Nintendo Switch Uses Friend Codes To Add Friends as primary method, others detailed

I'm really confused as to why it wasn't already the default solution when the Wii U had this day one. Is this like, a DeNA thing? Because of how friend codes are a prominent concept in Japanese mobile games?

IMO they're likely waiting for the launch of full online/app to have everythign ready and running fully.

That makes a bit of sense, most mobile games use a system very similar to the Friend Code. I wonder if it has something to do with japanese usernames almost always being written with roman letters as opposed to japanese characters

And hence, it flopped. Nintendo 3DS and Wii U both sold less than Wii and DS, Nintendo analysed the differences and found out the only reason for Wii's / DS's better performance have to be friend codes.

But the 3DS uses friend codes..........

You have got to be kidding me.

THE WII U DOESN'T USE FRIEND CODES

Sounds like an alright solution until they can get the social network link up and running. But man, they really should have been clear about this far before the Switch launches.

Absolutely. There's no reason we should be scrambling for answers regarding ADDING FRIENDS TO OUR FRIENDS LIST the day before release. Come on Nintendo.

Ok? So instead of dealing with that, Nintendo gives everyone an impossible to remember 12 digit code?

Please explain how that is a better system.

Nobody said it was better. More convoluted even. But it's also not that different.

And there's no expectation that you memorize the friend code. You can add people from existing social networks that are tied to the Nintendo Account or you can add people you've recently played with.

The friend code is the final option to add someone that you have no other social connection to beyond the Nintendo Account system.

Several methods can be used to add friends as quickly and easily as possible: · By linking Nintendo Switch to your Nintendo Account, your friends from Miitomo and Super Mario Run will appear as friend candidates so you can easily send them a friend request. Also, we are planning it so that friends from social networking services will be listed as candidates, too.

In the future, you will be able to send a friend request to friends associated with your NNID (Wii U/Miiverse) and Nintendo 3DS.

In some games you will be able to use an in-game interface to send friend requests.

You can send friend requests to those who have played with you recently.

You can establish a friend through local wireless communication.

You can also send a friend request by using a friend code.

So I can boot up my wiiU.

Do a search for someone's username and add them.

And them go to my switch and have them show up for me to add them.

As someone who has a switch, its clear that they didnt have time to fully flesh out the ui. It all works and is quite fast but it's very basic right now. The eshop is literally three tab (new releases, upcoming and redeem codes) and search

NNID will be available?

Pfft. All that for nothing.

It won't be though. You'll be able to add people you already have added on Wii U. But if you don't have a Wii U or don't already have that person added on Wii U, you're shit out of luck.

Or you can send them your friend code then accept their friend request.

So at least they are sorting this in the future? That's a relief.

All in all doesn't surprise me as the "Rushed to market to meet fiscal year end" seems so obvious.

yeah, it's incredibly transparent why this launched juuuust before April 1. at least we know things like improved online, friend searching, cloud saving, etc are all on the way.

So Miitomo and SMR friends appear as candidates.
As do Facebook and twitter friends.

That's good.. but..

What about Fire Emblem Heroes friends?
What about WiiU and 3DS friends?

Why can't there be a single unified Nintendo Friend list.... such a simple solution

At least we now know why things like Netflix etc aren't there at launch -- they literally are still working on the core of the OS

Facebook and Twitter friends aren't even possible as of now. But will be added later alongside Wii U and 3DS friends eventually.

Yeah sure sounds cleaner. o_O

Blink twice if Nintendo is holding your family hostage.

I mean, it is how the system works.

I could either complain about it, or just do something to make it easier. So I write it down to make it easier. It may not be as easy as other systems, but if I want to make use of it, I gotta adapt. Obviously people complaining about it to Nintendo hasn't changed how Nintendo wants to do things.

I mean, sure, it's an option (and why not the user id we just set up?). But you can also add friends with the following methods:

Are friends with them in Mario Run
Are friends with them in Fire Emblem Heroes
Are friends with them in Miitomo
Both have My Nintendo linked to Twitter
Both have My Nintendo linked to Facebook
Are in the same room

To say it's the "main method" is odd, because I will be adding about 15 friends, none of which will need to use a friend code to do so.

And remember, gamers on mobile phones are used to the friend code method. Basically every gacha game uses them.

This is exactly why I have a hard time respecting all things Nintendo.

Yes, we couldn't have the Switch launching without finding something petty to hone in on and freak out over! Nintendo is the worst! I can't wait for them to fail and go third party. Because after this, they certainly deserve it!

Hopefully you should only have to search and add them once from any source and they're your friend no matter which console you later log onto, like other systems' friends lists work.

Reminder that you could add people to your friends list on Xbox Live by username in 2002. 15 years ago.

The update to that Polygon story doesn't fix this because people already have to be your friend on previous platforms, including one that ALSO used Friend Codes.

The Switch REALLY made me want to give Nintendo a chance, but they are bungling so much with this launch...

PLS update OP! over 10 pages of people overreacting smh

Yeah... Nintendo really should have just given us a quick 5-minute video that went through all the options available in the OS. It would have done wonders here.

At the same time, I do put some blame on media outlets for jumping on this as soon as possible. The story of "SWITCH USES FRIEND CODES" was a headline for every major site and it seemed like very few (if any) writers wanted to dive into the other options.

This is embarrassing and enough to put me off from buying a Switch as quickly as I wanted to and I'm a Wii U owner.

There is seriously no excuse for this crap. Their response is not good enough

This seems even worse. Nintendo get your shit together.

I got a friend request from someone via friend code and it offers no details beyond their (non-unique) nickname and icon. Seems kinda bad?

Hmm. I'll probably have to change my display name from "Nick" to "Inferno313" just so you guys know who I am, haha.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
... They're adding more ways to add a friend after launch?

This might be the most rushed-to-market major console release I've ever seen.
You really are reaching here... We knew that the full online system would be ready for launch. And what mayor platform launched with every service and QoL updates being there day 1?

Why specifically NNID...?

Like so we'll be able to search old Wii U accounts but not Switch/Nintendo Account IDs...?

Why does it have to be this difficult? I'm appalled after the fairly functional Wii U friend system that they're making this so convoluted...
