I really wish him and his team the best, even if the game doesn't turn out to be what I wanted. They have put such obvious hope and care into their work.

It's weird to think about how much love was poured into a game that's procedurally generated. Usually that kind of thinking is reserved for purely handcrafted games.

Count me in as someone who believes this is genuinely an amazing experience for Sean and his team. He has never struck me as anything but genuine, and he's reaching for the stars with this game. I wasn't convinced I was going to enjoy it, but I was 100% sold on it being worth my support.

There's too much cynicism in this world. Too many people only looking out for themselves with no passion and no desire to inspire others. It's sad to see, but it's not the only way to live. I'm glad Sean found something he clearly believes in to do with the past few years and wish only that others here will be as fortunate.

This was in press kits? Ew. I thought it was like The Witcher and it was just a general message in all copies.

(Really happy for the team etc. but this sort of stuff just being in press kits I hate)

Sean comes across as such a nice guy who just enjoys life and is super positive. His dream is shared by many, including myself and I realy hope Hello Games comes out on top with this game. Pure passion project of ridiculous scale, and after playing the game for the past two days. I personally, absolutely love it :)

Edit: God damn some of you are debbie downers.

Thanks for sharing that OP. I am SO damn excited for this! Now even more so after seeing how much personal passion was put into it. :)

I just saw this on a banned site and wondered why there wasn't anything on Gaf about it then lo and behold lol.

Anyways, must be an incredible feeling for Sean and HG team to launch this game after years of blood sweat and tears.
The note should've been included in regular copies but it all just reaffirms what a humble dreamer Sean Murray has been. Can't wait to start playing the game finally tonight!

It's not like they just hit a button and let the computer make the game. It does a lot of the legwork, sure, but humans still have to do all the coding, art direction, core asset design, gameplay, music, voice work, UI, play testing, bug squashing, algorithm tweaking, etc.

Anything can be a labor of love, really, and the amount of work that's put into even a seemingly simple game is staggering.

If you 100% his previous games, Joe Danger / Joe Danger 2, you're given a secret email address to contact him. If you do you get a very heartfelt, individualized reply and a little booklet that tells the history of the ups and downs of the studio and the games' development.
Very dope

Much respect to SM and the team for being genuine and creating my dream game. We need more developers who ain't afraid of dreaming big.

I like it. :)

Can't wait to play.

Also, the last sentence of the 2nd paragraph doesn't make sense. Haha. I know what he meant, but it isn't complete.

I'm picking this game up, but I'll hang tight for the PC release and some spare time.

Nice message and Sean seems like a total dude, but man, he needs an editor.

"That you are even taking the time to play our game, when our previous titles might not have".

What? Hello Games' previous games have maybe played their games? Look, I know what he means in the context of the paragraph, but that's a shocker of a sentence.

"At times I can let myself feel proud that ... you are even taking the time to play our game, when our previous titles might not have."

It's an awkward sentence, but I can understand it OK. And he does say he's feeling sick when he's writing it, maybe he was about to hurl forget to proof-read?

This is a nice touch from a guy who clearly cares about his work. However, people shouldn't forget that a lot of devs feel this way, even in big "soulless" AAA, but they aren't necessarily allowed to personally communicate those feelings.

Yep, count me on board with this sentiment. He also seems pretty full of himself on the procedurally generated content. Ultimately the game is going to be judged on its own merits, not how much indie-heart-outpour the guy can dump out.
I feel the same way. It's gonna be really interesting to see how NMS reviews.

Did you think they didn't put in love into crafting the code and programming that would create their universe?

"Procedural generated" isn't codeword for kicking back and letting the computer sort it out.

Not sure the game is for me personally, but I can't help but love the guy. He's always seemed genuine and is exactly what the industry needs.

I've had the same exact dream as Sean Murray. If I could just explore the cosmos I'd happily leave this planet and everyone behind to e experience the mysteries, beauty and sheer terror and isolation of space. Even for just a day.

Bought it and it's currently downloading the patch. I'm ready for adventure.

Thank you Hello Games.

I dont know if this game is for me and has lasting power, but the hype and the desire to reward an indie dev shooting for the stars makes me want to support them.

Bought it this morning on PSN.

This Sean guy has been a good dude throughout this pre-release hype, and I'm genuinely happy that his game seems to have so much hype behind it. I hope it's a success.

But I ended up renting this on Gamefly because I'm still not sure what this game is, or if I'll like it. If it seems like something I'll greatly enjoy, then I'll gladly pay $60 to support them.

So I landed on a planet that has load of items worth 26k a piece. I do have to fight or run from sentinels, but it's worth it. I've hit the mother load.

I thought this was a great letter, and I can't believe the amount of cynicism and hate spewing from some people in this thread.

This seems more like someone with anxiety who is slightly panicking before the biggest moment of his life. Kind of like a, "please be gentle, I worked very hard on this" type of thing. Which is fine, but it's not humble so much as it is potential damage control for all of the reviews that will be coming out. Sean said in his hour long interview with IGN that he always feels slightly depressed after the release of a game he was involved in and that he has difficulty not taking negative reviews personally.

That's exactly what it is, damage control. Guy knows the game is over hyped and is pre-emptively trying to lower expectations to mitigate bad reviews and backlash.

But don't take my word for it. Keep an eye on user reviews for the next month or so.

Nothing if it's the same caliber as other $60 games. But don't go shoving that down the throats of reviewers if you're selling it full price.
This post really feels to me like waaaa developers shouldn't be communicating with reviewers and others.

Or it could be that he wanted to send a nice letter to reviewers?
