Sony refused cross platform play in Minecraft

when rocket league was announced for xbone, the exact same thing happened. but mS had a change of heart, apparently

Why do soooo many people have the Rocket League story flipped? MS was not against Sony crossplay with RL. Sony was. You’re like the fourth poster in this thread to think Microsoft was against it when it was the other way around.

Also wasn't it MS that created the tools to make cross play easy to incorporate into games or an I misremembering?

that's not what psyonix tweeted. so you can't blame me or anyone else for having it wrong. in fact, that may explain it.
"The Xbox platform doesn't allow for cross-play matchmaking between other systems as a general practice across all titles."

That's the crazy part: apologists in this thread are making up an alternate reality and somehow it's not just one or two people that think this. I just don't understand, lol.

So why do you guys think Sony refused? Surely someone here can do the math?

Sony will come around if the userbase of the cross platform services is equal to or larger than their own, but at the moment, it gives competing platforms access to a larger body of players than they would otherwise have.

Having PS4 games cross play with XBOX ONE, would be a big gain for Microsoft, and a proportionally small gain for Sony.

As platform holders you should expect them to leverage their userbases in a way that makes financial sense. For Microsoft and Nintendo, this makes sense, for Sony, it just makes competing platforms proportionally more appealing. Sony want people to buy their system to play with their users, to play within their ecosystem, they don't want people seeing other platforms as a means of saying 'Oh I don't need to get a PS4 now, because I can play with Barry on my tablet'.

Maybe if it turns out that this works well, and they will get access to the PC userbase, they might come around, but I very much doubt they have any significant interest in cross platform play with either console.
theres enough people for every platform that crossplay isn't a necessity but an added bonus/convenience

sony is just losing out since they'll lose some sales for new people jumping in

this argument would make sense if ps4 had millions of users while everyone else has only a dozen

That was before Rocket League Xbox One ever had any sort of cross-play at all. Ever since it got updated to support it, that's no longer the case. Literally the only one stopping cross-play between PS4 and XB1 is Sony themselves. The devs already said they already have everything technically worked out, they literally just need Sony's permission and they can just flip a switch to enable it.

They're not "JUST" losing out on a combined userbase, though. They're losing out on the HD Texture Pack and unlimited world size, which the Switch is getting. It's pretty crazy.

I imagine since PS3 is getting in on this combined player base and PS4 is not, the deal is it bypasses any kind of payment method involved with the services and relies completely on Realms or whatever it's called

ps3 isn't officially confirmed or not

not sure if it makes the ps4 situation any worse or better

i also doubt ms is doing this to get a bigger cut of the pie, otherwise there would be more resistance, not just from sony

It's true that when RL for xb1 first launched MS policy didn't even allow crossplay. Apparently , they didn't even have to tools to allow it. The moment they created the API, Sony suddenly wasn't open anymore.

I thought they corrected that and then came out saying RL would be the first one to use it
perhaps. i was just showing where the sentiment started.

right, but before rocket league had any sort of crossplay and the question about Ps4-Xbone was asked, that was Psyonix's answer.

Just Dance 2017 has (very limited) crossplay, in its World Dance Floor mode. Scoring and rank on the song and tournament leaderboards include players from Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo. It can be turned off for your console, but it's on by default. Just mentioning, as there were a few posts listing other games.

Generally when an accusation is levied (by a biased source on top of that) you would at least give a chance to the accused party to respond before declaring guilt.

Except that the action itself is an admission of guilt. We don't knwo their REASONING, but we do know that there is no actual reason that stands up either (literally nothing would be different or compromised on their end than it is with any other game that connects to an external server). If literally every version except for the Sony version can do it, do you really think someone other than Sony is 'guilty' of the holdup? They've also done it with Rocket League for over a year now.

Leaderboards aren't exactly the same thing. That's like saying Telltale games are crossplay because I can upload my TWD season 2 save from my Xbox and import my choices from Telltale onto my PS4 (Or Dragon Age Inquisition for that matter).

That's pretty cool! Do you he a link to this?

Can we please have the slides or any sort of other way of stating that whoever started that PS3 rumor is wrong?

From all I could gather, none of the last gen consoles including Microsoft's own 360 are getting updated to the Bedrock engine and thus won't be able to use crossplay. No article I found says they will be getting updated, tons say they won't and the slides aren't mentioning it either.

Who even started spreading this?

Haha.

It's a shame because this could have been really ground breaking if Sony was in on it. Minecraft has the best shot and unifying platforms out of anything. It's still very important and I hope it sets precedent for other smaller games doing this in the future.

A world where games like Minecraft, Call of Duty, Overwatch etc are all cross platform is a positive for all of us.

In every console generation, one of the big threes HAS to go out of their way to be the bad guy.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can defend Sony here, as all evidence points to them flat out denying it; Phil Spencer even said to ask Sony why its not appearing on their platform implying they denied it.

I've seen arguments saying it puts the PlayStation system at risk and all I can think is: aren't Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple, Google and whatever other platforms its on also at risk, so therefore it's in Microsoft's best interest to minimize any potential risks for all platforms.

I've also seen people say that PlayStation has the largest population for pretty much every multi-platform game, and while this is true, but by enabling cross-platform play they are letting their gamers be able to play with so many more people that will never buy their platform (due to lack of cash, lack of interest, or downright fanboyism), and this is true for every other platform (except arguably PC).

The only argument I've seen that fits has a pretty console warish approach (which is why I don't fully believe it) and that's to screw over Microsoft, the reason I believe that is because Sony allows cross-platform play with PC, which is arguably less secure then Xbox. The only thing PC has going for it is a potentially larger player pool but I'm too lazy to look up figures (like Rocket League population numbers).

cross-post from other thread, because relevant:
”The original Java PC version and all other isolated versions will have ‘Edition' names, like Minecraft: Wii U Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition," the spokesperson said. ”Further, we are still in discussions with Sony about PlayStation and have nothing to confirm at this point. We would love to work with Sony to bring players on PlayStation 4 into our united ecosystem as well."

the dream not dead yet?
don't get to excited or your hope up high

Minecraft - cross-platform play is brilliant, but it's not with PlayStation.

Phil Spencer: Yeah, you have to talk to them about that.

Did you ask them?

Phil Spencer: We want Minecraft to be playable on all platforms with cross-play. I'm committed to that. Our relationship with Nintendo has been great. But you'll have to ask them. The team has done a nice job supporting Minecraft on PlayStation platforms pre us owning it, post us owning it. I like the fact it's there. I think the connected world of Minecraft we're building, I'd love to be able to bring it to all consoles.
sony deserves all the crucifixion it's getting for this shit.

A couple of my PS4 friends are really miffed about this lol. Has anyone reached out to Sony for comment yet?

edit - hmm, seems maybe 'discussions' are still happening.

I've never seen that on the PS4 version, especially an option to disable it.

When I've played online on a Saturday night, there's been like 20 people online.

even if someone does, their arrogant ass response will probably something along the lines of "it wasn't a good idea for our consumers" like what they said for EA access

Rocket League has just confirmed itself as cross platform. Be interesting to see who with, as it might really turn the pressure up.

Scratch that, from the Rocket League thread:

Cross-Plat with Xbox and Steam confirmed:

"You asked, and we listened! As we just revealed during the Nintendo Spotlight: E3 2017 Direct video, Rocket League is indeed coming to Nintendo Switch later this year!

Rocket League on Nintendo Switch will have all of the same content, features, and updates that we've released on other platforms in addition to exclusive Battle-Cars and Customization Items, like Mario and Luigi hat Toppers!

Rocket League will also support all of Nintendo Switch's play modes, including TV Mode (docked), Tabletop Mode, Handheld Mode, and both Online and Local Multiplayer. Online Multiplayer supports up to eight players, and Cross-Network play will be supported as well, allowing Switch players to hit the field with players on Steam and Xbox One."

https://www.rocketleague.com/news/rocket-league-nintendo-switch-holiday-2017/

So now there are TWO Nintendo Switch games that offer cross-network play.

Sony...what the hell are you doing?? Don't be so arrogant man.

well, there goes the "it must be mean old Microsoft trying to force a bad deal on them" excuse.

Everyone knows that when you spam Nice Shot and Nice Save in pattern, it acts as a memory editor that allows you to bring down PSN. This is really the only sensible option to have a unique version that doesn't permit it.

Yes. World Dance Floor puts you online to dance against other people, real-time.

It's not like that at all. You can't message people on other systems, but you're competing against them live, and rewards / points / mojo get divvied up appropriately. But like I said, it's still quite limited.

According to this post on Ubisoft forum, only Xbox One can turn it off. (It's with the settings where you select on/off AutoDance, Pictos,Lyrics, etc. There's also a notification each time you start the game). It should be on for you, I guess.

When the scores are tallied up at the end of each song or tournament, the players on Xbox have a big Xbox icon in front of their names. Those on other systems don't have any icon next to their name.

I'm usually on late afternoons PDT, and there'll be at least 60 online. Weekends I've seen up to 130 or so.

What a pointless thing to be in uproar over, Probably those same types who sat quite at the conference, Spend more time moaning about games and features rather than playing them. Jaded gamers are the worst.

Sony don't have too, Simply because others do. Fair play to them sticking too it, When like they said, They have done it before anyway.

lemme get this straight. Mojang comes out with an update that unites all versions of the game, gives them all shared dedicated servers, infinite worlds, the "tradeoff" being cross play, and this is a fucking pointless thing to be in uproar over?

Sometimes I feel discussion on this site would improve if there were a rule to read the last two or three pages before posting. We ain't even 'jaded gamers' but jaded gamers aren't worse than corporate cheerleaders.
