining, I know this, but I really try to do my best to support devs I respect. Needless to say, I respect Hello.

Guy showing emotion over a project he has worked himself into the ground to complete, and for which he seemingly cares a great deal, is pathetic and creepy. Right.

Exactly. Well said.

If you feel uncomfortable or embarrassed for someone else showing genuine emotion and passion then it's you who have the issue, not them.

Yeah it sure is creepy when someone is incredibly passionate about something they spent years creating.

Creepy? Lol

My god that word is thrown around so easily now. Shesh

Nice letter.

Glad I don't have the cynicism some of you do. What a shitty way to consume entertainment.

Don't shit on people for being cynical. Yeah, it's bad to be negative 24/7, but the writing's been on the wall for NMS to not be what everyone wanted, at least for the past year. I'm sorry I don't share your blind optimism in an indie game being sold for $60. I'm sorry my hype was lost after two years of the same exact demo on different planets being shown at every large games event. I'm sorry I'd rather hold onto my money for something more deserving of it.

I'm not gonna tell people to not buy it or not enjoy it just because I won't. But for you to act like you pity someone for looking at a purchase through a critical lens before spending their money is just ridiculous.

That's a neat little touch.

Have no interest in the game myself, but I can't deny it's a very ambitious and interesting project. Hope it lives up to the hype!
