"PS4 is like a 5 years old PC and it’s really holding developers back"

Wouldn't it make more sense for them to comment on the power of ps4 pro and x1x relative to pc's today, since ps4 came out in November 2013?

You can't, as a developer, make Pro or XOX exclusive games, or games that are built to push those consoles to the limits, because they won't run properly on PS4 or XOne.

I think more developers will take a PC approach with preset settings. I have mentioned this before in other threads.

X1X = High to Ultra settings (with higher resolutions)
PS4 Pro = Med to High settings (with higher resolutions)
PS4 = Low to Med (with dynamic resolutions and some 1080p games)
X1S/X1 = Low to Med (with low resolutions and dynamic resolutions)

I know these may not be spot on, but you get the idea. The systems are basically x86 PCs in a console form factor.
this does nothing for what is looking like a stifling of potential in non graphic related processing.

Incremental hardware every 3 years, new games released will always work on the most current hardware as well the last model (but not the model before that).

Problem solved?

I am reminded of the comment by CD Projekt basically saying they could have made the Witcher 3 look a lot better by keeping it exclusive to PCs but then they wouldn't have had the install base to even fund the game to look that good

My biggest question about half step systems is how do we push the generation further if games are mandated to run on base model systems?

pssst, they're designed to run exactly the same games but with better IQ and at larger resolutions.

As usual, better games appear as the generation evolves.

What a garbage article and a lazy as fuck OP to boot, how'd you even find this?

.

considering that the ps4 is almost 4 years old and console hardware is already behind the ball compared to PCs when they release saying "PS4 is like a 5 year old PC" is almost a compliment

yep, we'll take it. thanks, guy!

Isn't the ONE S the lowest end system of the lot, and therefore if we are to start pointing fingers, the ONE S is holding developers back?

I do agree though. That's why I see the PRO and ONE X as pretty pointless. Yes, hardware wise they offer good value for money in theory, but in practice that hardware isn't being put through its paces because games are held back by the lower end systems.

I would love to see how often a developer complains about a console holding them back to how often their releases seem horribly unoptimized vs other games that come out at the same time. I have a feeling that ratio would be very high.

Hey, if the PS4 is holding devs back, they can always go and develop solely for TitanXP specced PC's and see how that works out for them...Why don't they?

This is a really poorly written article. Otherwise yeah the PS4pro is just an upgraded ps4 and both are old tech. Saying the Pro is holding things back is weird though when the ps4 and xbo are significantly worse.

Same CPU. Which is honestly worse than a 5 year old PC's.

It seems to me that the largest of the gaming market outside of mobile, is casual folks mainly concerned about price. So yeah Sony could release a console as powerful as a PC for say $899 for next gen, but if nobody buys into it, who are these developers going to make games for? Yeah your game looks damn pretty but it only has 1/4 of the reach it used to before.

I mean I guess it's nice to want things. Most gamers, I would imagine, are content with what the PS4 offers if they can pick one up for $300 or less. It is what it is.

When game development budgets are pushing close to 100 million for some titles and consoles can still manage to run games like Horizon...I'm going to go ahead and say the current consoles aren't holding back shit.

We're at a point where just about any vision can be brought to life with the current generation of consoles. It's more a question of budget and ability.

VR is a different story.

There's a reason PC exclusives aren't visually surpassing console exclusives...budget is the primary limiting factor for graphics at this point, not horsepower.
Well said.
Am still super excited for HW breakthroughs in VR space since I know it's not budget constrained as much.

This obvious and true statement is going to make people really mad.

Yes the games might look amazing but they are made to be able to be played on the lowest level of system it's compatible with which this gen is the original Xbox One. That doesn't stop games from looking better on more powerful systems and good benefits from upgrades like the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.

Many people here bought the PS4 Pro after saying for years that more powerful PCs were not worth it because games were made with a baseline of consoles in mind, yet when the option was available to them they jumped at the chance to make games look/run better. There are noticable and good improvements you can get with better hardware even if the baseline is much lower than what your machine is capable of.

The baseline won't really change until a complete new generation starts.

In 2003 Josef Fares created this masterpiece. The top of the line CPU in 2003 was a dual core Pentium 4. Imagine what he could have done with a modern 32 threaded CPU from 2017. The same thing as in 2003 because it's a movie, not a game.

Well, after seeing God of War and Spiderman running on PS4, i think i'm fine. Pretty sure 99% of people can wait another 2-3 years before next-gen starts.

i think the developer complaining about low power consoles should at least be making games that are considered to be at least the top 3 graphical benchmarks for the system. otherwise it just feels like excuses. lol

it's the equivalent of making a lego game and then claiming it's the PS4's lack of power holding back it's visuals. lol

Here is his full quote:

I've never understood the bolded. Based on Steam stats alone, the majority of people don't have PCs that are as capable as current consoles, so if these consoles didn't exist then the lowest common denominator is actually lower.

Almost certainly talking about CPU. The consoles are fine with the GPU power they have, and that is highly scalable, but those CPUs...

Most computers on the steam stats will have much more capable CPUs.

I know consoles are the Lowest common denominator but without them, would games really be much more advanced? I mean, lots of people have old PCs out there right?

The most popular PC games (League, CS:Go, Wow, Overwatch) aren't even technically advanced or demanding. It's almost like developers care more about the most people playing games than they are trying to push everything to its limit. That's why consoles continue to be and will be important. It's still one of the most accessible ways to play games on.

the beauty of consoles is that devs works around the limitation imposed by the console and gets the best out of the system instead of brute forcing it with raw computational power. yes the ps4 is old, but it was an OMG what a beast when it was released with its 8gb gddr5.

the honest truth is that the console business model is not cutting it anymore, look at iphones, hence the mid gen devices ps4 pro and xbox one x scorpio. we cannot have an 8 year console live cycle anymore. a 5 year old cycle just feels right.

still uncharted and horizon impresses the hell out of me

also it important to put things into context, a way out is a split screen game which requires a hell more computational power to render both screens .

Consoles do not hold PCs back, they do the exact opposite.

'PC Gaming' does not solely mean the beefy rigs that most people on enthusiast forums use. What consoles do is establish a baseline specification for games to be built at, which can be comfortably run on mid-tier PCs and then scaled up and down accordingly. Everyone benefits, regardless of the hardware you choose to play your games in.

If games were built solely for high end PCs, then a very small amount of people would be able to play them.

The problem is, in general, "gamers", especially on the PC side, can't see beyond their own needs and desires.

In their mind, why wouldn't anyone want a high end gaming rig? They can just set a little money aside and build one, right?

The ability to see things from someone else's perspective just doesn't exist for them.

The PS4 and Xbox One were already severely outdated by the time they came out. The Xbox 360 and PS3 were much more powerful if you compare each generation to a mid-range PC of its time.

Hey, if the PS4 is holding devs back, they can always go and develop solely for TitanXP specced PC's and see how that works out for them...Why don't they?

"PS4 Pro is like a 5 years old PC and it’s really holding developers back"

Then make games only for really high end PC, and watch your investment most likely become a failure.

Like Star Citizen?

Why in the hell would you pick a threadripper for gaming? It's not gonna be any better than any of the Ryzens at it and it will likely be worse. And that gif implies that the Jaguar was a good CPU in 2014.

My PC is best for playing multiplats at higher framerates.
My PS4 Pro is best for playing multiplayer titles because of the larger communities and is also the platform of choice for the majority of my friends.

You don't have to buy the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, but if you do, you will have the best version of each respective platform.

So a system that will be 4 years old this year isnt as powerful as a PC today?

There are plenty of games that dont release on consoles. How many of them simply cant because of power?

Maybe said dev should up his game, I mean this old ass console can produce graphics like this:

And a more powerful console could do even more.

I mean this isn't a controversial statement, but it's also telling us water is wet, so... ok.
"Old hardware that was budget when it launched, is outperformed by new hardware".

I would say that devs should focus their efforts to make good, original games, cause we just hit a point where I dont give a fuck about graphics anymore...

The thing is, if it wasn't holding developers back they would probably be programming for said powerful PCs and the industry would not be anywhere as large as it is now, because most people just dont want to buy 1k+ Gaming machines

I know it's been stated over and over again, but let me say it once more: this is the poorest writing I have ever seen, from any mainstream media outlet, in my entire 31 years on this planet.
