How do tiers work in Tekken?

the low and high end of tiers are just way more compressed because every character is sort of built off a single archetype

basically nobody would be all that impressed if you won with a C-tier character, they might just be impressed that you won

the current KoIF champion from korea washes the planet with Jack for free

edit - wait nobi won EVO with dragunov didn't he, whatever, point is nobody really gets blown up for being a shit character in this game

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND
a) Those tier lists are based off Arcade and don't reflect the changes seen in the console release.
b.) The tier lists gaps aren't as polarizing as other games and the last tekken championship/EVO was won by Saint with Jack-7, a "B-Tier" character.

Hmm... both my characters are "B-Tier".

Guess it's time to pull another FANG and win most of my matches with a character people think isn't high tier.

I think the tiers are compressed in this game.

Also, I think that's a weird attitude. It's like you are preloading an option select from wins or losses?

Not really, I just have this weird thing of liking low-tier characters. It's not really an option select, I know that I can just use a better character but I like winning despite "having the odds stacked against me."

It's weird, I know but it makes the victories feel all the more sweeter.

Thanks for the explanation.

Do you devalue your opponents wins against you based on their character and "tiers"?
Do you ever blame your losses on your character?

Honest questions.

Nope. I know what I get into when I choose a low-tier character, and I legitimately try to get good at the game and matchups to cover it. I do get salty sometimes against specific characters, but only when they're ridiculously not fun to play against like against Balrog in SFV, or as Orchid vs Cinder in KI. I play to have fun primarily and the competitive aspect comes second. If I picked a character and didn't enjoy them, I'd stop playing them. I originally gravitated towards Bison when I picked up SFV and while he's still arguably a better character than FANG, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought so I dropped him. My opponents don't have to follow some sort of unspoken rule of tiers when they pick their character, just go with what you enjoy.

No. Again, I know what I get into when I picked a character. If you'll look through my post history regarding F.A.N.G in the SFV OTs, you'll see that I don't get pissed about the fact that he's low tier. I get pissed about the fact that Capcpom is balancing him horribly, and making him more offensive when I just want to play more defensive. They're removing my preferred style of play which is what makes me angry, not the fact that he's still low-tier. Blaming your loss on a character is just idiotic and childish IMO (unless we're talking some Sagat from Vanilla SFIV or Omega Rugal from KoF level unbalanced).

Player ability factors in so much when it comes to Tekken.

If you're unable to defend against bears, chreddy or Hwoarang, you're gonna get wrecked so hard regardless of what the tier lists say.

I honestly think its safe to ignore tier lists for the most part, unless a character has some glaring, gaping holes in their game(which is unlikely at this point)

To the person who asked about blur.

No way to turn off motion blur that I can see on console

That was me. I got to play the game at a friend's all evening (vanilla PS4) and it did not have the option like you said. That's fine though since it defaults on instead of off, which is what I prefer. Turning it off makes the movement look like strobe light fighting to me in previous Tekkens.

Online team battle would've been great. But it's a shame the game doesn't even have it in offline...

At home we used to set teams of 8 random characters and see who would win with the improbable matchups of characters we don't usually play. Great fun and also great learning tool with friends.

Regarding this tierlist... Isn't there a new tier list? Because if my girl xiaoyu is that high after being low in the other series... Omfg.
A lot of people do seem to think Xiaoyu is one of the better characters in the game.

Though tbh I feel like it may be unfamiliarity for people outside of Korea/Japan since those guys seem to know full well how to deal with her.

Preload done on XB1.
Man I am excited to learn a new fighter, feels good every time. Hoping for XB1/PS4 communities/groups. Do we have a list of some kind? I guess the OT will have some then.

Tekken noob here

How difficult is Tekken execution compared to other games when looking at characters marked as 'advanced'?

Usually just frame level stuff or a little underneath that that's core to their game.

The other half is just not being able to play "Tekken" as easily as the rest of the cast due to their options being spread around in stances and such.

that list was made by nobi/take/yuu, top jp players.

I'm kinda interested in Tekken 7. Last one I played was Tekken 5. I was bad at it, but was proud I could do juggles and combos with Asuka. Being able to actually go online (and get slaughtered) should be fun.

The only thing I'm kind of hesistant about is the backdash canceling. Looks like you need to master it if you want any chance online. Is it hard to do on the dpad of a DS4?

character-specific execution is not generally all that serious in tekken, outside of a handful of characters that benefit a lot from hitting "just frame" attacks or characters that have back-sway / stance inputs

most of the execution skill cap is in the general movement system mechanics and level of knowledge required, move lists in this game are very long and some characters really improve their position when you have a strong understanding of when to use certain moves even when they have very specific contexts

the "mishimas" for example are "advanced" because not only do they have "electrics" (punch special moves that very powerful but only when you consistently perform the input within a very specific frame window), but they have the ability to dash while crouching

since you can cancel any form of movement command into any other movement command in tekken, these characters can then cancel crouch dashes directly into standing forward dashes and back into crouch dashes, which is what players refer to as "wavedashing" in tekken

so to be able to play one of those characters closer to their skill ceiling you need to be able to leverage these tools on top of the other standard elements you'd need to master any character

It's strange to see Asuka outside of B tier for once...

Not that it will ever matter for my actual skill level, but did she get buffs recently?

No, Xiao is currently top tier in the current build.

But you should understand that most Korean and Japanese players be they elite or higher tier players, can play pretty much the entire cast or at the very least a large portion.

Nobi for example can play everybody.

And Xiao player Tanukana plays like 10 different characters last I checked.

Compared to 2D fighters, its easier to get your foot in the door into Tekken.

Its fairly accessible to do basic combos and get some decent damage going, basic moves will generally be not too difficult to use.

However, if you care about getting in depth. There's a ton ,and I mean a ton to learn.

That is what is so great about the series.

Ling is legit

Execution is very easy for the bulk of the cast

Tiers don't mean shit and shouldn't affect your choices

And I'm playing on Pro right now and gotta say it's not as big of an improvement as it should be. If you're in this for graphics and single player... it's PC for you.

I have no idea who I'm going to main. The last tekken game I played was 5 DR, and that was back when I didn't take fighting games seriously so I just rotated around the cast for fun.

But I want to get good at tekken and I don't want to play a gimmick character...not yet anyways, I want to play someone that relies on good fundamentals so I don't learn bad habits.
