Polygon: PRE-REVIEW: FINAL FANTASY 15’S FIRST 15 HOURS

Final Fantasy VII Remake looks great

Even in the deepest darkest dungeons, there are moments of shared levity and character development. The best example from my time: In an icy cold dungeon in chapter three, the characters frequently comment on how cold they are. At one point, Prompto points out that the tips of Noctis’ spiky hair have frosted over. He responds: "Really? How does it look?"

Lol. Self-awareness from the writers. I think I'll like these guys.

Pre-Review? Wtf is that? It's just a preview. Polygon and his clickbaits.

Really grasping at straws here to find something to get mad about, eh?

As someone who pretty much hated the gamescom demo this is very encouraging. It does look a lot better now graphically and it seems to follow through gameplay-wise. Very good to hear.

If anything, I would trust Phil Kollar, at least to say how he really feels about something.

Just as a comparison, he rated Star Ocean 5 a 5/10.

It's true that previews can be misleading, but his preview is 15 hours into the game, which is enough to give anyone a true sense of a game (besides story developments past that point).

Anyway, he seems to really like it, as he's been tweeting about how much he likes it.

Actually reading the article, it doesn't sound all that good or different from the fist two hours or so that we've seen, like we figured out how the game is structured. He even calls out the "open world bloat". eh.

It's bloat in the sense that it's optional activities they give you to fill the open world, but he also comments on how each quest feels like it was given attention and is unique with cutscenes and the like. That's an unexpected bonus since I was frankly expecting DAI-level side quests.

If anything, I would trust Phil Kollar, at least to say how he really feels about something.

And got a ton of shit for it in the GAF review thread. Until we played it.

If this was negative Polygon would have been torn to shreds for a so-called "Pre-Review" lol... Will wait for legitimate reviews of the full game before getting excited.

If the preview was negative it would be gospel, the definitive proof of a trainwreck and it there was no preview the game would not have enough marketing to be relevant.

Sometimes you can't win

No, I think a lot of people would come and driveby post with "lol, told you it was shit". I'm getting flashbacks of when the Titan demo was shown. That thread was a complete shitshow.

Disagree this depends on the game.

Most games I've ever played in my entire life, 15 hours was enough to know if I liked it or didn't. The only time that changed, is when I played a game a lot, and then put it down, and came back after with a different perspective months later. Other than that, the first 15 hours have been enough to tell me, barring some weird drop in quality, which I've never personally experienced.

Eh, you might be right. Probably would appear both. Either way... "pre-reviews" are dumb, it's a preview feature... and how are those? exactly, dumb.

Surprise Surprise Mofo's the King is Back!

Glad I stuck with my gut and pre ordered. Now if only I just didn't get pissant membership points from the friday giveaways.

Yeah we'll see. I thought DriveClub VR was going to be a killer app based on pre-release impressions, but that hardly turned out to be the case. My skepticism remains unchanged.

Really want it to be good though.

The combat in the video seems like good ol Platinum demo bad to me and the trial of titan still terrible...

Nice to finally see the flans

Just finished watching the whole thing. The game looks like it has come together really nicely. I can't wait to play this.

And this is just the first 4 chapters. Things are gonna get crazy later in the game with more powerful attacks/summons/full armiger and ascension abilities.

I love the party interactions as well.

And how exactly does that prove that 15 hours are enough to give a good assessment of a game? It's more a statement on the types of games you've played than the actual reality.

Like I already mentioned above one of the best examples of a game that just totally broke after even maybe the first 30 hours(I don't really remember how long it took to get 60) is Diablo 3 at launch state and it took the time for an extra expansion to truly fix those problems.

And really the point here isn't to shit on FF it's really just again if one actually really cares about being informed it's always wise to consider many perspectives.
And especially for the press it wouldn't hurt if possible for them to get away from this I played X hours I can totally assess the game mentality and actually frame their perspective correctly so readers have the correct context.

the combat still looks awful to me. &, with all the random chatter, it still sounds awful, too. i'm just never gonna be ready for this game, unfortunately :( ...

I can't really argue with what you've said, but again, I'm speaking from my own point of view. I've never experienced my opinion changing too much on a game after 15 hours. It's enough to feel how everything comes together, if the core systems are good or bad, how the story initially develops, etc.

I understand being skeptical but it's also not good to completely discredit what someone says about it. I've already played hours of Duscae so I know what I am getting into anyway.

The combat looks awful.
The crabs they fought were damage sponges and just crowded together against Noctis. There was no pattern or enemy attack design or apparent weak points on the enemies. The fact that blocks and parries are qtes just make things worse. I am happy that the game visually has improved between trailers though. I guess the PS4 Pro gave Square a little more wiggle room.
