After Chrono Trigger, what is the SNES' next best RPG?

Earthbound isn't even top 10 jrpg on the snes, it's not even that good of a game its the 16 bit version of style over substance since the actual gameplay is bad and the game has awful pacing.

After Chrono Trigger the next best JRPG is Final Fantasy VI then Terranigma.

Terranigma is better than Chrono Trigger!

My SNES Top 5 JRPG

1) Terranigma
2) Chrono Trigger
3) Dragon Quest V
4) Final Fantasy VI
5) Earthbound
6) Super Mario RPG
7) Tactics Ogre
8) Seiken Densetsu 3
9) Live a live
10) Lufia 2

Did Terranigma not come out in the US?

How have I never heard of it?

I didn't think so, I think it was Japan and Europe only. It's definitely worth a playthrough, even today.

Chrono Trigger specifically aside, my picks have all been mentioned - FFVI, Earthbound, Terranigma, Lufia 2. All great games with very different experiences. And that's not even getting into the next tier of "amazing but not as good as the others".

Secret of Mana. Game is like a fine wine. Others will say FF6. They might be right.
I don't think so.Amazing OST, still beatiful colorful graphics but gameplay is weak and very buggy.
The novel factor at the time of a coop multiplayer RPG on console is now unimpressive.
The sequel on Super Famicom (Seiken Densetsu 3) and Quintet action RPGs are much better.

probably seiken 3 and then chrono trigger as second?

earthbound, and all the final fantasies have incredible game balance problems where they bounce between you instantly being 1shot by enemies to being absurdly overpowered and being able to do everything brainless like mashing attack to get through the entire game?

and earthbound has extreme grinding problems that really extend the length of a game with an absurd amount of charm. The game's pacing is absolutely destroyed by long walks, bad dragon warrior death mechanics, and the aforementioned grinding.

Chrono Trigger has an incredibly well managed difficulty curve, makes random fights completely optional for challenge runs instead of an arduous process of despawning or holding down l/r and watching screen transitions

And the Mana series standout star is SD3.

It's impossible for me to chose. There were so many epic RPG's on the SNES that I feel were equal.

Now adventure? After Link to the Past, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja.

Earthbound still holds up.
I haven't replayed Soul Blazer since the SNES days so I am not sure if it holds up but I really liked it back then. Anyone replayed it recently? Is it just average?
It's still good.
Quick and addictive gameplay (to tie the overworld unlock system to the dungeon crawling was a genius stroke), ace soundtrack by Koshiro and some more mature (for the time) themes.

Terrqnigma is great, but for some reason I haven't finished it.

Seiken Desentsu 3 is another one.

And I can't like FFIV more than CT, since I played the former first and I have a burning hatred for random encounters.

I dont understand GAFs love of Earthbound. I played it last year, guess you had to be there...

Had to be there? Very few people played it when it first came out, the game started to gain traction after Super Smash Bros and I would say most people (like myself) played it when it came to Wii U Virtual Console, it was on the top of the eShops charts for a long time.

I loved playing it on Virtual Console so much that I now have a physical cartridge.

Tales of Phantasia is better than FFVI and Chrono Trigger.

Holy crap I totally forgot about tales! I loved that game so much... The music, battle system, It was amazing.

My rank goes Chrono Trigger> Tales of Phantasia> FFVI> Mario RPG> Earthbound.

Few people know this game because it's a Japanese exclusive and only has a fanmade translation for emulators.
It's easily top 3.

I hate the mother/earthbound series for their gameplay but bought both on the eshop and will buy mother 3 to support it for its insane creativity and to prove weird shit like this sells in the west so the better quirky games get localized. I haven't played mother 3 for the record just beginnings and earthbound.

Ya, it was very lonely being an Earthbound fan before Smash. It didn't review well when it first came out, either.

The game got a whole second life when Smash 64 released and people were like "who is this kid with the baseball bat?".

Threads like this never work out, because it started already bad with the OP. He should have named the thread: your favorite rpg on the Snes. Then the vibe would be different. Because at is now, everyone is naming their favorite game that is better than Chrono Trigger for the Snes, because opinions are subjective.

Unless the favorite rpg on Snes is CT by some of the Neogaffers, then they would agree with OP.

Which Secret of Mana are people putting against Chrono Trigger?

Seiken Densetsu 2 or Seiken Densetsu 3?

You can make an argument that CT beats in some area Seiken Densetsu 2 but Seiken Densetsu 3?

I don't think so...

The fact that the screen didn't center on the protag and you basically had to push the edges of the screen to get anywhere made this game incredibly obnoxious to play, on a fundamental level. Like, we'd figured out how to do top-down views in games at this point, I don't know why this game missed the memo.

Yeah I'd say I FFV is my favorite SNES rpg by quite a bit.

Fun, enjoyable, yet memorable story mixed with basically infinite replay value. It's also one of the only games in the series to actually feel like an rpg, in the more classical sense of the word, due to the way character building works vs ffiv and vi.

Gameplay and camera was epic at the time... never had any issue.

To be fair I find more modern games having more issues than SoM.

It was a pleasure to play it.

never particularly "noticed' this but it probably has to do with taking on one mob of enemies at a time per hardware limitations

game is a buggy, glitchy mess though, despite being a masterpiece.

I probably beat it over 10 times and I never see bugs or glitches playing it... are you sure we are talking about the same game???

My brothers and cousin played with me everything too... they don't like games at all but SoM even my brothers finished it.

PS. I never finished the sequel (SD3) because aí found it a hell inferior.

yeah... game is glitch city. go back and play it on single player, try boss battles without spell spamming. it's sort of unplayable

i never noticed it as a kid or just shrugged off some things but revisiting it it was pretty obvious they ran into trouble converting it from a CD game to cart, or just took a halfassed approach or whatever

I beat the game without using spells (used only to cure)... you just need to charge attack to deal boss damage (it even do way more damage than spells)... you need swift some weapon to reach some bosses too. It is part of the gameplay.

I don't understand what are you talking here. What was glitches or bugged to you???

CD to cart???

I'm guessing it's because the game allowed two people to be playing at the same time.

gameplay wise the AI pathing is terrible, some inputs delay or won't register (even if you aren't spamming). just general eccentricities about the programming are jank

go back and give the game a whirl. you'll notice it i promise

You need to time you attack and enemies can cancel your attack... if you try to hit the button when the enemy already started attack you will miss your command because your command will be cancelled. To avoid cancels use charged attacks and profit because it is hard to cancel.

You have an attack bar too and you can't spam attack... you need at least 1% to make another attack... if you wait 100% you will have the complete attack... you can charge up to 800%.

The party UI become buggy if you try to move far from them... so it instead to deal with enemies start to try to run to you and enemies crush them... give space for your partner AI and it will manage pretty well the enemies.

It was way ahead of time when released and that is why it is a masterpiece.

I played the game again in 2007 or 2008 and I had no issue... it was how it always played.

I think FF IV is better than VI. Sometimes less is more.
While I'll agree that FF4 is a great game it is no where close to FF6. The story is rather simple and too linear outside of the few side quests. I understand FF6 is very large, but it really gets the world is in peril feel, which I felt was missing from 4. I never really felt Golbez was a threat and the campy we'll channel good feels to rez the party to defeat the final boss was just an eyeroll moment IMO.

On topic, Shadowrun and Secret of Evermore are great and underrated games.

Let me dispute this, Lufia 2 has way better dungeon design and is the best SNES RPG. After that, Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger are in a hard fight, where I would still prefer SMRPG, which imo plays a bit better, whereas Chrono Trigger looks nicer. So the first game after Chrono Trigger, which actually imo is number three, is Final Fantasy VI.
