Sony demos 4K/HDR enhancements for PS4 Pro at TGS (FFXV, RE7, UC4, Horizon, Infamous)

Hmmm would it be possible to have improved it that much looking damn good
That dude from Easy Allies says that the OG PS4 version has been improved a lot:

I'll add the tweets to this quote.

Enhanced mode simply means at least 1080p resolution. That's it. Games just have to be able to detect which system it's running on. Developers are not required to do anything else for supporting the PS4 Pro.

I don't expect a single AAA game starting in Q1 to not support it at more than just baseline 1080p though

Ya a game done right is insane in HDR.

I am currently running tests on 3 tv's and showed friends a game about to be announced out of NDA(Yes I got the ok to show them).
Responses when I turned HDR on.
"Are...you fucking shitting me."
"Oh...oh....oooooo."

My favorite was from my own family member "I will give you 3000 for that thing right now."

LOL.
The pro will be nice at any resolution but man games pop with HDR.

Heh, FFXV is perhaps one of the reasons I'm most excited about the PS4 Pro as it stands a good chance of addressing the performance issues that are quite evident in the near final build (well, at least the original "gone gold" version). It might just have enough extra horsepower to solve those problems while boosting image quality (which was poor).

For games with no PC alternative, it's a very good thing.

Asked in another thread so I'll ask here too just to get more clear answers. If I get the pro right but not a 4k tv at least not yet, lets use ffxv as an example the trees and grass look much better in the pro version will my version still look like that if I have the pro but not the 4k tv?

Sorry if this was confusingly asked. Don't know much graphics wise

Yes.

Developers will let you switch between the options(if there are any) most definitely. You cant lock game settings behind TV's.

Oh sorry, no i understand it at a base level, just more like how the actual extra horsepower is going to be utilized is what i was talking about.

It depends on what the developer wants to do with it. We keep bringing up 4K checkerboard rendering because it is, according to a few developers, the easiest method to take advantage of Pro's power with minimal effort. But other developers can do other things with it. They can have one mode, two modes, 3 modes, 4 modes, with each one doing different things taking advantage of the power(better graphics, better resolution, better fps, any combinaton of those ect)

Totally agreed. And improved FFXV is a huge selling point for me. I really wish they had made the bundle a Pro console.

It's statements like these that make me think about swapping my 40" 1080p LCD Bravia for a 4K HDR Capable set ASAP...

The reactions and impressions I've seen on HDR - as well as the washed out comparisons I've seen - all have me really, really tempted.

One thing I don't understand.

Sony said HDR is now available for every PS4, so there is a difference between PS4'HDR and PS4 Pro's HDR ?

Im still not super clear how the pro works, even after all the reading ive done

Like is it basically that the games are made a lot more pretty at 1080P with better AA and such, and then the GPU can render it at 4K via checkerboarding for no additional cost, so we get a heavily improved 1080P image being upscaled if you have a 4K TV/Native if you dont.

Or is it more like, games have a mode for 1080P sets (Improve AA and whatever else) and then a separate mode for 4K where it bumps the resolution as high as possible and then uses checkerboard rendering for the 4K signal (in some cases like TLOU it is native and checkerboard isnt used). But if thats the case, for these games is there no improvement to textures/AA/Draw distance? Like is it just the PS4 version running at a higher res?

Forgive me if these answers are out there, like i know Tomb Raider has the multiple mode thing. I just cant fully wrap my head around it

Edit: Regardless though, FFXV looks phenomenal

basically, the easiest and fastest way for dev to add a pro mode is to simply up the resolution with no extra effect added, even if the dev only do this bare minimum upgrade, the higher resolution will result in much better image quality whether you're playing in 4k tv or 1080p tv (4k images downscale to 1080p tv give you supersampling)

again, the example above is the bare minimum, dev are free to add extra effects and still up the resolution if they want to

some game like Tomb Raider, will do above the minimum and provide option so that ps4 pro will only output a 1080p render, but with either effects dialed up, or unlocked framerate getting above 45 fps currently.

It looks amazing ! But until a proper gaming 4k +HDR TV (with input lag less than 20ms) shows up , i will not jump on ps4 pro .

Man, I really need some FFXV pro footage. It's such a beautiful looking game hampered by the current PS4 hardware, if the pro is like the TGS 2014 footage then I'm more than happy with my pro purchase.

No. As long as you have a 4K TV that supports HDR, it can render it the same. Its a spectrum of color enabled by the TV's color gamut, nothing to do with the console, but the software and the hardware have to handshake

Only 4K Tvs had HDR and not all 4K ones. Pretty much any 2016 model has HDR.

Edit: people are refuting my 2016 claim but I didn't see many 2016 4K sets that didn't at least support it through an update.

What kind of HDMI does HDR require? Is the 1.4 on the PS4 enough?

The HDMI on the OG PS4 was actually overdeveloped and specced well above what was required for HDMI 1.4 certification.

As a result, all that is required on Sony's end is the firmware update and it is capable of passing HDR information through an HDMI 2.0 Cable into an HDR TV and supporting the effect.

How would I check if there is HDR? My set is the Vizio D 40inch 40k.

Best way would be to look up your specific model number or look in the manual if you still have it.

Pretty much any 2016 model has HDR.

Not true at all.

I think we need to keep our expectations in check and not act like the requirement of a Pro mode means something. Remember, anything that is done is going to cost more time, money, and resources to implement, and could be a trade off from something else in the game, and games still need to run on the PS4. I don't expect things to be greatly enhanced. I think we'll see things slightly enhanced at best.

Even if it's just checkerboard rendering up to 4k I expect nearly every major AAA game to support it in 2017. Judging by what pre-orders are looking like the Pro is going to sell very well

That looks like the Sony zd9 with its master backlight drive. That's a top tier tv folks so dial back your expectations of you game on less.

I'm not so sure bro, if you look at the stand it appears to be metallic silver. I was under the impression the ZD9 had a black brushed aluminum finish.

It all depends on the developers! if they want better AA, better textures, better draw distance, better framerate, better resolution, better whatever...

The PS4 Pro is just a more powerful PS4 and supports 4K the rest is for the developers to decide what to do with that power.

I believe its PS4 Pro running on Sony's new Z-series tv. Which has the new X1 Extreme Processor said to be 40% more powerful than the current X1 processor.

Sony X1 processor does awesome job upscaling 1080P content on its current 4K HDR TV's. I own Sony 43" 4K HDR tv model # XBR43X800D and can attest that the current PS4 /Xbox One games look epic on this tv upscaled due to the X1 processor. If the newer processor is 40% better then the image quality will look much better.

Your avatar tells me that you also might be interested that PS4 Pro support is also coming to Gravity Rush 2.

:))

Even just being able to play optimized versions of FFXV and RE7 in the following months is a DEAL. Gravity Rush 2 Pro mode at launch would be the icing on the cake. Nioh next please !

It's not. I dunno why people keep jumping to conclusions that it's the Z series when the article says what TV is being used!

Sony please release video files to download so I can actually view them on my 4K TV with HDR and see the difference.
