Twin Peaks Season 3 OT |25 Years Later...It Is Happening Again

The killer's reveal, I have to say, is probably one of the best television moments I have seen. It's horrifying, it's disgusting, and yet it makes so much sense. It felt like something I knew from the beginning, yet kept denying because it was too cruel. Suddenly Laura's erratic behavior can be understood - a girl who was systematically abused by her (possessed) father, who used drugs to cope with the abuse but at the same time kept trying to reach out to others and be good (Meals on Wheels, Johnny Horne). It's just so tragic...

Yeah, Laura is the beating heart of Twin Peaks. I think you'll enjoy Fire Walk With Me, it shows all these parts of Laura really well and it's super sad and tragic. It's a hard movie to watch at times, for various reasons, but Sheryl Lee's performance carries it.

Ray Wise's performance is also incredible in that as well.

no it wasn't. First off, actress was not in it. Second, seeming that because you thought she was Asian she was Josie is pretty racist. No other reason to link the two.

Since I'm the one who brought up the theory in this thread earlier I'm taking this a little personally, so let me give you the reasons I linked the two. Note I did this during my first watch of the episode, these were instant associations, not something I desperately came up with after watching the episode to justify my clearly racist thought.

And mind you I'm not saying they're fact in the slightest. In fact it's not a theory I'm subscribing to anymore, it's a bit of a crackpot one for sure and people have brought up more compelling stuff in this thread, but that doesn't change that I think it's a reasonably enough connection for people to make within the realm of Twin Peaks theories.

I for one linked the two because of the fireplace connection, the apparent recognition by the woman when she touched Cooper's face, and I associated the shut eyes with Josie's appearance in the doorknob (and yes, I know it's quite different). The actress not being in it didn't mean much to me because I knew she wasn't in the cast list beforehand and have been expecting a recast, and yes while I noticed it was a Japanese actress instead of a Chinese one I thought such a decision wasn't outside of the realm of possibility because of Naido's role as a mostly silent character with a somewhat obscured face. It'd still strike me as a more elegant recast than Donna's in the past. And finally I figured the purple realm was a home of BOB of sorts at the same time, who is of course connected to Josie's demise (Engels notably said there were ideas to have BOB and Mike come from a planet made of creamed corn, so I instantly associated the spaceship with this).

Anyway, it was just a stupid theory, but I think I've given you your reasons one would link the two. I just don't appreciate these racism accusations over something as silly as this.

Thanks for clarifying, but the entire thing is much ado about nothing. You're good.

Also, it's National Doughnut Day, so I'm just going to go ahead and leave this here (apologies if already posted).

I'm aware of that, yeah >.>

Anyway doughnut day, yes! I haven't had a good doughnut in ages, it ain't right. A new place opened nearby that seems decent but it's pricey and the damn things are square. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I kinda hate that skit. been a while though, maybe I'd like it more now

I just need to point out that the person who called someone "racist" or the idea that they thought an asian woman might have been Josie as "racist" is fundamentally wrong.

Racism means that you think the race is beneath you.

At the VERY LEAST what happened was profiling which is in no way racism. Learn your definitions and people wouldn't come at you. It makes a huge difference.

EDIT: Is Audrey really gone? She was so great.

Day 12 of no new Twin Peaks

Confusion and desperation have turned to hostility. We can only hope that the new episode arrives before the gaffers begin to devour each other.

Call for help.

HAHAHAHA I love they replaced the F word with Fork in the censored versions.

"What the fork did you do Ray?"
"I Forked up at the worst possible moment"

So I just learned that Sky Atlantic will be showing part 5 at 2am to simulcast with Showtime in the states???? Far too happy with this.

Seriously, this week has been Groundhog Day-tier with its sluggishness. Or I suppose more appropriately 25 years later slow :p

Hard to complain after that 25 year wait but now that it's here I need it. I need it bad and I need it right now. It feels like it's been an eternity that I've seen Tracey's sweet ass and side boobs mutilated by the Silent Hill figure from the box.

I'm good. I'm worried about 4th of July weekend though. It's going to be harder. Four episodes then a two week wait, is going to be easier than one episode and then a two week wait!

Don't worry, knowing Lynch I'm sure there's plenty more side boob where that came from, just hopefully not the mutilated kind.

A little more evidence, from the Secret Diary:

Awfully similar to Evil Coop's dialogue in Part 2.

That's neat. Good find.

Jesus, I was a young man then. I've lived a lifetime since....waiting.

Luckily for me I just watched the series back in 2012 I think it was, but that was still back before the new thing was announced so I did have that feeling of wanting more after that cliffhanger and not thinking it would ever happen.

The Twin Peaks Podcast released our review on episodes 3 and 4... I'm really scared of the fan backlash over the next week. Hope we weren't too hard on the episodes but we don't want to be dishonest and pretend we absolutely loved them.

I feel like we're the only podcast out there with even a remotely negative opinion or feeling of disappointment. Pretty lonely position to be in, especially when I get hateful messages for my lack of enjoyment of a TV show that I was looking forward to for so long.

Bruh I wrote fan fiction before I even knew that was a thing for what happened beyond the season 2 finale, couldn't let that shit go.

I welcome it and plan on listening, if anything I'm more interested in hearing some insightful criticism amidst the waves of gushing the episodes so far have received, and I say that as someone that also loved them :)

It's a perfect opportunity to rewatch the first 8 parts from the beginning, though!

Did you see my thread on Dugpa about the unofficial season 3 comic I was working on? Curious if our ideas matched up at all.

Well that's refreshing to hear! Thank you. :)

Welcome!

Really hope we start seeing some new compositions crop up soon for the soundtrack, Badalamenti ones. I'll be gutted if its all retreads of past themes. I'm sure we'll at least get more Lynch-produced tracks, and not just the ambient stuff.

I did not, got a link? Would like to take a gander.

We still have 14 hours to go. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't new music by him in the new season, but it's hard to say to what measure since this season in the first four parts at least is sparse on music. I like the choice for these four parts but I do have my fingers crossed we get some more music in the near future.

People keep bringing this up as a counter to certain criticism but its still an issue for me and the absence has definitely left an impression, what else are we supposed to go on at this point?

To me his work on the FWWM soundtrack is tantamount to genius, those themes are indelibly connected to the images they accompany in my memory. As I play them back in my head the atmosphere of that world is enhanced tenfold and also in subsequent rewatches. Music is a big deal for my connection to a work, especially one with such an already rich catalog to draw from as Peaks has. As such, the sparseness of the music in these four episodes has made the impact considerably less so on recollection, despite the excellent sound design and ambient scapes Lynch has composed. I dig it as its own thing, but for it to truly come alive for me I need something a bit more consistent, and I'm fully prepared for that to never happen, at least not on the level of FWWM. Cmon Lynch, bring back the demented string arrangements from the autopsy scene! Or something unsettling along similar lines as that, it added a realism to the paranormal fuckery few other soundtracks have accomplished in horror.

We know there's new Angelo music... maybe as much as he wrote for FWWM, but spread out over 14 hours, that's going to be thin. Obviously they aren't using music the way they used to, but I think we're going to be happy with the sound track albums we end up with.

Doesn't mean anyone has to like the new way they're using music though. It's a complaint I absolutely understand.

Don't worry, I didn't love them either. I enjoyed 1 and 2 a lot but 3 and 4 weren't great television in my opinion. Very, very slow, and not in a great way.

I am keep relistening to I'm Deranged by David Bowie from the Lost Highway soundtrack. Ofcourse movies are really subjective in terms of what people like and what they don't but for me Lost Highway is my favorite Lynch movie followed by Mulholland Drive. And I read a interview with Lynch Miguel Ferrer the actor who plays Albert is unfortunately already dead and so is Catherine E. Coulson who plays the log lady. Which makes me sad for both of them. Btw I almost never do rewatches with movies and even tv shows. But maybe tomorrow I will rewatch episode 1,2 and myabe 3 and 4. Because I won't be seeing episode 5 untill this thuesday :(

I do think you guys are too obsessed with ideas on what Twin Peaks was, but I totally understand why and screw anyone who shits on you guys personally for being honest - don't let them get to you. The way I see it, this is Twin Peaks doing to modern TV what the first series did for TV at the time it aired and trying the same thing would be kinda pointless.

That said, I thought Part 3 and 4 were Twin Peaks as hell in the way it presented the odd world and characters. Even the start of part 3 reminded me of the first time the red room was shown and how strange it was.

Great podcast btw, I've enjoyed you guys for a few years now!

I'm really enjoying the new season so far, I just hope it doesn't take them too many more episodes for Coop (and evil Coop as well?) to make it back to Twin Peaks.

For me once it's firmly established that a creator or author of something will get to do what they want, i can be calm and make peace with whatever they have resolved themselves to do. You could say my heart is strengthened by knowing this is exactly what they want.I am not familiar with most of David Lynch's other work besides Twin Peaks, but i really liked the first two episodes for what they are if it's Lynch going as hard in there as he wants. I read some people really hating on the first two episodes because they want the Twin Peaks they know and none of the other surreal bullshit Lynch makes. So much of that animosity seems to be tied to how they reacted to Fire walk with me, and i didn't live with that apparant dissapointment they have. I don't trust the feelings of past people period, the past is a dumb place that doesn't get it's ass kicked often enough.
I'm really enjoing where this plot is going and i don't have to feel some sort of anxiety of not seeing prime Cooper as soon as possible. I won't be falling apart if it takes an episode or two but that clearly is what the average TV-viewer feel.

I didn't know there were so many people here who didn't love ep 3 and 4. To me they probably were two of the best episodes of Twin Peaks ever, I really loved them and so did my friends. Pure lynch magic.

Congratulations, you really deserve it!
Wasn't too impressed with the first 4 episodes and am wondering if this season will have a central mystery (within Twin Peaks) or its just going to be more about what the characters are up to these days

Lynch has gone on record many times to say that Twin Peaks is all about Laura Palmer and Laura Palmer is Twin Peaks. So I'm guessing no.

I think, for the people who don't like the new episodes but are otherwise forgiving of the show, it's because the pacing doesn't afford any payoffs right now. Everything so far has been exposition because the episodes aren't edited with normal episodic structure.

Old Twin Peaks followed a set-up/payoff episode pretty closely. One episode would set a bunch of stuff up and the next episode would give you a little satisfaction of something from before being realized.

The current format of the show isn't doing that. It's been all set-up so far. And even if you can still enjoy it, it can also be unsatisfying to watch. Arrested Development tried this with their season four and it was really unpopular. I think it's better suited for a show like TP, but this style of storytelling requires patience from the audience.

Watching Cooper shuffle around and only repeat the ends of sentences for a half hour between two episodes, for example, comes with no reward for doing so. This is fine, but it can definitely be disappointing to watch.
