Splatoon 2 Direct announced (7.6.17 @ 7AM PT / 10AM ET)

Look at the Salmon Run times.

It's open for 24h, then it rotates map and/or available weapons. It's not as bad as everyone is saying.

because it's dumb and i don't see the point of doing it

I never said it needed to be. I said it could be worse. They want it to feel like you're being "hired" by this company and they don't need you all the time.

It's dumb. It's not competitive or player vs player. You should be able to play it whenever you want. Not have to follow a god damn schedule to play a mode. Days at a time its not available. It's the fucking stupidest shit

Nah, I'm not going to chill. I have no one to play with locally. There's absolutely no way to defend this decision that makes any sense to me.

And even then you need multiple switches to play locally. Would have liked a splitscreen local option

As is this game is probably going to be a pass unless I can find ot cheap, like $30

Why does it need to be on a timer at all?

My tentative guess is that they think everyone will be playing turf/ranked

You also get special currency ( i think) in salmon mode. Having it at set times, ensures that people will play - and you will get a team together so you fight for that special currency/items. Wouldn't be surprised if it turns into a raid mode of some sort as well.

I don't know though because it seems to be 'on' on most days anyway.

It doesn't appear to be... it's not playable between 5pm on 7/21 and 5pm on 7/22 for instance. It's a really annoying decision. The only reasoning I can think of is they don't want the limited user base to be spending all of their time in that mode rather than turf war or the ranked modes, but that's a problem that should be solved shortly after launch when the user base is in the millions.

I'm hoping it's the case that the Salmon Run times will be tuned around the matchmaking situation, especially if teams are stratified by difficulty. But what worries me is that there is a precedent for blocking off modes to funnel players into events, the way Splatfest reduced the entire game to Turf War in the original for days at a time (and might again this time around).

I actually wonder if Salmon Run's timed availability is in place mainly to permit disabling it during Splatfest.

Just finished watching.

Can't wait!

The Umbrella will be my new main weapon.

Move over Callie and Maire, new Waifus!

The phone app actually looks like it'll be easy to use and fairly useful. The real problem with it is that it's the only way to communicate with friends. If it was just one option people would be loving it.

Also the visuals for this game have really been improved. Everything looks much better, even the lighting engine looks like it was improved.

I could understand when they made those kinda decisions in Splatoon 1 on WiiU when they didnt know how well the game will sell, but Splatoon is huge now, there is no reason to be making decisions based on the user base being split now, there will be more then enough people for all modes like every other big online shooter.

I hated that shit so much in splatoon 1. I was really hoping they would get rid of all the timing, locking, and rotation shit as I loved the gameplay, but I cant be bothered to deal with the setup around it again.

Am I able to create a party of three and play online? From the Direct, it made it sound like you could only do two or four.

Normally I wouldn't ask, but you never know what dumb shit Nintendo will pull.

BTW, did you guys all get the period joke during the stream? Made me chuckle. Completely unexpected coming from Nintendo. Guess someone in Treehouse was being cheeky.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about:
"Inklings like to think of her [Flow] as their crazy, old aunt."
I must be missing something as I don't see the connection.

This seems to be the obvious answer. Up for every day and then down for three in a row is a suspiciously specific timeframe.

It's not up for every day. There's at least a 24 hour gap between every session.

Plus, it's highly unlikely Splatfests are going to be three days long.

Game is looking really good, I had to watch a youtube log of the stream so the encoding was not finished but was the stream in 1080p?

What do we have to do to get the pink and green joy con in North America?!

I'm super excited for the game, though. Looks like the single player will be exciting and robust and not just an elongated tutorial.

It's playable at some point every day, if not all day, with the exception of that three day period.

Either way it's all speculation at this point. We don't know if that's the schedule for release or if splatfests will work the same this time around.

A Yeezy product placement tie-in ala the Mercedes DLC for Mario Kart 8 would be pretty awesome.

Already looks like they're ripping off the clothing

Who cares if it's playable "at some point every day"? There are 24 hour gaps after every session. That's not acceptable at all.

The three day gap is so ridiculous I don't even feel like expanding on that.

The devs have doubled-down on this bullshit from the first game (which I could kind of understand at the time, due to the Wii U's pitiful install base). It's insane and completely indefensible.
