SD Card and USB C Cord Suggestions for Switch

I urgently need a USB C charger recommendation 'cause the one that comes with the system is probably never leaving my dock.

Don't know if this has been posted but if not.....I tried charging the switch using the USB-C to USB-A cable that came with the pro controller with an iPad charger and it worked very well. Pretty quick charging in sleep mode and slower but consistent charging while playing.

There are power banks, wall chargers, and other power delivery devices with USB-C ports, which is ideally where we are heading to. A to C are more meant to be stop-gap solutions.
Although it will be always handy to have at least one cable like that, because USB-A ports will exist for a looooooooooooooong-ass time.

You should definitely get devices with USB-C out. You should also check to make sure they can handle the voltage.

So in the above case I probably should swap to that other power bank that has a USB-C output and grab a USB-C to USB-C PowerLine cable for it then?

I would advise you so, it's way more future proof.

Although, some people have been running into some issues related to USB-C's bidirectional power where the devices are transferring power the other way around to the intended one, haha. Growing pains I guess. I don't know how to ensure that they do what's intended. Hope someone can chime in.

Looks like someone mentions that in the comments section of that page, saying you just have to power on the bank first before you plug in. If you plug the device in before powering on the bank, power flows in the other direction.

Can someone please confirm a 15V USB wall charger is all I need if I have a USB C cable?

EDIT: More I read, sounds like amperage is more important than volts. Also possible to fry with too much amps

Put a 64 GB card in mine for $15.

Has anybody tested PC USB-C chargers? The only part I worry about is the charger giving too much juice and frying the Switch.

Using an older portable charger from Cheero (Ingress branded one with lights) with a USB-A output of 5V/2.1a and an iOrange USB-C to USB-A LED cable, I can confirm it charges the switch.

However, this is only with the system idle (screen on, waiting for a game to finish downloading).

I will test further once said game is finished and see if it can actually charge while in use.

What disappoints me is that something like this doesn't work:

It would make for very nice travelling docks. Cheap(er) and portable. C'mon Nintendo.

It's one thing that I actually hope someone breaks the protection of.

So based on your recommendations , getting a decent charger with a USB c out and a cable USB c is almost the price of the original Nintendo charger, so why not get one that will not fry the switch for sure ?

More flexible.

You can change the cable length without having to buy another brick. You can break the cable without having to buy another brick. You can use the cable on another brick or from a powerbank for example.

These things are not supposed to fry your console. Always check for reviews and quality brands (like Anker) and you'll be golden.

Given the effort Nintendo put in the paint coating, plastic screen, dock clearance and wifi performance, I'd say you are likely safer with any reputable third party charger. I wouldn't be surprised if the official charger is the cheapest piece of junk they were able to source in the market.

Can you link a good wall charger with USB c output and a good USB c cable that is around 30 bucks, the same price of the official charger ? I am lost at Amazon

Nah. Nintendo are not particularly renowned for creating hazards. There are areas where they cheap out like fit and finish and hardware performance, there are other areas where they excel like sturdiness, safety and reliability.

HDMI output doesn't work on those things. Correct?

Do those things at least charge the Switch?

Does the usb to ethernet adapter work through those adapters?

Does anypart of that adapter work on the Switch?

Oh I'm not so well versed in prices, just was pointing out why it can be better to have the cable and brick separately even if it's nearly the same price.

Cheaper (on sale) and it includes brick and (admittedly short) cable. I'm not sure about compatibility.

For now I've only invested in a few Anker USB-A to USB-C cables (and have a charger like this on my bedside which I hope charges the Switch).

By all means the Nintendo charger is also a valid option. You'll know it works and it can also replace your dock charger if you ever have to change it.

Powerbank. 20000 mAh or more. Though there's some restriction for anything above 200000.

I purchased one and unless it's defective (unlikely, it charges everything else), it's not charging anything Switch related - the console, the pro controller, or the charging grip - no matter what cable I use (Nintendo, Orange, etc.).

Damn it. Did you try charging other stuff? If it does, than it is working , the switch does not recognize this.

Ok, I went back with another iOrange cable to thoroughly test this yet again.

With the Anker PowerPort 2 and an iOrange-E C to USB cable:

The Switch console will charge
The Pro Controller will not charge
The Charging grip will not provide power

BTW, the charging grip is the biggest rip-off ever. Don't buy it. Why there isn't a battery in that to charge the controllers from is beyond me.

I completely agree and yet I'm keeping mine. I accept that I'm paying stupid money to make things more convenient for me since I want to leave a set of JoyCons attached to the system and another set in the Charging Grip. At least I got it discounted with Visa Checkout but I totally agree that this thing should have been in the box and standard, not a separate accessory.

I'm using Samsung's fast charger that draws 9V with the cable that came with the Pro controller as a way to charge off the dock. This method will be okay without damaging the device, right? I was using it while playing Zelda and while it was in sleep, it seemed to work really well.

There is a lot of confusion in this thread where people assume that the Switch battery can do fast charging using USB PD because the Switch uses USB-C and USB-C can support fast charging. A lot of people don't realize that the 39W mode for the AC adapter is only for the dock and doesn't charge the Switch faster in portable mode.

If the Switch supported fast charging then some USB A to C cords would be slower than some USB-C to C cords.


I am holding an official Nintendo Switch AC adapter in my hands right now. The two modes it lists are 39W (15v @ 2.6A) and 7.5W (5v @ 1.5A). Most of the USB-A port power banks listed in this thread are way more than 7.5W.


7.5W is needed to charge while playing in portable mode. The 39W mode is only used in dock mode. The Switch is released and people are still sticking to their fanfic theories from before launch.

Can you translate do this poor ignorant soul ? I have a samsung charger 5v 2.4 and another 5v 2.0. can I just buy a USB a/USB c cable and charge the switch safely on portable mode then ?

Anker stopped responding to my messages when I pointed out their most recent errors. I am still waiting to hear back regarding my last round of concerns.
I have real doubts Anker knows what they are doing in the USB-C space. They are freewheeling on reputation alone. The facts contradict their claims of expertise.
I strongly suggest fact-checking them. I just blew $80 on two noncompliant, brand-new, wall warts Anker released. We-just-finished-explaining-the-problems-they-are-causing recent. Both are bad, in very specific, but different ways.
I've published my findings on Plus, since these aren't just bad Engineering Samples -- these are things they are selling users on Amazon right now.

Super short tl;dr version would basically be that the Switch doesn't need as much power as speculated. 5V/2A sounds like it works iirc so you should be fine.

Maybe down the line things will be adopting usb-pd more but right now you can't even buy the reddit recommended models in Canada nor will Amazon USA ship them across the border.

I've been ok with the RavPower 20100 QC3 USB-C model, but it would have been nice to be able to get the more compatible ones that support the 15v 0.5A range.
