The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Preview Thread

With respect to the edge summary, I find some tension in the comparison to OOT. In my opinion, OOT, like most 3D Zelda games, has some good things in it -- But it was a paradigm shift in the wrong direction, and started Zelda down an unfortunate path away from imagination and discovery and exploration and adventure. The exciting thing about BOTW is the idea that it's righting the ship and putting those things back into the series. Because of this, I find some irony in the comparison to OOT.

What do they say in their conclusion?

here

Conclusion to Edge review posted in other thread, no spoilers
Boy Wander said:
Good God the conclusion of EDGEs review:

" The result, for all the longevity of its series and the familiarity of the open world genre, is a game that evokes feelings we haven't felt for 20 years. Not since Ocarina of Time have we set foot in a world that feels so mind-bogglingly vast and unerringly magical, that proves so relentlessly intriguing. Plenty of games promise to let us go anywhere and do anything. Few, if any, ever deliver so irresistibly. 19 years on Ocarina is still held up as the high water mark of gamings best loved and greatest series. Now it may have to settle for second place".

Breath of the Wild |OT| You See That Mountain? You Can Go There. You Can Also Climb On It With Enough Stamina But Be Careful Because You Don't Want To Freeze To Death When You Get Up There Might Want To Put Some Warmer Clothes On Or Cook A Nice Meal. Oh And Be Careful Climbing When It's Raining You Don't Want To Slip. Ok Good Luck.

Is there any good footage of gameplay from a denser forest? I remember seeing some in trailers and such, but nothing really in the previews.

I doubt they are allowed to show the dense forest right now. But I saw one on a picture (of the worldmap) which is as big as the great plateau.

If this open world is truly as good as they are saying, i really really hope developers like Bethesda Game Studios and even also CD Projekt RED look at this and take inspiration from it for their future RPGs.

I hope Nintendo would devote the same time and resources to a Metroid games as they do to zelda and mario. Heck botw engine could be perfect for metroid game.

As far as 2D Metroid games go, I don't think they really need to have such a large scale and money thrown into it like BOTW. Just use a moderate budget, get together a competent team that has some actual passion for 2D Metroids, and go crazy from there. Just make Super Metroid on steroids.

I'd like to see another Prime game too, though. Still wondering what Retro's up to.

Fair point though. Prerelease hype doesn't automatically mean we're getting a game better than OoT.

oh it's just humorous to me

although I am a SS truther. plus that game was lowkey revolutionary at the time with its wiimotion+ controls in regards to combat. a lot of people like to forget that now that it's in the rear view.

It doesn't, but I am curious as to if their Skyward Sword review had a similar sentiment in it.

Could just be prerelease hype, but maybe they are sincere in believing this might become more well loved.

well I'm already seeing people bring up SS's review scores in an effort to downplay Breath of the Wild

what a time

Without having any context on the review, a 10/10 is the same as a 10/10. Don't worry though, any sane person will know how different this is from SS.

The problem is that if you're literally just describing Breath of the Wild then yeah, no game has done exactly that. But you can point to a few games that do a lot of the same stuff, and additionally do stuff Breath of the Wild doesn't. You can point to the systemic nature of Far Cry games. You can point to Oblivion, Skyrim, or the modern Fallout games.

The way some people describe Breath of the Wild you'd think that the aforementioned games didn't exist. That isn't to say that Breath of the Wild doesn't do great things, but it didn't invent a lot of these great things - it's just combining them in what seems to be a really effective way, but many good games do that.

Because to me and many others the zelda formula is the best in gaming. Very few games attempt anything like a zelda dungeon, or trying to mix puzzles with all sorts of gameplay changing items. Most games are content with a few gameplay systems and a neat story and that's it and generally ignore hand crafted level design. No location in either, skyrim, fallout, far cry is as intricately designed as a zelda dungeon. And that mix is the magic I have been waiting for. It's not that those games don't have some of those elements, it's that this mix has never been done before.

I'm getting the Wii U version, and i wish we got to see more of it so we can see how it holds up against the Switch version. Does Edge say anything about how it looks on Wii U? It's 720p, right? If i recall correctly Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 are 720p too and they look fine on my TV. So it should be ok.

Question: did Nintendo add this trick after E3?

Because I remember this is one of the most asked question after the show, and I remember seeing a person trying to hop on a loaded boulder. The boulder would launch, but Link got damaged and fell before the boulder went very far. Might be misremembering things.

Edge mentions frame rate drops in the Wii U version.

Yeah I'm very curious about Wii U visual impressions, somehow 720p Wii U games actually look freaking fantastic on my 65" 4K set.

I love the controls of SS, just didn't think the rest of the game was any good.

Fwiw I'm as on board for BotW as I've ever been for an open world game.

Really? Oh that makes me very happy to hear. Personally I own a 55 inch OLED, sadly no 4K though. It should be fine then. The only visual thing that could stand out is some bad aliasing, if that's the case.

When I'm playing this, I think I'll just go on a lengthy treasure hunt when I get the freedom to do so. That's what I try to do in some open-world games anyway, like TW3.
