Splatoon 2 Direct announced (7.6.17 @ 7AM PT / 10AM ET)

So when's that Marina amiibo coming out?

If it's like Splatoon 1, about a year after the game came out.

Oh man, Tenta-Cool and new Squid Sisters Amiibo next year?

Seeing the content at launch all in one place really goes to show how big the first Splatoon was by the time they finished adding modes and weapon types to it.

Highlights for me:

- Multiple sensitivity settings per layout. Necessary, since the Splatfest showed me that while I'd prefer to play tabletop for most weapons, one-handed aiming is very intuitive for the Roller, and I might prefer attached/handheld for it.
- Separate ranks per multiplayer mode.
- Speeding through Sheldon's messages was pretty much my top UI request; still not the best way of displaying a pile of weapon updates if you haven't logged in for a while, but now it's now longer actively bad.
- Port Mackerel is back with the sponges from the first game's campaign.
- Love the Overwatch-like silhouette on the new target-painting gear ability. It looks like a straight replacement for the Echolocator, which is gone from the Special slot.
- Can't wait for that umbrella weapon—first thing I thought of was the Parasol in Arms.
- I know everyone's abuzz about the new idols, but for me the standout character designs are the new shopkeepers.

I assume they didn't show everything about the weapons, just a mix of old and new, but I do wonder what the status is of older weapons that are similar to the base types (Aerospray, Squelcher, Splatterscope, and so on). And I wonder how viable the arranged-team league play will be without the app.

The app looks great, and I like how modern it is. You can access stats and even do some game related stuff in it (buying stuff etc.). Just like in the other MP game companion apps.

They can make Salmon Run happen always if they want, and you can play it in local MP whenver you want. So chill.

I think that this game is going to get pretty good reviews, 1 was reviewed "low" because it was "missing" stuff ( I don't agree with them, especially because that was the plan from the start). Splatoon 2 has so much everything and even a black waifu so that nets immediately a one point in reviews.

But most of all, this game follows the best Nintendo tradition, the attention for details. I just love it. Inklings' eyes are so expressive!

And they handled pretty much every nitpick I had with the first one, so I need to get this. But maybe after the launch, if they give us game+joycons combo... THAT would be neat!

It's actually one of my favorite design decisions. Besides keeping matchmaking fast, it let's you focus your loadout and tactics for a handful of maps, plus you learn the maps faster.
It think it goes along with the festival feeling of the game in general.

Yeah pretty much this. Also it solves the issue that other FPS have - and in some degree Mario Kart - singly voting for the same map all the time. Cod just turned into Nuketwon 24/7

I'm wondering why that is partially the reason why they are putting Salmon mode behind timed doors - They might be afraid you might not be able to fill your team up - most people will be playing turf wars/ranked. It looks like they have special currency as well so it should mean that people will play it together at set times.

Are they seriously sticking with the shitty 2 hour map rotation garbage? And ADDING another layer of time gated content with the new MP mode???

This needs to die.

Here’s to hoping ARMS gets a stats app. Whosever dumb idea it was to not have that in the game has a chance for redemption here.

I feel similarly. The idea of having everything available all the time is, of course, better, but practically, what if your favorite mode was the least popular overall and you could rarely get a match? Better too schedule a time for everyone to play it, than let it die. But it's still pretty bizarre and I'm not surprised that it hasn't been copied by other developers.

Nah, I'm not going to chill. I have no one to play with locally. There's absolutely no way to defend this decision that makes any sense to me.

BTW, did you guys all get the period joke during the stream? Made me chuckle. Completely unexpected coming from Nintendo. Guess someone in Treehouse was being cheeky.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about:
"Inklings like to think of her [Flow] as their crazy, old aunt."

Haha, many minutes later and there is still no thread about Nintendo Switch Online app and Splatnet 2. I guess nobody wants to take responsibility for what will be in there.

I don't mind map and mode rotation for the conpetitve side but Salmon run being timed is dumb. Why does a horde mode need to be on a timer?

Maybe it doesn't look as bad as first feared/kind of makes sense. Nothing to rage about ;) I don't know though!

It's not the worst thing. From the video it looked like it will happen frequently.

Can someone get a picture of the Salmon Run mode map? It looked like it showed it happening every day or two days.

This is where I stand on the Salmon Run rotation as well, though seeing the day-long times pop up in the video make me think it won't be so bad. It's the mode I'm most excited about and there's no reason to treat it like a Splatfest (or rather, the way that Ranked was disabled during Splatfest in the first game) when there just isn't an overlap between a co-op experience and the head-ot-head multiplayer.

The Ranked and map rotations are great, especially with a more sensible two-hour window, but Salmon Run really should be available in parallel around the clock. I hope this is a kind of soft launch to see what the matchmaking situation is like (so people draw from a pool of teammates at the same difficulty level without much of a wait) before the times are relaxed later on.

It's open for 24h, then it rotates map and/or available weapons. It's not as bad as everyone is saying.

I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw this, but notice that there are alternating gaps of 1-3 days between the slots. Never making a Salmon Run slot won't be a problem, thankfully, but it still feels arbitrarily restricted if I just want to play co-op. Orienting it around a standardized map/weapon rotation makes sense if there is going to be some kind of rank/difficulty climbing that the matchmaking is built around.

Loved what I was seeing. Only gripe was with Salmon Run being open at specific dates. Dumb as hell, especially since you can do it locally whenever.

Look at the Salmon Run times.

There's still at least one day at time where you can't play the mode at all. Sometimes multiple days. It's horrible.

I'm actually fine with them rotating stages and weapons. That doesn't bother me.

The phone app actually looks like it'll be easy to use and fairly useful. The real problem with it is that it's the only way to communicate with friends. If it was just one option people would be loving it.

Also the visuals for this game have really been improved. Everything looks much better, even the lighting engine looks like it was improved.

It's playable every time on that screen. They're just changing map and weapons supplied.

It doesn't appear to be... it's not playable between 5pm on 7/21 and 5pm on 7/22 for instance. It's a really annoying decision. The only reasoning I can think of is they don't want the limited user base to be spending all of their time in that mode rather than turf war or the ranked modes, but that's a problem that should be solved shortly after launch when the user base is in the millions.
