No Mafia III Review Copies Ahead of Launch

- My only glaring negative right now is lack of HUD options. At the very least there should be a rearview mirror and speed gauge toggle, but I also want to turn off the mini-map sometimes. The screen is just needlessly surrounded by things when you're in a vehicle and have mission objectives.

I would've liked the option of a rear view mirror toggle...from watching videos, something about it just doesn't seem right to me...almost like it is out of sync with the main view. I'm getting the PC version though, so maybe a mod will come out to get rid of it.

I haven't played enough to give detailed answers but...

Regarding gun sounds: Out of the box, I wasn't disappointed, but I also wasn't blown away. It's ok, not RDR tier. Like 99% of shooters I wish they were mixed louder, but I also didn't have time to mess with the audio settings yet, or really pump the volume. I'll take note of this as I get deeper into the game, into more shootouts, and use more weapons.

Vehicles are solid, muscle cars in particular are throaty, but again, I wish the mixing on engine noise was louder. Crashing and tire squeals are noticeably loud, but the radio was drowning out the engine a little, and I didn't adjust it yet because I was vibing.

Thanks, so like most games then. Guns should be the loudest sounds in the game but most of the time they aren't even close for some reason.

Thank you for the impressions everyone! Extremely excited to get my hands on the game tomorrow. One of my most anticipated games of the year after being a big Mafia 2 fan.

Just got my first hard crash on XB1.

My impressions so far is that the story seems good so far (probably 30-40 minutes in)and told in a very interesting way. Have not done enough combat so far but I think the driving will end up being hit or miss with people.

Also a recorded a game clip via the Xbox tools but it's muted. Probably because of the music.

Net did you change the driving settings to Simulation? How do you feel about the heaviness of the cars - similar to Mafia 2, does it feel like it has weight and controls well? Also, have you found vehicles that feel good to drive? Do certain car classes feel completely different?

So excited.

Reading some great impressions here I may finally be about to come off the fence.
Everything has good early impressions from people here. Even Devil's Third. As interested in this as I was, I think I'm gonna wait a few weeks to a month before I start taking impressions seriously. The honeymoon phase is real.

Just finished playing for a few hours. Haven't done too much yet.

- Probably the most story focused opening I've seen in an open world crime game of this type in a long time, most likely since Mafia 2. The first 90 minutes-2 hours are basically a montage of quick gameplay scenarios, traditional cutscenes, and documentary footage/interviews setting up the meat of the game. Very, very interesting storytelling style. Cutscenes are well done, easily a cut above any comparable open world games in cinematography and writing. Almost feels like the kind of flair that MachineGames gave Wolfenstein: The New Order. Performances are good, quickly establishing many characters and creating a nice energy right out of the gate.

- Combat mechanics are very snappy. Playing on medium with no aim assist, the few shootouts I've been in so far have been scrappy and physical. Guns have heavy recoil and hit feedback on mooks feels solid. The cover system is basic, but works how you'd expect, and cover swapping is very quick. No GTA awkwardness here. I haven't done nearly enough to judge the AI yet, so we'll see.

- Driving with the "simulation" option feels good. Cars shift their weight and can lose traction in a similar way to Mafia 2/GTAIV, but never to the point that it feels sloppy or loose. Damage modeling is weak though, which makes those big heavy crashes lose a little of their punch. I wish the cars had crumple zones similar to GTAIV, even if these 60s gas guzzlers were tough.

- I'm pretty sure some people are going to take issue with some of the daytime lighting, but I actually like what they're doing here visually. During the day the game has a baked, bleached look to it when you're facing the sun, almost like a "nostalgia" filter in a period film. I'm frequently reminded of the way sunlight works in Assassin's Creed Syndicate actually. At night it takes on a cooler hue with lots of lights and neon popping off the downtown areas. Very bloom heavy and hazy. Some ground/wall textures are a bit eeehhhh, but the overall art direction is strong. Great interiors, use of lighting, big chunky characters and vehicles, strong city design, etc.

- My only glaring negative right now is lack of HUD options. At the very least there should be a rearview mirror and speed gauge toggle, but I also want to turn off the mini-map sometimes. The screen is just needlessly surrounded by things when you're in a vehicle and have mission objectives.

I haven't gotten into the city takeover gameplay yet (the icons aren't even on the map), but I like it so far. Very story heavy upfront and lays a good foundation for the violence to come. I'm right on the cusp of the game opening up. Curious what the rumored day 1 patch will address. I already downloaded a 100mb update.

Also: Hood rolls/slides are great, and every open world game needs them

Great impression, thanks !

Are you playing on X1 or PC ?

So excited.

Switched to simulation driving immediately. Feels weighty, and cars take a while to get up to speed and accelerate in general. Flinging cars around corners feels great imo, reminds me of classic chase movie drifts from Driver 1. Haven't tested enough classes to do a full comparison.

So it's an open world game.

I don't feel that Deus EX, the Witcher or GTA III/VI/V felt that way.
Apparently, there is something really redondant about the game play in itself. I mean, more than your usual open world.

I feel that the story and the setting will make me buy the game anyway, got to pop those Klansmen :)

There is no forum space on the net that gets more carried away with something than GAF. Im with you on this, game looks good but holding out, GAF hype has got me too many times in the past only to be letdown by the rose tindedness of purchase justification.

This is everything I need to hear - thanks for the reply. Can't wait to just soak in the atmosphere while driving, so glad to hear the simulation setting feels heavy!

I'm not a huge fan of either GTA or Mafia (enjoy them from time to time), but for those of you who enjoy the open world genre and are expecting something other than repetitive kill missions, why do you keep fooling yourselves?

Not surprised to hear about the repetitiveness of the missions but that's not something that worries me too much, just give me lots of weapons to use and fuck about with. Hell one of my favourite games of last year was Mad Max and you could say that's very repetitive at its core too, mission structure wise.

I'm just joking though I consider those games to be exceptions. I've already purchased Mafia 3 so I'm invested.

The sandbox elements are fun and exploring the world that gets built is always fun even if the missions are always repetitive. Some good jokes, decent controls and great music go a long way to helping them stay enjoyable.

Be warned though that someone on reddit said that the first three hours were amazing and then the gameplay became repetitive and boring.
The 6 hour update is interesting:
EDIT: 6 hour update
mission structure is insanely repetitive.
weapons are not very varied.
melee kill animations (while satisfying) are not varied enough to keep the satisfaction rolling.
story and writing continues to impress.
not much to explore in the city, basically driving from this "kill everyone" mission to another "kill everyone" mission.
I initially loved the collectibles, but now I'm realizing the only incentive for me to explore the boring buildings of the city is to see naked girls in the playboy magazines
3 hours = 'holy shit this is amazing', 6 hours = 'I wish there wasn't so much gameplay in between story beats'
I wonder if this is a case of it genuinely being overly repetitive or if the OP just isn't that into open world gaming.

EDIT: This is kind of what I was worried about with stealth and exploration and their incentivization
there's no incentive for it and it's really boring. there are only a handful of different stealth kill animations to boot
other than going into buildings to find playboy magazines, no, there's really nothing to explore. overall my opinions went from "holy shit this is awesome" in the first three hours to "please give me more story beats so I don't have to keep killing these people again and again and again in different buildings with the same 4 guns and 6 execution moves"
Hopefully the people with copies of the game in this thread will have better impressions at six hours!

The guy admitted that he don't know a lot about open-world game so it could be it...

5 Ways Mafia III is a different open world game.

I didn't realize the commanders could go rogue. That sounds interesting, but potentially annoying to have to mop up. I wonder can you kill them?

Yeah, I saw that.

I think that his opinion is still very valid. It's not going to help me to only read impressions and reviews from people who love open world games. It's good to have a mix of veterans, neophytes, lovers and haters.

The older I've gotten the less I've enjoyed side quest stuff, at first I loved it but now when it comes to games I like my gameplay more streamlined.

I still enjoy open world games but I just concentrate on the main story I did exactly that on my second play through of GTA V and loved it.

I have no idea if this game is for me or not it looks fun I'll give it that and I'm fine with lots of killing but I do like a bit of variation when it comes to main missions.

This game will disappointment. I have NOTHING to justify the hype. Just another open world game in an admittedly cool setting. I don't think that will be enough to carry it though.

From those impressions game is just as I thought it will be. There are very little open world games these days that are not repetitive and that includes Witcher 3 too. Story is more important to me and based on impressions story is good. So if I could do 100% in every Assassin's Creed game up to Unity I will be fine with Mafia 3 too :D

I learned a long time ago to only do what I want in open world games and turn off my impulse to do absolutely everything - it made my experiences far more enjoyable

That's a very fair way to play them, but you've still got to have a solid foundation to make the rest of the experience fun. I think the important question here still is if the mechanics and baseline progression through the story wears thin or not.

Gaffers in this thread need to hurry back and report.

I also really dig how gun play has real weight to it, with baddies reacting appropriately to where they are shot and crumbling to the ground.
I tried to hype y'all about this last year ;)
Damn, they retained the great hit reactions from Mafia 2.
Leg shot:

Hand shot:

And now the location-specific damage like shooting the gun hands or legs to go for a melee takedown. At least this means I'll enjoy it as a pure shooter like that game.

All open world game suffer from repetitive stuff in them, I am still looking forward to playing this tomorrow. As long as the story stuff is good then I don't mind doing stuff in between.

I switched off all the PoI's in Witcher 3,which made it tons betters as most of the side quests were pretty good, It suffered worse in Blood & Wine, It just a way to pad games out I suppose.

Any word from those who got it early on the mission variety and overall structure of the game?
It was clear pretty soon that the game wouldn't be a technical showpiece like Mafia 1 & 2, I'm just worried that it'll get as repetitive as Mad Max or any of the "take over every territory on the map" type of games.

There are some impressions from a reddit user on the previous page who put in 6hrs, plus some GAF impressions.
