Mr Plinkett reviews Ghostbusters (2016)

I was looking for another of his reviews to watch and only found Star Wars and Trek ones :( shame i wanted to watch another.

His Titanic and Crystal Skull reviews are absolutely worth a look, they seem more divisive than his Star Wars Ep 1-3 ones but I think they have some of his best critique+analysis.

The Star Trek '09 video is great too even if you're not a fan of the series.

he has a Titanic one and an Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull one as well

edit: what they said

his Titanic one is probably my favorite. he actually liked the movie so it's really interesting to see his take on why it worked.

Yeah, with their excuse being "no, no, we just wanted to have her eating something in that scene," I hear an implied "[didn't matter what she was eating, as long as we could collect some ad revenue from it]."

Yeah, they're 100% right when they say that shit like that doesn't get added to a film without going through a legion of lawyers. It was 100% calculated. It may have started out as an ad lib kind of thing, but to imply that it was spur of the moment is completely disingenuous.

And yeah, Sony's the worst about this. I can't remember where I saw it but it was a screenshot from some movie and it was a kid's bedroom and he had posters on his wall for Uncharted 4 and The Last Guardian and it's just like "Gee, I wonder who's behind this movie?"

Watched half of this last night. Can't argue Sony are terrible at making movies and Feige is a bit of a hack. Ghostbusters wasn't what I expected and I'm still flabbergasted they decided to do this as a reboot, then completely seal the deal by casting the original actors as totally different characters... why Feig WHY!?

Having said that... I enjoyed the movie. My girlfriend who really loves the original and thought she was going to hate this, absolutely loves it. I dunno, for all its faults it's not bad and has some kick ass moments. If it hadn't had that ridiculous Kevin character it could've been even better.

Sure I'd have loved a better script, far less forgettable ad-libbing and something more visually in line with the old films, but it's not terrible (like so many love to claim it is). It's a far more enjoyable watch than many modern comedy and action films for me personally, and the hate definitely was riled up because it's Ghsotbusters.. and because it's women Ghostbusters.

Edit: Just remembered he makes at least two explicit references to Melissa McCarthy being fat and says "fatso". I do like his comedic review style but didn't see the sarcasm or wit in the way he mentioned that (twice in the first half of the video that I've seen). Was it a joke? Seemed just like he was being a dick for no good reason in the way it came across. Totally unnecessary and harsh.

That's the upcoming Jumanji movie. Since the majority of the movie takes place in a video game jungle, they probably want to get as much product placement into the first act as they can.

I cannot really approve of them slamming Spy, Bridesmaids, and Freaks & Geeks. Though maybe that's supposed to be more Plinkett's character?
What? He liked spy and said bridesmaids was a good movie.
He even wishes Kristen Wiig would have worked on the Ghostbusters script.

He also likes Melissa McCarthy.

Biggest problem is the script and all the improve.

Hmm ok thanks Indiana Jones ahould be interesting to see next :p

Her weight is a source of comedy in these movies, it is like poor fart jokes and toilet humor etc. That's the point. Maybe if the writers and directors didn't do that and she wouldn't take those parts it wouldn't be as painful. He isn't fat shaming or hate overweight people. He also doesn't kill people in his basement or want to do the Olsen twins so I find it weird that you get offended first now.

Started watching it after a long hiatus on Red Letter Media and just kinda got bored.

I mean, it's just a terrible movie that has a lot of structure and writing problems. I don't see the reason on going on for an hour about it.

just like Star wars prequels then? I mean, the goal of this type of review is to break the movie piece by piece and explain why it didn't work, not to beat a dead horse.

Most people who hate those types of movies can't exactly define what is wrong with it outside of "it is boring" or "it is not funny". This type of review help to show in a more objective way what is wrong with the movie(even though this objectivity is hidden behind layers of irony and cynicism)

Anyway i liked the review and agreed with basically everything: Two hacks made an unecessary reboot for a company that will fund any crap hoping it sticks, all because Bill Murray spent the last 30 years cockblocking a so desired sequel.

I think the reason the 2016 Ghostbusters went super improv crazy was because it's widely believed/known that Bill Murray ad-libbed a lot of Venkman's dialogue in the original Ghostbusters. But it was only Murray doing ad-libbing, the rest of the cast stuck to the script, and Murray mostly ad-libbed in a way that stayed in character.

So basically Fieg missed the point

Movie was awful and an overly long SNL skit. I had high hopes and even watched it twice to see if it would grow on me but no, it's just awful.

Good review and I agree with it. Poor job keeping the actors to a script and poor job creating characters to root for and care about. I think that if they had done a better job with the characters, the movie would have been fine.

I was hoping to put this movie behind me. Haven't seen the review, but I honestly just found the movie just unfunny. Jokes stretched out too long and only 3 characters being likable. The villain was awful, the ending was awful, the fight scene was ok, but the ghost looks so bad to me.

One of the biggest problems with the film is that almost no-one feels like a real person. They've all got this "wacky zany" moments that make them more like caricatures than actual people.

Pattie is the only person in the film who seems like a normal human.

think I might double bill this review with the old movie this weekend. should be fun.

haven't seen it in its entirety in a while. always just catch it on cable mid-airing.

Critiquing something =/= hating or being vicious on something

People forget that RLM/Plinkett have critiqued stuff they've liked as well

They do a great job of backing their shit up. There is a reason the reviews are long. I agree that there is a lot of vicious random hating on the internet but when you look past the silly presentation there are some good points in these reviews.

My God. Do we ever love hating things these days. How did nerd culture become so vicious?

And the alternative is what? being corporate shills like Collider that will praise everything geek related because "it has star wars in it! of course we gonna like it"

They literally said that once

Besides is not like RLM is the polar opposite. They criticize what they don't like, yes, but it is not like they hate everything.(they like most marvel movies,EP7 and Wonder Woman for instance)

This "Woe is nerd culture! How do we live with such hate?" tack is more cringeworthy than any sincere meltdowns on either "side" about the terrible Ghostbusters movie.

There’s also no one really on the level of Murrayin movies today (well, except Murray) who can ad lib IN CHARACTER.

He’s a legend and rightfully so.

The cast of the 2016 Ghostbusters consisted of extremely talented and capable and fucking funny women. But the whole thing, the script, the premise, the director, the sfx, the fucking racist shit they pulled with Jones‘ character, it all made that movie so far worse than it should have been. It’s a shame, really.

I haven't seen the movie, but did watch this and their Half in the Bag review.

They are very clearly criticizing the movie for resorting to crass & cheap humor, including fat jokes, instead of being a more restrained/cerebral type of comedy. In the other review, they wonder on why the movie was defended as being a positive force, when the film includes denigrating elements like that (Paul Blart and Adam Sandler's typical movies were lumped into that, as well).

Nothing new. Like, just one random example, criticism of F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby from 1925:

There may be those who like to read him. But why he should be called an author, or why any of us should behave as If he were, has never been explained satisfactorily to me.

Hardly different from saying "Feig is a hack who doesn't know what he's doing."

Because somehow, at some point, unabridged criticism became "cool". It's far cooler to hate and deride something than just enjoy it on its own merits.

And I'll add, people have become so concerned with other people's regards of their online persona...

You must have a limited understanding of film writing and criticism if you think longform structure for a review is a new, cool thing.

True and redlettermedia isn't guilty of that.

Wanna see terrible nerd hate just visit the million Nolan and Batman threads on gaf or watch that YouTube guy that has a stopwatch and lists 1000 problems with a movie that don't make any sense and is more useless than Sony in the movie industry.

This falls apart when you watch something and don't enjoy it, and you happen to know why you don't enjoy it.

Not everyone has to like everything. If that was the case, everything would be boring since nothing new would be made since everyone likes everything without criticism to makes things better.

RLM themselves are totally fine. Their fans, not quite. Or maybe it's just YouTube that sucks idk :p

I'm gonna need to see some statistics on this. There are plenty of movies (TV shows, video games, books, music) that DON'T have multiple takedown videos about how terrible they are, which are in fact enjoyed on their own merits. You're just not thinking about them because they come and go so often that you forget about them, since no high emotion is associated with them.

So much media is being produced that something historically bad comes out every week. You're just not focusing on the 100 good or middling things that come out the same week.

agreed.

the review isn't random shit. its all backed up properly. It doesn't make GB2016 look bad. The movie does plenty to do so by itself. I really loathed it.

I'd forgotten the queffing joke in GB2016. They're right "this is meant to be funny?".

Is this the case of this review though? Besides the Plinket characterization, the video didn't spent an hour saying "GB2016 sucks,am i right?!11"

It actually went in depth explain what didn't work and why,it also pointed out questionable "writing" decisions like the fact that everybody is always talking loudly at the same time and ad-libing because reason?!

Redlettermedia fans are fine, go to reddit and you'd see the grand majority are just posting red letter media memes.

YouTube on the other hand regardless of show has turned into shit. Go to Rick and morty videos from season 3 where people are complaining the show hiring more women to write is god awful.

LOL at judging a fanbase by youtube comments. If you have a problem with RLM fans how about you directly criticize the ones in this very thread. There are plenty.

This reasoning falls apart when you realize some people DO enjoy thing you don't like. Like Valerian or whatever. People RARELY post "I just didn't enjoy it" versus "It's complete shit. Hate." If a majority of your posts are critical, not complimentary maybe take a step back. Think about why you're posting in the first place.
