(EU? Norway?) NES Classic Mini reaching EOL - production ceasing

What, you weren't spamming a stock checker to beat scalpers? TOO BAD!

(Yeah, it's SHIT)

Actually before Xmas I was! Then I went out to the shop one morning and came home to find an email saying they were in stock at nintendo.co.uk for less than a minute...

My interest waned. Nintendo could have had huge success with an entire line of mini classic machines, but nope. They're completely useless.

Yep, I just missed today's Tesco ones too because I had the cheek to go out to lunch. What a joke. Nintendo have lost a lot of my faith over this.

I still can't buy one in Australia. It feels like we get restocked 1 a month and they sell out within minutes. It's fucking bullshit.

I have been trying to find one since launch and still haven't. I'm almost at the point where I don't care anymore.

What makes you think it was sold at a loss?

Not being snarky. Just curious.

There is no other logical explanation for why they have to discontinue a seemingly successful product. Console manufacturers can sell their newest hardware at a loss because they will profit from the games, but that wouldn't have been the case with the NES Classic.

Actually I lie, there is another explanation that might be more likely. Nintendo thinks the market for this device is already near saturation, despite the seeming hype on the internet, and they don't want to run the risk of contracting for more units to be built that might end up sitting on the shelves.

I just got my NES Classic this past weekend (BestBuy.com had them in stock for a hot minute earlier in the week) and now I need a 2nd controller.

I just ordered this one on Amazon: Otrz Controller w/Turbo

Does anyone else have that and would you vouch for it? Or is it trash? Best Buy has one from Insignia but there's no Turbo and its black/white and everything about it screams low quality, so I splurged on the Ortz and am hoping for the best.

I don't do pre-orders, and a company of Nintendo's size has no excuse for cocking this up.

Well, OK, but if you don't pre-order something that was always likely to be very popular, then I think you lose your right to complain somewhat. It doesn't cost anything to pre-order so why not do it?

Consider this:

IF this is true &

IF this was the plan all along

Nintendo have been lying to us for MONTHS.

You could just go with a Wii Classic Controller. I'd rather a Nintendo branded controller over a no name.

Ok so current conspiracy theories:

  • Nintendo doesn't want to devalue ROMs prior to Switch VC launch
  • Nintendo is re-engineering a less hackable version to prevent the thing from being modified
  • Related to above, Nintendo is re-engineering a better version (longer controller cable lol) with more games, thus obsoleting this version.
  • Nintendo hates money, didn't plan for the device's success and didn't secure manufacturing past x date.

I'd believe any of the above (except Nintendo hates money). It's a shame scalpers get the win from this. I'm not too bummed personally but I feel for anyone looking for one.

Wrote to Nintendo of Germany and Nintendo of Italy (since they have working emails) out of curiosity. Don't read too much into it as it's just customer support but either way...:
NoI wrote me back fairly quickly:

Nintendo of Italy said:
The Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System isn't a limited edition. We know that it is hard to find the product, however, due to the big success among the public, Nintendo of Italy has planned to order more of it. Unfortunately we cannot give you more detailed info on when it should be available again.

Gotta kill it off just in time for the Switch VC, so people will buy those same 30 games for like $5 a pop.

In all seriousness, this is a baffling/disappointing decision. I didn't particularly want one myself, but it sucks hard for people who did, and couldn't due to stuck shortages and God damn scalpers.

I pretty much gave up after xmas. Was like a perfect xmas present. I wanted to buy one for all the employees at the office and one for my kids to re-experience getting a NES on xmas morning.

THANKS NINTENDO.

How in the age of foxcon/ global manufacturing can you produce so little of something?

I think that If I don't pre-order I lose my right to complain if I don't get one at launch day. Maybe. But that was four months ago, they've never replenished stock to anywhere near a level to meet demand, and now they're ceasing production.

And if it was likely to be popular, Nintendo should have made more. This isn't the first time they've pulled this bullshit.

That's fair I suppose.

Back when the thing was announced I tried to pre-order. I even signed up for Amazon's preorder notification, but they never notified me....so I didn't get to preorder. I would have if anyone let me

Kinda happy about this. I wanted to get one for my brother and ended up getting 3 of the pre orders I made.

Might just sit on the two classics I still have, I was tempted to use one. But unopened would surely get better money in a few months if this really is the end of them

That's encouraging to hear.

Yeah, but what about that sweet, sweet confirmation bias? Nintendo obviously just created these to increase awareness for Pokémon Go, of course they aren't going to be making anymore. That's what my local Nintendo rep told me, too, so it's definitely true, you guys.

That sounds like a real bummer for anyone that had been looking for one, if it's true.

I originally wanted one, however the stock was so low that I ended up like lots of other folks. My interest in it wasn't high enough to hunt, or pay scalper prices, however I did keep my eyes open when I was out and about.

Seems like a pretty weird move if it's true, and I'm sure they have their reasons. Either way, they just keep on lowering the integrity of their brand to me. I've pre-ordered BotW for WiiU since I'm not sold on a Switch (not sure I could even reserve one at this point). I've got an XB1 at the same TV where my WiiU is busy collecting dust. I still play my 3DS pretty often, since (to be fair) it has a great library, but that's it.

My 7 y/o would rather play Minecraft and Terraria on the X1.

I got one directly from the Nintendo store. I don't think I jumped on it immediately but I can't really remember. Came two days early and with a free NES controller key-ring :O

Maybe I got lucky.

This appears to be an old story. Here's almost the exact same report from a month ago.

Here is the website that person used the email referenced in the OP here as verification over in that Reddit thread, this store said they would never be receiving any more and pulled their page....except:

Myth busted?

They need the Switch to succeed. They can't have people buying other Nintendo consoles. It's why the WiiU got yanked. It won't be long before they pull the 3DS also.

The Wii U got yanked because it was a money pit. Legacy consoles are a great idea to have on shelves if they are successful, as you target low-end and casual consumers while the day one big money spenders get the new hardware. There is apple, who generally yank old hw because they want to maintain their image as a premium brand, but no other company in the tech space has that kind of clout at the moment.

There are multiple reports from GAF posters that have corroborated the information.

Are you kidding me? I really wanted one—not to scalp, but because I'm a fan. Way to curry favor with your longtime fans, Nintendo. The same fanbase that'll carry your Switch console into the fall.

Dicks.

I think discontinuing it makes perfect sense right now.

It was very useful for keeping the Nintendo name under flashlights during Christmas, yet now it is better for them to remove the thing from the market and save shelf space (which costs A LOT) for Switch.

Most probably they earned not-so-much money with the Nintendo Mini:consider it as some kind of prestige operation.

Now it's Switch time.

This is fuel to my theory, that the NES Mini was purely created by the Nintendo management to have nice Numbers for the xmas season and nothing else.

I would be shocked if this wasn't the case. Virtual Console will be on the Switch and I'm sure Nintendo wants people buying that instead.
