NPD - FFXV experienced the best console launch month in franchise history

The moment Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XV had shipped 1 additional million units I knew it must have had a crazy good launch in the US.

In hindsight the delay to November 30 was a great move, I doubt it would have done that well in October.

Anyway, congrats to Tabata, fair's fair. He made a big hit in the US for FF and he deserves credit. I've been giving him alot of shit for everything else!

Year in US sales...

714x-1

Shooters, sports, and muh FF.

I'm not really sure what they could do with a FFXV-2. A prequel might make more sense. Hilariously, Noctis replacing Lightning's role in the hot mess god/goddess plots of XIII-2 and LR would actually link up better to FFXV's ending than Lightning's abrupt role did with FFXIII's ending.

If you count the expansion that they are doing FFXV-2 then sure, they wont pass on it. But SE isn't going to release a full FFXV-2 like it did with the other lightning games. People got exhausted by them in the end and you can probably get more people to get an expansion than another full release.

The main story is done, but the world and assets are still there waiting to be 'played'. It's easy.

FFXV being in the top 3 selling games for Xbox One is actually really impressive for a JRPG. Looks like SE made the right call keeping it multi-platform

Beautiful bad game. My least favorite FF by far and most disappointing game of 2016. Still stoked it's doing well for the sake of the franchise.

I guess making sure the game launched by November no matter what and adding whatever needs adding later was.....the right call.

Oh great, then Shu wasn't lying when he said (I think it was him) The Last Guardian exceeded expectations. Really great news.

He said that? Link?

Great news if so.

I wish it was a Persona 5 thread, a better game that will have limited success because it isn't called Final Fantasy.

People don't care about story.
It's a win for JRPGs I think though. It at least kind of showcases that given that genre was never that set in its ways to begin with(gameplay wise JRPGs have huge variation) there can be a form of it that can make big money. Maybe this makes publishers consider trying to build up something within the genre.

Also FFXVI pls don't forget the lessons that should be learned with FFXV.

Don't be salty bro.

P5 will do great too for its scope, and probably better than P4.

Also, going full mainstream has its cons too, so be careful with what you wish for :p

Heh also looking at those "FF is dead" post in Media Create threads are ridiculous now. High budget FF is here to stay.

Holy shit wrap it up Japan. FFXVI to feature Captain America and Iron Patriot breaking bad in an open world adventure with a cover of Champagne Supernova as the theme song.

But FFXV sold well starring a group of Japanese male hosts? Clearly, that's what America wants.

Will GTA V ever stop selling? Jesus.

I wish it was a Persona 5 thread, a better game that will have limited success because it isn't called Final Fantasy.

It also cost a lot less, though.

Sure, it would be awesome to see Persona 5 selling as much as FF, but it doesn't need to. And frankly, it's probably a better game for it.

Don't worry Persona 5 will be Atlus best selling game by far. also I'm really happy for The Last Guardian hope Gravity Rush 2 does good as well.

Not to rag on Persona's gameplay, but I think being wrapped in a Japanese high school relationship-sim is one of those things that will make it hard to ever truly become mainstream in the west.

Square just shot themselves in the foot, but they healed up, and are faster and stronger than they were before.

And the console market in US & Japan are comparable in popularity atm? They're not.

I get his point but the game is still a success in Japan for 2016.

Even with shrinking Japanese market the drop XV had in japan is huge and can't be explained solely by it. It had far bigger drop than many other popular series. I mean I like the game and it's great to see that it was success in west but it did bomb in Japan.

Wouldn't be surprised if an FFXVI that stayed on console pulled an RE7, and went ahead and just hired American writers for the story.

Honestly, SE needs better writers specifically scenario writers also they have a dire need for better scenario and voice acting directors. Its the one thing that they are absolutely lacking right now.

And its not that they've been particularly good before either. The jump to higher fidelity hasn't been kind to the way they portray stories with the typical overacted animations clashing violently with the voice acting.

Plenty of flaws but a great game. Tied with Overwatch for my 2016 GotY.

If FFXIII can get a sequel, no less 2. This one should get at least get 1 minimum.

Happy days Square-Enix, well deserved.

Underserved but good for square enix, and hopefully they do better next time. I suppose they could hardly do worse than the 10 year fiasco this was.

It's what I'm hoping at least.

In regards to potential platform split... Even if the game did say, 1.5m combined and 20% of those sales were on Xbox (as about expected) it's still a good 300k there which would be good enough for 3rd on its chart. I mean 300k would be still great numbers on their own but a drop in the ocean to where the audience actually is. And will no doubt calapse far harder on Xbox too.I hope we do get a confirmed split though.
