I had my girlfriend watch the extended commercial after watching the 30 second spot to get her opinion as a (relative) outsider. She thought the full-length ad was pretty solid and really sold the overall platform, whereas the TV spot made it too easy to ignore the console and just focus on Zelda, and thus generally wasn't very strong. Which is pretty much exactly as I felt.

Switch trended a lot more than Zelda online for a bit, but I'm pretty sure that in essence this was an ad for Zelda as much as it was for the Switch. Nintendo's Marketing Manager has already confirmed a campaign for more ads to cover all their bases for the next 15 months.

The anacedotal responses are interesting, positive and negative. I'm glad Nintendo put the effort in to try and get the word out either way.

Small sample size but there was no reaction at all from the bar I was at. This will be the Wii U 2.0
Well... not to be "that guy" but talking video games or even Nintendo at a bar is a huge barrier to what a person is really after when frequenting such a place. Nailing a peice of tail. At least that's my experience and perception lol.

everyone at my bar was talking about the game...weird really, you would think they would talk about the commercials instead of the game switching momentum

I don't know, I feel like a new Imagine Dragons song that came out on Friday wasn't fitting nor recognizable... and I don't think it is that good of a song either.

Zelda looks so good though.

Tomorrow morning there will be a top 10 Super Bowl Commercial list from a number of sites. With how drab many of this year's commercials were, Nintendo might get lucky and be on a number of them. It was pretty good, but definitely not the best commercial this time around, and not at much of an impact as the Pokémon one last year.

No one mentioned the switch at the night-time funeral I went to and had it streaming on my tablet with the speakers on, drowning out the eulogy.

The ad is fine, but I agree with the earlier criticism that they should have had the device docked initially like in the reveal trailer.

Funny or impactful commercials are trending.

Nintendo wasn't that. Already looked through some commercials top 10's and Nintendo is in none of them

All the headlines are going to be about Brady, that Comeback, and Falcons choking.

Don't think they'll be much talk about the commercials this year. All of the ones I saw were forgettable honestly. I think the only one I found interesting was Fast and Furious, but only because i've only seen the first two. I didn't realize they fight against submarines and tanks now.

But hey, at least they put something out there and now have a commerical to use

You guys put way too much stock on an immediate impact a Super Bowl ad. It's all about spreading awareness, especially in the NFL-loving USA, and it did its job.

The key thing here is how consistent Nintendo will advertise the Switch after this and after launch.

All the headlines are going to be about Brady, that Comeback, and Falcons choking.

Nobody will talk much about the ads because for the first time in quite a while the Super Bowl is actually more interesting than the ads lol. The storylines will be huge, and every news and sports outlets will discuss this thing for a long time.

There will always be people who prefer the commercials over the game.

I think the goal of the commercial was to show it off to a wider audience that when searching for it later would see that pre-orders are sold out making them believe that this thing seems to be fairly cool and popular so maybe they should try and get one. Most people I know already know what the switch is so I'm more interested to see if any of my co-workers mention it to me tomorrow. Though this won't mean much either way.

The bigger thing is idk if the price for this spot was worth it. I mean the commercials both short and long forms are great and will get great use over the next month and some. But was buying the Super Bowl ad slot worthwhile? It's a tough call. On one side you could argue that Nintendo has done enough already being able to sell out pre-orders for launch to the die-hard fans that will most likely act as ambassadors for the hardware post launch. On the other side you could argue that this is Nintendo's way of putting up. Dropping that much money on an ad shows they really believe in this product and have learned from their mistakes with Wii U, could also help ease concerns from their investors. You gotta spend money to make money.

Kudos to the ad agency though for making the Switch seem fun, practical, portable, but also serious/mature and not childish.

Without any comparison data it's hard to say if this means anything. For example, how did the data for the Pokemon SB ad look? Immediate impact would be limited by the fact that the actual game was still happening. We would have to see a longer comparison of data from the week or so prior to the game, to the week or so after the game.

It's also important to remember that this is literally a kick off to a larger advertising campaign for the Switch for the rest of the year.

”Think about your 40- to 45-year-old parent who has really fond memories of playing Zelda growing up, sitting there watching Super Bowl with their 10- or 12-year-old child who maybe hasn't experienced Zelda yet."

”This isn't just a six to eight week launch campaign. This is really a 15 month campaign for us, to say nothing of our plans for 2018. You're going to see a number of other touch points, including additional 30 or 60 second executions in the coming weeks that emphasize the full proposition, meaning those multiple demographics, including kids, teenagers, young adults, parents, active gamers, casual gamers and so forth."

You guys put way too much stock on an immediate impact a Super Bowl ad. It's all about spreading awareness, especially in the NFL-loving USA, and it did its job.

The question, though, is: Did it?

I know a lot of people who had tuned out of the game before the Switch ad aired and only came back late in the fourth quarter to witness Atlanta's complete implosion/New England's meteoric comeback. The ads up to the point of the Switch reveal were lackluster with the ones generating the most "buzz" being the Mr. Clean ad and the AirBNB diversity ad. Even the Budweiser ad was muted by the fact that it was out there way ahead of time.

The amount of awareness that was spread is likely extremely limited. And those who did see the ad and become interested, how do you think they'll feel come March 3rd when they realize they aren't getting a Switch because Nintendo is shipping a pathetic amount which have all been sold to die hard fans (and some scalpers) through preorders?

I do agree with you that what counts going forward is their campaign throughout the rest of the year. The original Wii had a very good, very concise ad campaign that helped sell the system. Switch needs the same. But considering so far Nintendo hasn't exactly been consistent on what the Switch's primary role will be (handheld? console? motion control? traditional gaming?) with their own fanbase, I can't say I'm optimistic they'll have a strong marketing campaign.

The Pokemon ad wasn't selling anything.
It was just an ad celebrating a milestone.

An aside about that, most retailers closed off preorders to allocate their remaining stock to in-store launch day.

What they're consistent on is that it does all these things, and that it doesn't have a "primary" role. It's only us dumb fans that fight over whether they're catering more to our own personal use cases.

Everyone at my bar mentioned why they should buy this Switch thing for Zelda when it's also coming out for the Wii.
I would be pretty surprised to hear everyone at a bar watching the super bowl be so well versed in the Wii U release schedule. Or to know what a Wii U is.
