Nintendo Spotlight Presentation (their E3 conference) to be 30 Minutes in length

It's not that I think Retro doesn't have something cooking, but for a 30 minute presentation in the first year of the system's life I don't think they're going to show it. They revealed all of their 2017 big guns for Switch earlier in the year as part of their effort to hype it going into launch. If Retro had something earthshaking that was ready to show in a meaningful way as of E3, I feel they would have shown a teaser in Q1 rather than hold it for now.

It's definitely not impossible something will show, but 2018 feels right for their next game and the Switch selling well means there's not any incentive to announce games that are quite a ways off. A direct in Q1 2018 would be fine for a Q3-4 game.

I'm expecting perhaps one or two surprises at most, and those will probably be on 3DS. Most of the direct will short clips of their already announced 2017 slate.

Retros game is always first shown at E3, the only other big Switch event was a live Japanese show it would not have been shown yet, now is the time

Seeing as we know most of what's coming I strongly feel like whatever they show from Retro will determine how people react to the whole thing.

-Retro no-show: Where were the surprises? Where was retro? What has Nintendo been doing?
-Retro making DKCR 3 or a party game or a remaster: Disappointing show, we already knew about almost everything, Retro are being wasted!
-Retro new IP: Great show, Retro redeemed, Mario looks great, life is wonderful.
-Retro making Metroid: Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh nintendo won e3 aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
This is accurate

Well they have been working on the same game since late 2013

It's been...4 E3's since they've shown something. People getting worried about Retro again.

2010 was DKCR and 2014 was DKC:TF. Between then all they did was a bit of work on the side for Mario Kart 7 and DKC 3DS which they weren't the primary developers for. 4 years (2014-2018) wouldn't be an unprecedented cycle for them. I mean if they took that long to develop Donky Kong Country Returns 3 I'd be shocked but if they were kicking into gear for something larger and more ambitious technically that feels about right.

Yoshi and Mario Maker were by no means horrible

Mario Maker was a super-impressive tool that ended up a pretty mediocre Mario game. Yoshi, on the other hand, was an absolute hidden gem, and finally a worthy sequel to Yoshi's Island.

Good Feel are Nintendo's most underrated dev allies.

If I remember correctly it was documented that Retro wrapped Tropical Freeze in September 2013 and the game was put on hold for release schedule purposes. I may be wrong about that but it's what I recall.

Unless its a new Smash Bros, I would hope Nintendo would not have a port as their big reveal, which also has been rumored for a while from a lot of sources

I think Smash Bros is a lock to be there tho
Smash Deluxe is the opener, BUT a new third party character trailer is the closer.

Creeper creeps in.

If Retro was making a "2D" Metroid using the Donkey Kong engine, would it get any backlash for not being a 3D epic scale game or would everyone just be pumped that proper Metroid's back???

Its about how the game is really. Look at the new Dragonball game reveal and the positive reactions because it seems that it nailed the artstyle like no other game and has good gameplay, despite being a 2.5 d game and not as wast as xenoverse

Thing is if you go 2d in a series well etablished like metroid you gonna to bring (imo) much more innovation and gameplay wise to table because (again imo) 2d metroid are quite well explored whilein 3d where you could still something new and mindblowing like zelda becuase it was not done in the series beffore

Also, people are sleeping on Zelda DLC pack 2.

That fucking game is so incredible that it wouldn't surprise me if its DLC ended up stealing the whole show.

Kind of expecting a lot of late Japanese game ports, indie games, 2017 games, and a couple 2018 game announcements. Retro, I think, depends on if their game is coming out in the first half of the year or latter. Thinking what else there could be. Maybe Platinum's game is announced? It feels soon, but they work quick so it's possible, but I'm doubtful. Other than that, maybe some Wii U ports? Not sure what else. Not very exciting, but that'd fit the theme for this years E3.

honestly to "win e3" all Nintendo has to do is have an unannounced major game to show off. I don't expect that; I'll personally be happy with mario having a good showing, XC2 showing up and some cool ass Splatoon shit. But that doesn't change the fact that this e3 is lacking the oomph announcement (BGE2 comes close the the online stuff and the fact that it was CG kinda hurt it ...for me at least) lots of cool games were show off IMO but no real wow that's exists?!?!?! type announcements that E3 was known for. Someone salty said it earlier but perhaps the industry desperately wants out of what e3 became; a race to constantly on up each other with an game changing announcement instead of just showing off cool shit. Especially since Rockstar and too an lesser but same extent Nintendo can drop a trailer on a random tuesday and get the same if not more POP they would at E3.

I don't think Nintendo bucks that trend tommorow.

TF was also their first HD game so that probably contributed to some things, if Nintendo's other dev studios/teams are any indication.

Yeah, this is the argument against it for sure, and it's a sound one.

But it's also possible that
a) Retro simply wasn't ready with marketing materials / a vertical slice, and now are, or
b) Nintendo didn't want to show a 2018 game before launch, or
c) Nintendo knew that Zelda would carry the hardcore crowd through launch and didn't need it at that time.

Now that Zelda has come and gone, they need something else to keep the hardcore and various youtube influencers etc praising the system on social media. Metroid or a new Retro game would move the needle and do that job. If Retro's game is Q1-2 2018 I think they show it. If it's Q3-4, they don't.
Yep. This is why I think Retro is the most likely 2018 showing, unless XB2 is delayed.

I also lean on Retro being winter/spring over summer/fall/holiday unless their game is really ambitious or had development issues.

I also doubt it'd be the center piece of their holiday. Maybe it could take a XB2 December spot, but I think it is probably first half of the year or August/September.

Just picture yourself ten hours from now thinking "I stayed up for this?" and go to sleep
Yep lmao. Been my strategy starting late 2015 when I was sure Zelda wasnt making an apperance until E3 2016. Been sleeping good ever since, I ocassionally put my alarm clock on 10-15 mins before major directs like this one if I dont have work.

Too early for it, I think, when you consider that DLC 1 hasn't released yet (though I wouldn't put it past them to drop it tomorrow as a surprise, unless that is deterred by the proximate release of Arms) and how in that case, a separate video overview was never delivered at all. I know DLC 2 promises story/dungeon content, which is a better fit for a trailer, but I fully expect to hear about it on short notice, certainly no earlier than October.

You've omitted my personal fantasy request, which is a Kid Icarus-like revival of a dormant IP—specifically, Ice Climber.

I'm certainly not expecting big Japanese games. Most likely smaller ones like Fate/Extella from the April direct. Things more in line with Blazblue than Resident Evil.

I am assuming the rumor of Nintendo funding Beyond Good and Evil 2 is false, since there was no mention of that during the conference.

At that point I'm expecting a reminder about ARMS with maybe a hint of the additional content coming, more about Splatoon 2, a big Mario blowout and maybe a teaser at the end to close the presentation.
Not really seeing much more being shown.

I just hope treehouse gets to showcase some Rabbids and the spaceship game from Ubi.

Is Mario + Rabbids the best looking game on Switch now? There's a chance of Ubisoft bullshot of course but it releases pretty soon.

*looks at dragonball from arc systems not comming to switch*

*sad face*

i hope at least they got some visual novel games, would be a perfect plattform for it something like steins gate and dies irae

I thought it was later than September but either way you are correct that they completed Tropical Freeze in late 2013, so it had a three year development cycle. On top of the fact that Retro was assisting with MK7 and DKCR3D development when they were making Tropical Freeze. Before DKCR released in 2010 they had released MP:Trilogy Wiimake in 2009, MP3 in 2007, MP2 in 2004, and MP in 2002. They've typically ran on a 2-3 year development time. I wouldn't be surprised if Retro's game is released sometime between March and June 2018.

I did say "late Japanese ports" in my original post. You can look forward to Guilty Gear Dragonball for the Switch at the next E3 with a 2019 release date.

You've omitted my personal fantasy request, which is a Kid Icarus-like revival of a dormant IP—specifically, Ice Climber.

The reason I expect to see Zelda DLC tomorrow is two-fold:

1) A lot of Switch users will be watching, and the BotW attach rate is close to 100%. Nintendo wants as many of those people as possible to know about this DLC, so why not show it now rather than in October or later when the game isn't as fresh and Nintendo doesn't have as many eyes on them.
2) It allows them to do a bit of a victory lap with the single best asset the system has. That doesn't hurt, you know? Plenty of people will be watching who've yet to buy a Switch, too.

As for Ice Climbers... lol. A new Kid Icarus, however, would be right up my alley. Uprising was incredible. I was on the good side of that marmite game.

Even for a show that promises to focus on 2017, I don't think it's beyond Nintendo to tease one big game for "first half 2018" and another one for an unspecified slot in 2018. It's worth keeping in mind that the spring release calendar is often headlined by a mass-market-friendly title (think of precedents like MK8 or Splatoon), which Metroid (for instance) wouldn't be, although we did get Star Fox Zero last April in what was a very quiet year.

And who knows: maybe Nintendo will call on Retro to provide an answer for the multiplayer co-op shooter market occupied in the west by Destiny, The Division, and Anthem. Maybe something leveraging a well-known existing IP. How about this: the players are all ground troopers in the Galactic Federation...
