PS+ Price Rise

Hold up XBL Gold is also 50 quid a year?
No wonder Sony hiked the price up, they were probably always looking over the fence enviously.

No it's 40. Ps+ is now £10 more than xbl

Otherwise I don't really see a reason why companies wouldn't want to give everyone the best deal possible in order to maximize their sales.

because heavy discounts to all means less earnings. they will be subsidized by sony via the PS+ subs i imagine. most publishers want to sell their games for full whack to make the most money. the PS+ discount help initial sales though and promotes positive world of mouth (see rocket league) to those who don't have PS+, of which they will get more money from those copies sold since they aren't discounted.

sony will likely benefit by getting new PS+ subs in the process too. especially if people see the cost of the game (say $20 and then the yearly cost of PS+ which nets them MORE discounts and at least 24 "free" games for $50) and weigh up the differences and future freebies/discounts and decide PS+ sub is actually a better deal.

Glad i got the deal for 18 months at £30 recently. Currently have 2 years till it runs out.

The price rise kinda blows but you can often get good deals. If they dry up then i may e eventually move back to pc full time. Will see.

Ps+ is normally worth it to as i normal recoup the value and then some with the additional discounts. But as the price rises and i find i buy less games it will hit a point its not good value any more.

Paying for games I'll likely never have interest in playing (which is the vast, vast majority) is pretty damn bad.

A free game for 5€ is a funny conception. And online was free and is still the same. No, it's terrible.

We don't know what we're paying for, either it's to play online and the game is free or we're paying for the game and online is free.
Whichever way you look at it it's not the end of the world, we need to remember that game prices themselves haven't gone up in years and we're getting even more digital deals now than before.
To those that find it worth it they'll continue buying it and for their sake and mine I hope the service improves.

As a former Plus user with only a Vita, I'm glad I stopped using the service for only one console. Cloud saves are not worth 60€ a year.

Then Sony needs to be transparent.
I'd be fine with them being honest and announcing a cheaper model for just online, because I defintely don't care for the games they pick for me.

We don't know what we're paying for

we know what the sub money goes towards though. and it's mainly the "free" games every month. i mean, do people think devs and publishers give that stuff away out of the kindness of their heart? even though they're only long running rentals, it's ultimately a potential sale lost forever. so they will be compensated for those potential losses in sales.

a lot of the stuff free on PS+ is indie, but they're usually brand new indie releases. those creators cant afford to be giving their "hot off the press" game away to so many without being subsidized for it. and you can complain about the value you get from PS+ when they're giving you "lovers in a dangerous spacetime" or something, but the fact is it will have cost sony money to give it in the first place. times that by 6 per month and i imagine it gets quite expensive

Wait, how would you know it's the same and more terrible? You don't seem to have PlayStation subscription by the way you are talking, and you certainly don't seem like you owned any Sony products before hand to really make this judgement.

As someone who has been using the service since PS3, yes, there has been massive improvements that I can vouch for. The service hasn't gone backwards at all....so stop.

The only thing I really dislike with PSN and PS+ is the low bandwidth. It takes forever to download things. Its uptime seems fine now? Can't recall when there were any issues the last time.

This seems to be a regional thing. I get identical dl/ul as other services.

I max out my 50mbps connection when downloading games from PSN, but I live in a small country, so maybe the contention on the servers is smaller here.

Huh? You can easily find one year codes online for $35. If you pay the full price then that's on you.

They're region free unlike the PSN codes.

Not strictly true sadly.
I bought a years Xbox live from CDKeys and it would not redeem. When i contacted support they told me it would only work in Brazil so being from the UK I had to use a vpn to get it redeemed.

Yes, we are. Why ARE we here though? That is a discussion worth having and there's more to it than the simplistic "Microsoft started it, Sony took advantage of it". Companies will always try to extract from you the maximum amount of money that you allow them to. Normally competition would prevent such blatant cash grabs but competition is essentially non-existent in the console space.
I just meant that Microsoft normalised the practice of paying for online. I mean it was a very different time back then, so I guess you have evaluate that period of console gaming in more detail. but once the genie is out the bottle it can't go back in.

PS+ is a really bad proposition, at normal price.
If you can find discounted codes online tho, it can be alright, mostly because of the extra savings during various sales, which are pretty solid.

To be honest i never paid full price for ps+ and xbox live gold. I usually spend 30-35 euros each per year.
Usually when they on sales i just stack them up. For example ps+ was couple of months ago for 30 euros a year. I bought 2 of them, and i got now ps+ until end of 2019 :)

Lol it is true, you just didnt read what you were buying.

There are numerous outlets you can buy subs for your region for around 75-80% of retail price.

When you talk about the games you get with these subs, I only really consider the 360 games as good value because you keep them even if not subscribed. Sure, I've got many Xbox One games but pretty meaningless to me when it's tied to a sub I don't subscribe to all the time. It's more like a bad Xbox Game Pass.

Ok well buying cheap subs can have problems, not all subs are region free.

The ones on CDKeys are wrongly sold as region free but clearly not all of them.

Was going to purchase a one year suscription again after a few years playing on PC only.

But no. No way I can defend this. Their service has gone downhill, the InstantGame Collection is a joke compared to what we used to have, now the prices are getting increased slowly. Hell, they don't even respond to user feedback on their Blog (at least on Europe) anymore.

I miss the 2013 Sony. Not this one, beginning of last gen Sony.

Of course people will keep paying for this, which is a shame, but you can't just pretend to make me pay for something -- online connectivity in 90% of the catalog, that is -- that should be free without a good offer in return.

I mean, if at least the money given was going straight to mantainance of the Online infrastructure, I guess I could pay something. But 60 a year for how things are right now, where you can't even take full advantage of your Internet speed?

Such a shame, really.

Lucky I bought a few years recently. I am clear until 2020.

I don't play multiplayer much and only real feature I use is cloud saving and a good few of the games.

I am happy with the service and the €70 worth of games we get a month.

Not even free or paid to keep games even, they are glorified rentals once your sub is gone goodbye acces. The PS+ game discounts are nice tho but still.

I doubt they will even let you keep the games when the service goes down for ps3 and vita or ps4 in the future, they "might (big if)" let you keep the downloaded ones tho.

I dropped PS+ recently, I just wasn't able to justify the price anymore even when gotten on sale. Often I already owned the free games I was interested in so it felt like I was double paying for them.

I remember on the PS3, which had a better wifi chip than the original PS4, I was only able to get 5 to 10 Mbps when trying to play online. When on Ethernet which I was only able to do rarely, if at all...I would only get a measly 10 to 12. Back then, I have only 60 Mbps which was the standard for comcast. The OG PS4, I was able to get roughly 20 to 50 Mbps on the wifi while on cord I could only get peak highs at 70 at this time, comcast introduced higher blast speeds at 150 Mbps.

Now with 200 Mbps from comcast which is still sad....I'm seeing about 150 to 190 on cord and 60 to 120 on wifi with a pro. I haven't experienced any to much downtime. When I play online, I'm never at a low ping and I'm not banding all over the screen. I experience little to no lag. My friends list and all of that populate as normal...sometimes it's slow but it's not 10 second I'm waiting...it's usually just 3 to 4 seconds. Like the only time PSN really stutters for me is when I need to load the "What's new" page. I wish I could remove it since I never look but that's about it.

Obviously my experience is anecdotal but to say that PSN is more terrible than it was before is straight up BS. PSN on PS3 went down so often, it even boggles my mind that PSN on the PS4 experiences little to any downtime in an entire year. I remember when it took them days for Sony to get PSN back up....now it's takes a couple of hours....sorry for being long winded but I mean, the service isn't google or Amazon, but it manages well on it's own now much more than before. And this is without me needing to change any CDN or whatever other hacks people have to do to get a jump in speeds.

Always had great value from PS plus from the free games and discounts. Theres always quite alot I have never bought. Saying that, no one likes price increases, but it was always going to go up at some point.

I feel like that of all my subscription services I pay for out of an entire year. PSN is the best value by a mile. Of course I don't want the price to go up though but the amount of hours I put into it plus the free games, it's not even close to something like Netflix or Amazon. XBL is the only other service comparable to the value/money ratio.

Wonder if this will happen in other territories.

US got hit last year, around the time we got a price cut here in Switzerland (not sure if any other countries got a price cut last year too?). They basically just reverted it back to how it's been for years, so I'm not that bothered.

Just seems like they want it to be uniform, across the globe.

That somehow excuses Sony for all of this? It's pretty clear that console gamers are willing to put up with a lot of crap before they demand change.

Glad I got a sub the other month when it was on offer for £29.99.

I'll evaluate in a year's time if it's worth continuing or not.

we're well beyond demanding that. nintendo fans have an opportunity to change something on their platform since they've never been charged for online before, create petitions and stuff the same way everyone did to create the u-turn for MS. once you're in a subscription service though it's quite hard to back out cold turkey, especially one as deeply ingrained as PS+ or XBL, and that is ultimately the only option people have when it comes to them. what if you only own a PS4. what if you play online daily? are you just going to pack up your bags and leave over a £50 a year sub fee and go buy a £1000 PC to avoid it?

As long as Sony keeps giving good PS Plus months, 99 cents movie rentals, the insane deals and added extras such as the $15 bak if you spend a certain amount, I'll be happy supporting this infrastructure. I am also a huge online player, so I kind of don't have a choice lol.

Sony is up there with Steam with the awesome monthly game deals.

They gotta branch out though. If they implement refunds, 20% on pre-orders, and are more apparent with Rewards / cash back (not just put it in extreme small letters in the adds hoping no ones sees it), so that members can benefit thoroughly...then its going to be the best competitive service out there.

You bizarrely cut the part where I say that Sony likely incentivizes Plus exclusive discounts to tell me that Sony likely incentivizes Plus discounts.

Okay.

Console subscriptions are becoming much less attractive.

Edit: I remember the great PS3 days. PS+ was terrific. Loads of free games every month that were actually good. And it was fairly priced too. This generation continues to blow.
