SD Card and USB C Cord Suggestions for Switch

You can charge and play using a USB-C to USB-A cable so not sure what that is about. I think there is some understandable confusion since there are so many different terms and ports being thrown around.

The short of it is if you are using a power source (battery brick or AC plug) that is outputting the appropriate power rating, with a cable also rated to carry that, then you won't have any issues.

If you are buying everything fresh you might as well go USB-C for everything and get the highest rated sources it supports. If you are trying to repurpose something you already have you will have to dig a bit more in the nitty-gritty to see if anything in the power chain will be a problem.

Edit: also worth pointing out that Reddit post, while having a lot of good info, was not the most... Uh.. scientific endeavor testing 4 units the dude had laying around (though still appreciate their effort.) I wouldn't be too quick to declare the recommended unit as 'the one to get' or whatever, but it seems like a perfectly good option.

I ordered Anker Premium 5-Port 60W USB Wall Charger PowerPort+ 5 USB-C for wall charger and Anker PowerCore+ 20100 USB-C power bank. I also bought a charge grip and pro controller, so I should be able to use the included USB-C cables. I'm pretty sure I should be fine, but some of the posts here are worrying me I may have made a bad choice.

You need to use the USB-C to USB-C cable for the Switch, since that is the port that has USB-PD.

The battery will very slowly charge the Switch while playing though, because it won't pull more that 2A even if the port can give more. Instead, the Switch increases the voltage to 15V to get more power using USB-PD.

Why wouldn't you just buy the official charger for $30 and pass on spending $40 on the wall charger and ~$10 for USB C cables?

The PowerPort+ 5 is fine for the Switch, but if you plug in anything that draws more than 30W too the USB-C port it'll give it even when it's not supposed to (it was giving my MacBook Pro 45W which is way out of line). I contacted Anker and they are requesting I send it back for testing

Cause the cable on the official power brick cannot be detached...? I went with the same setup and it's just to be future proofed. I can play docked, have a 10 foot cable to play while charging in the bedroom. Or use a 6foot to tether from the power bank while traveling.

The orange cable sucks. The jacket is incredibly stiff. It's like handling a coil of barbed wire without the barbs. The plug is super loose so it rugs itself right out of the switch just with the force of regular movement.

Just giving my feedback.

I bought from Amazon the same wall charger as you but different cable

Hopefully it works good. Will let you guys know tomorrow. And if that goes well I just need a new case, and... apparently, launch people REALLY like accessories because at least in my local Walmart in Miami, the shelves are empty.

Thanks, I ordered an iOrange usb-c to usb-c cable to utilize PD port.

I opted for the Anker wall charger because I was looking for a multi-purpose charger.

All of this seems way more complicated then a USB charger should be

I was looking at the anker 24w that several in this page posted about, but now I'm confused on if that will maintain charge or if it will just drain slower. Not to mention USB b to USB c or USB c to USB c cord.

Feel the same way. Looking for something to charge my switch on the go but confused about what works and doesn't. Lol

Here's the simple version:

USB C to USB C is better than USB A to USB C.
Every charger that does 2A output will charge the Switch slowly while playing.*
Every USB C charger will charge the Switch while playing.

* Excluding propriety charging methods that aren't compatible with the Switch like Qualcomm Quick Charge, etc., but even these will still charge the switch, just possibly slower.

Edit: Sorry, that was regarding power banks, but for wall plugs, the best solution is just getting additional Nintendo Switch ones.

Why wouldn't you just buy the official charger for $30 and pass on spending $40 on the wall charger and ~$10 for USB C cables?

Now that my screen protector has finally shipped I need to get serious about a travel case and charger.

$30 for the first party charger is starting to sound like the simplest and cheapest method. I'm confused as to what exactly is needed for optimal charging.

If you're looking to buy a power bank for the Switch and you haven't yet done so, make sure you buy one with USB-Power Delivery (USB PD).

you can buy something similar for less, like I posted above, and with a longer wire, but if money is not a problem, the Nintendo one is fine.

Yes, if you budget allows it, sure, go ahead and get one with USB PD, but as long as the powerbank has Usb C ports or even regular USB A, it will work fine, just the charging will be slower. The best option is PD, but the price is almost double in certain cases

Haven't really followed this lately, but are there any comparisons of the different SD cards and their real-life usages on Switch yet?

I got a 200GB microSD and the Switch only shows 183GB as free space

was I suppose to find a way to delete whatever bloat this crap came with or is that the way all microSDs are?

that is normal with any HD, micro Sd card, you never get the full advertised storage

Well, I mean, that isn't strictly true, but I agree I wish this stuff was better communicated/advertised.

200 GB = 186.265 GiB

It does look like a small portion is reserved but not very much overall.

Until the dock/scratch thing is resolved I just want to have it in TV mode but with an extension outside of the dock, is this possible?

You can take the dock apart and leave the front "plate" off. Someone posted some pics earlier in this thread.

For optimal the official one is probably the cheapest safe option too.

I opted for the official one. It's not as "portable" as other options such as Anker (at least, to fit in a carrying case) but I don't mind lugging it around if I have to travel. I'll eventually need to get a powerbank but it looks like there's a lot of good recommendations already mentioned.

What do you all think of this microsd card

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DYN4VPE/?tag=neogaf0e-20

or am I overpaying for this I havent ordered it yet

Also would need a LAN Adapter since the wifi in my bedroom is well, kind of crappy so was thinking about getting this

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011DDXGVC/?tag=neogaf0e-20

they have Type A and Type C not sure if one works compared to the other one

I'd say you're overpaying for that micro sd. I bought a Silicon Power 128 UHS-1 card for $37. Tested it with a speed tester and got 75 read and 16 write.

I might be able to get it lower through amazon will have to see..but is it a good card? How about the LAN adapter, I see Type A and Type C not sure which one Im supposed to get(I have a Wii U Lan adapter but I dont want to take it out of the Wii U I plan on keeping my Wii U) Samsung also makes good micro sd cards but from what people have told me sandisk is better than samsung not sure why

There is the 200 GB Ultra version available for a few bucks more. Might end up slightly slower, but the storage space to cost to speed ratios seem pretty good.

FWIW, I charged my Switch Last night by my bedside using then Cable that came with my Pro Controller and
Anker 40W/8A 5-Port USB Charger PowerPort 5, Multi-Port USB Charger for iPhone SE/6/6 Plus, iPad Air 2/Pro/mini 3, Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge/S6/S6 Edge, LG G5 and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VH958F0/?tag=neogaf0e-20
My system was about 20% when I plugged it in and when I woke up 7 hours later it was fully charged. Can't say how long it took to charge but it did charge.

Can't speak to brand but it's highly rated enough I felt comfortable.

I took my Wii U Ethernet adapter and used it on my Switch because honestly, at this point, the few times I need network access, wireless will be just fine for the Wii U - the best days are behind him.

Just to let you know, that Anker charger will only charge at 15V/0.65A at most or 10W. It's identical to USBC 5V charger that can do 5V/2A like Apple 60/87W charger.

The only chargers I have tested so far that is on parity or charges faster than Nintendo charger is the Google 60W charger at 12W/1.25A, Google 18W charger at 9V/1.85A, and Apple 29W charger at 14.4V/1A. This is only charging the Switch itself.

That Anker charger is 40% slower than the charger I listed above when charging from its USBC port and 100‰ slower when charging from the USBA port.

Edit: my bad I mistaken it for the 45W Anker Powerport+ 5 USBC. I don't have a 60W version to test it with.

Yeah I mean if the Wii U is no longer download updates maybe its not even worth getting that LAN adapter and I can just use the one that I already have

I'm not much of a brand loyalist, but have not heard of any major complaints with samsung's cards.

I will point out that one has a max read of 80 MB/s (The other cards are 90 MB/s), which may or may not matter depending on if the Switch can max it out or not. I don't believe there have been enough tests to confirm. Any of these cards should be fine. The differences would most likely be negligible load time differences. Talking likely 5-10 seconds max in most cases.

I bought this $11 USB C charging stand from Amazon and it charges, works as a stable, perfectly angled tabletop stand.

It's absolutely not wobbly, even with the controllers attached, and almost rigid with them disconnected.

Only slightly odd thing is that the USB cable that emerges from the rear, is micro USB - but the charger on the stand is USB C.

Anyway I'm VERY happy with it so far. Solves all my tabletop charging problems and is small and portable to boot.

that looks pretty impressive for a stand just over ten bucks. Now would you say your planning on using this in tabletop mode on a lot of upcoming flights? Particularly showing a game with a walking green tank?

Oh, the Apple 29W charger works fine with the Switch? I was holding off for impressions on this one specifically, as that's also a charger that offers fast charging with the iPad Pro 12.9". If I can kill two birds with one stone, that's what I'd like to go for.

I bought an Anker USB-C cable and it doesn't freaking seem to work well with the Switch. When I plug it into the Switch it either doesn't connect properly and could be pulled out easily, or I force it in and then it's very tight to get out.

Ugh.

Pretty cool, but if that was USB-C on the back it could connect to the Switch Dock and make for a better dock.

I'm sure soon someone will make one like that anyway.

The USB-C spec specifically forbids the kind of cable you're describing (essentially an extension cable).

Yeah, the 29W charger does work fine on the Switch. It charges the Switch almost as fast as the official charger when I was measuring the power consumption.
