After Chrono Trigger, what is the SNES' next best RPG?

I would say surpassing it is FFVI or FFV. Also Earthbound is my favourite game ever so it's up there, and SMRPG is close behind.

Secret of Mana. Game is like a fine wine. Others will say FF6.

Abolutely right! I played through it lately in coop-mode! It is still a bliss!!!

FF VI is another great one, I think it is harder to pick up and play though and you can lose interst more easily.

The SNES-era was the golden age for JRPGs, hands down!

I also liked the Breath Of Fire games.

I like FFVI better

I like DQV better, too, but having to read japanese or fanpatch limits the appeal in the US

Chrono is definitely third though, beating Super Mario RPG by a decent margin

The undisputed first place aside, which other SNES RPG is worthy of playing even in 2017, and why?

I can't speak and other RPGs on SNES, but I played Chrono Trigger for the first time last year and I was amazed how good it is. I believe back in 2013 or 2014, I played Earthbound and that's really good as well, but a little more challenging in terms of knowing where to go compared to Chrono Trigger. With that being said, I guess I need to try out the SNES Final Fantasy games and other games mentioned such as Terrigama.

My top ten SNES RPGs is a so close of a contest that I don't really dare to list them in any order, as I'm prone to change my mind on positions pretty often:

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG
Earthbound
Breath of Fire II
Final Fantasy IV
Lufia II
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma

Runner-ups: Final Fantasy V, Secret of Evermore, Tales of Phantasia, Seiken Densetsu 3, Ogre Battle, Star Ocean. Also, man, 94 and 95 were such beastly years if you were an RPG fan.

I dont understand GAFs love of Earthbound. I played it last year, guess you had to be there...

You're not the only one. I find it to be a very average game, the fanbase for the series is incredibly irritating though.

I think that Chrono Trigger is an amazing RPG OP, though I feel like SMRPG is more fun to play personally.

I found 3 way to inferior to 2... that not means it bad... it is a good game but the second game (SoM) is better.
Same here. Having encounters in SD3 locked into battles with set groups felt restricting to me. Not to mention I found the connection of hits to feel far more sluggish in 3. SD2's combat just felt snappier to me overall.

Shadowrun was gud.

Chrono trigger is simply....how you kids say it know and days? GOAT!

it will always be in everyones top 5 list of RPGs ever, right along ff7. It is what it is.

This is what we call a loaded question.

I reject the premise entirely and proclaim Earthbound and Final Fantasy VI to both be ranked above Chrono Trigger.

Ff7 doesn't even make my top 50 list of greatest rpgs ever.

CT at least makes the top ten.

Chrono Trigger > Final Fantasy VI > Final Fantasy V > EarthBound, in my opinion.

CT has amazing replay value, arguably some of, if not the best pacing in the genre, and doesn't overstay it's welcome. About the only complaint I can really hold against it is that it's a little on the easy side and that it's easily broken with a bit of grinding, but that can honestly be levied against FFVI too.

I think it's just overall the most consistently quality RPG on the SNES

Chrono Trigger is most certainly not the undisputed champion of the SNES' vast JRPG library. Both Terranigma and Final Fantasy VI trump it overall, to say nothing of other 16-bit JRPGs released at the time or tactical RPGs like Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together and Fire Emblem: Seisen No Keifu.

I don't consider Chrono Trigger to be the best, sorry. But, really, it's all opinion.

There is a large number of amazing snes rpgs though, and some very very good hidden gems that are worth checking out even today. Such as

If you've never played this, and are a fan of snes rpgs, go do so. (And its prequels)

How is the fanbase irritating? I've never heard that. It's got the nicest fan base.

Earthbound has such a unique sense of humor, a unique setting, a massive amount of variety in locations, neat gameplay innovations (Such as being able to squash easy enemies and a rolling HP meter which adds a level of excitement to battles), a ton of charm and heart, great music. Everything is oozing with care and effort. You could tell it was really special to the people that made it.

Now Super Mario RPG I never understood the love for. It's kind of cool to explore in Mario's world and it was fun to time attacks in battle. But the SNES offered so many epic emotional heartfelt adventures. Super Mario RPG just seemed alright and a little empty in comparison to those. A fun short rental while you're waiting for the big RPG releases to come out.

Final Fantasy VI. I'd put it above Chrono Trigger myself. Earthbound is up there too, and in reality probably had more effect on me than any other RPG on the SNES.

In no universe is Terranigma actually the best RPG on the SNES, stop trying to be gaming hipsters. It's one of the best SNES games that no one ever played, but let's not be ridiculous here.
