What are your expectations for Horizon Zero Dawn?

I suppose the combat does look a little repetitive and they've packed the environments so densely that combat looks unavoidable (outside of quests which make combat essential).

This year's Shadow of Mordor? Polished but iterative.

I'm hoping that the combat is more skill based or engaging since it's from a team that has made mostly FPS games. Also it has dungeons? That could be interesting. I'm a sucker for crafting/gathering in games so it has my attention.

Hopefully the story works because it looks a bit self-serious.

Looks like every other open world game to me.

So I expect decently high reviews, lots of praise from the people who have already decided its great, and if I keep hearing great stuff a month or two later I might pick it up.

Are you bashing the game or praising it? :p

I expect it to be mediocre, but because it's a Sony 1st party exclusive, it'll get a ton of praise, and a ton of marketing, so it'll sell well.

Is there something i am not getting ?? is there a new meme.

Its really weird how much negativity surrounds this game pre-launch, and I can't tell if people just want this game to be bad, or are legitimately concerned it will be bad. Everything I've watched/read in previews has been super positive from those who've played it, so I'm thinking there are just an abundance of people who want this game to fail for whatever reason. I'd be kind of shocked if this game sucks based on the previews so far.

I was a little caught off guard by the constant solo chatter. I read a few negative comments on gaf about how much the protagonist talks to herself but I assumed people were overreacting. Turns out, nope, she is constantly talking or making sounds. I was surprised by that. I would prefer a quieter protagonist like Wander from SOTC so the sounds of the world and animals fill the soundscape.

Do Sony 1st parties get unwarranted praise pretty regularly in your opinion? Curious what you're basing this point off of.

The tone surrounding the game on this forum is the polar opposite of what we are hearing and reading from people that have actually played the game. I think there is want for the game to be bad. I don't care how innocuous some try to phrase it although some of have been blatant with their thoughts. The negativity is off the charts for no reason at all.

Neither. Im neutral on it.

The modern open world game always scores decently high with reviewers.
There is always a subset of people who get way too hyped prior to release. So to then its already a goty title.

But then, after the hype wears off, you barely hear about the game again. See: the division, watch dogs 2 ...

So if people are still commentating on the games quality in 2 months time, thats when ill be interested.

I guess it was mostly seeing the in game map, seeing the way everything worked. It looked very much like an Ubi open world, like Ass Creed and Far Cry, and I'm not sure I can do those kinds of map activity hunts anymore. Seeing all those tokens on the map reminded me of Dragon Age Inquisition, too. I know it'll be nothing like that, but that was such a terrible open world game it just soured me on the genre. Witcher made me realise it doesn't have to be awful and soulless, but I'm still very cautious.

Thanks for the reply. If more people responded like this there'd be less nonsense in the thread.

Could be that people just don't believe the creators of KZ:Shadowfall are capable of making a good video game. I certainly have some reservations after playing through that travesty of a game, but that's been mostly offset by the praise heaped on this game from those who've played it.

Might also be open-world/Ubisofting fatigue that's causing some of the hate. That I can understand.

Watch Dogs 2 never had much hype. The Division was definitely a game people were fawning over(Destiny killer) and was dead a month later. Which is even worse considering MP games are supposed to have a longer shelf life.

It's always looked like a generic AAA Ubisoft-style game to me (I've been critical since its very first reveal). So, I'm not expecting much, everything I've seen doesn't click with me and actively goes against everything I want to see in games.

/edit: to elaborate a little bit: I don't think the game is going to be bad, it just looks to be very focus-tested. It's gonna play exacty the way you expect it to play. It looks good from a technical standpoint, but has very little actual personality in its art; it's playing it safe in every regard. And that to me is not what I want from games. I want games to be bold enough to go to extremes. I don;t want to see the same safe game over and over again, trhat's boring, I want to see something new, or even something not new, but evocative. No one can say Nioh isn;t a Souls rip-off, it totally is., but it's a good rip-off of a type of game we don't really see that much. That's much more interesting to me than a cookie-cutter, solid, dime-a-dozen game like Horzion looks like to me.

But why the sudden shift in attitude towards the game? The two E3 presentations garnered tons of praise then then the major criticism started after PS4 Pro video. Because you climb up towers? That seems to be the point were things things went South. What else about the game is Ubisoft design? I'm not seeing it.

A great looking game with fun combat that slowly grows dull over the course of 20 hours and is only sustained by an interesting premise, which ultimately falls flat.

I'm open to being surprised, but each showing of the game has actually lessened my hype, honestly.

And though I thought Killzone 2 was a good (almost great) game, I think Guerilla's track record since then has been rough.

Well I haven't played Division but Watch Dog 2 is far better , above average game , which the reviewers scored correctly in my opinion, Obviously people are burned by the WD1 That diminish the IP for some.

But Open world game = always high score i can't understand this logic , personally.

I expect great graphics, great art design... But i expect the gameplay to be extremely repetitive, and with some input lag too.

Hope i'm wrong.

I'll add that I hated Shadow Fall. I do want this to be good though, and I love the look.
Also, I'm buying a Switch and Zelda on the 3rd, so this will get a wait. Don't need two open worlders. Hopefully Zelda delivers.

I don't have high expectations.

Killzone 3 and Shadow Fall were mediocre at best, and nothing from the previews makes me feel interested in this besides "graphics".

Im kinda tired of open world games and crafting.

Might pick it up in a couple of month when it's on sale.

There you go again with this defensive nonsense.

This game is freaking number 3 on GAF's Most Anticipated of 2017, so why feel like it's under some constant stream of attack? This game is getting crazy hype, and my view is that some people are possibly getting their hopes up.

I've turned my views around on this game, and I do think that it will be very solid. You say 85 Metacritic at the minimum? What happens if it's more like an 81? Will you be disappointed?

81 is still a good score, and that is what I pegged it at. I just don't think that first entries in a series usually hit it out of the park. There are super legitimate concerns about the game's writing, despite the added talent. That would not kill the game for me, but it could really disappoint those who are really hyped for this.

Looks good and gameplay seems solid, Now it all depends on if the game has an interesting story to tell and the missions are not repetitive.

If the story is half as good as Sony's other top games, this has a chance to be something very special.

I think it's quite simple. People just don't trust previews, especially for longish open world games. Previewers are only playing the game for a very short time, so they're mostly still in the honeymoon phase as they've just seen everyting for the very first time. But what happened 20+ hours later? After people realize that they're basically doing the same thing as they did several hours ago, that's when they realize that they'll be doing that for the next several hours as well. Even The Witcher 3 had this problem of pacing in the open world game. Fortunately, it has good side quests.

Moreover, remember what happened to Dragon Age Inquisition, Fallout 4, Xenoblade X, The Division, and Final Fantasy XV, etc. They had pretty glowing previews and people were pretty hyped for them. Weeks later, the hate comes flowing in.

The game look's gorgeous that's for sure! And what they have shown of basic combat and traversal looks fun.

That said I get the small impression of saminess as far as gameplay is concerned and a bit of randomness as far as world design goes (the bad kind like auto generated vs. distinct hand crafted areas) which I negatively associate with open world games. I hope it ends up a more focused experience than pure open world- from a personal preference stand point.

I'd really like to see how well the game handles skill progression and diversity of gameplay across the length of the entire game, maybe some big bosses and set pieces sprinkled in with adventury bits...

A good action game with skill/craft and mood whell selection to pretend it is rpg in very big hub shining because of range combat on dino (and budget for DA / attention to details)

i can't be disapointed.

Bad gameplay, Ubisoft collectahon type of missions/tail/tower etc, shallow characterization,
bad story(non sense ending).
Pretty graphics, okay animations, bad frame rate(on og ps4),

Those are things i expect.

Basically what I was going to write.
I'm sure I'll play it eventually, but I am not aboard the hype train on this game.

From the U.S. previews, the frame rate on the OG has been a pretty damn stable 30. Not touching the other stuff since it's subjective, and I vehemently disagree.

I just want the graphics to melt my face, for me to be able to do things in the open world, and for the combat to be slick and challenging. If that then a 9/10 from me with a good story.

I think it's going to be awesome. It looks amazing, has robot dinosaurs and the gameplay / combat ect looks solid.

People keep saying its copying Far Cry or something else, most games borrow ideas these days and it doesn't stop them being great, so I'm not bothered by the fact it borrows elements from other games, it's not like the game is a straight up clone, it's doing it's own thing too.

I expect it to be at least good, hoping for greatness. If the story/characters and atmosphere end up sucking then nothing else in the game will save the game for me personally. It needs to hit proper story beats in order to get me to care because I am well over the open world honeymoon. So yeah no pre-ordering (well I don't pre-order anything).

Keeping it low. Not that I'm comparing Horizon to The Order but Gaf also hyped that game to the moon, people compared the devs favorably to Naughty Dog, it appeared on most anticipated list for 2014 and 2015 and the game suffered FAR worse then it would have. Still would have been a terrible game but the faults were more glaring. I really really don't want Horizon to have that fate, there is definitely a lot more going for Horizon but still my expectations are tempered.

I think they do. I'm not generally a fan of the Sony 1st party stuff, especially the games that are shat out by their western studios. Lots of people are though, for some reason.

Out of all the open world games I've seen, this seems to have to most interesting looking gameplay.
Visual presentation is also top notch.
Now it depends on the quests and the story whether this game is great or just good.

Not sure what the hell that one dude is smoking, but typically out of the main three it is NINTENDO by far that gets free passes on each and every major game for the most part.

Sony exclusives are almost always put through the wringer in some way.

Oh please, Sony first party stuff is quality, it drives the industry forward every time a major new releases comes out. Opinions can be awful.

This is the exact hyperbole that I mean when I say Sony 1st party games are praised too much.
