Sonic Mania |OT| Dreams Come True

Got the game downloaded on Switch, excited to play it, was a big fan of the first 3 titles+S&K as a kid, even enjoyed 3D blast on a rental from Blockbuster. Ready to take a trip through memory lane.

I'm on vacation but the time zone is 3 hours before PST so I still got time tonight before it gets too late to give it a go.

Still remember when my parents surprised me with a Genesis and Sonic 2, getting to play as Super Sonic and feeling like a badass. :)

3d blast was total garbage, ruined my thumbs with that game lol.

that puzzling face
Any hint for the third chaos emerald? I can't fucking get it, by the time i reach mach 3, the UFO is so far that i can't see it anymore, and i always ran out of time!

also what happen if i get them all with knuckles instead of sonic?

The special stages definitely require learning the mechanics. It's like a racing game with no rubberband AI (thank god) although it feels like the UFO does get significantly faster, albeit outpaced by Sonic's own increase, as you go up Mach levels. In other words, even when initially collecting the blue spheres for Mach speed you don't want to be making mistakes and losing time since that translates into how much you have to catch up.

Typical racing game skillsets like learning the maps, understanding the turn radius and handling (you can turn sharper by jumping) and simply messing up by hitting mines or bumpers as little as possible.

If they get frustrating, the best advice I have is to clear the game then use the clear save to practice since the big rings respawn and you can pick a zone with a quickly-accessible one (or more)

Otherwise I'm sure video guides will eventually go up on YouTube.

Does anyone know how much this costs on Switch in the UK? And good impressions I take it for the Switch version?

Is it £15.99 ?

It's £15.99, yes.

But change your acount to Russia, use your normal card, and you'll get it for just over £9 instead. Then switch your account back to UK.

Does this have any impact on re-downloading? Would I have to go back to the Russian store to re-download in the future?

This is the second time now that I can't get past Chemical Plant Zone 2 because of a bug.

I beat
Robotnik in Puyo Puyo,
what am I supposed to do to get out of the Puyo Puyo Stage? If I jump up to the right, the bug will occur where I get stuck.

Shouldn't you just jump out of the machine automatically? I think I did.

Nope, it's tied to your main account.

Welp, I just encountered a bug where I'm stuck in the spinning animation in a tube-y area. I took a screenshot, guess I'm gonna have to restart the level though.

Nope. It's a universal app, so it's tied to your account regardless of region. You can re-download on your UK one just fine in future if you decide to delete it.

Nope, he jumped, but didn't get out of there automatically.

Doesn't matter now, I got out. I tried jumping straight up or to the left and eventually I got out.

I just have avoid jumping right since that would trigger the bug.

Hit a string of ridiculous insta-deaths in Chemical Plant Act 1 with the boosters shooting me right into the moving blocks and crushing me that I'm pretty sure never happened back in the day. Either I suck now, or that part is a little sketchy.

Yeah, this took a couple of lives from me, it seems Sonic gets squished between a pixel here and there where the boost kind of doesn't help, you have to force yourself to slow down a bit. Only problem I've had so far, just gotten to Press Garden.

Loving this game so much so far, done a few blue sphere stages but not "perfect", just rushed them to get all the blues before it got too fast. Does a perfect give extra rewards?

Anyone else having problems with the Switch Home screen not working while the game is paused, and randomly at other times?

I'm playing in handheld mode.

Kind of? It takes three or four pushes on the Sleep Mode button before it responds and lets the console rest when I pause it and open the quick menu.

Bugs and niggles aside, definitely a GOTY contender for me. At this point I'm actually kind of torn between this and Breath of the Wild... 2017 is going to be remembered as a legendary gaming year like 1997!

This happened to me. I just kept jumping around until I got so stuck that I couldn't even move, then I gave up and let it run for about a minute while looking for a solution. It then randomly fixed itself and completed the level.

What platform are you bug-seers on? I'm on PS4 and don't recall seeing a single notable bug in my playthrough - the impression I've gotten is that most of the bugs seem Switch-specific.

Which other Switch-specific bugs other than the home screen button bug?

Aye the bugs are obvious on my Switch too.

Haven't been able to see the animated intro and have that home button bug too. Think I couldn't spot a level transition but not sure if that was intentional.

Despite that...think I'm going to agree with Gamespot at this rate. They've made Stardust Speedway so fun. Fucking Stardust Speedway.

I've gotten multiple bugs on the PS4 version. Nothing game breaking but from music cutting off and falling silent to Tails dying and not respawning (RIP Tails)

Crikey, so should I always be buying from the Russian store? are their any risks? I'm digital only these days,

Really? When you start the game and it says "Press any button" - don't press anything and wait for about 5-10 seconds. Doesn't that work?

Switch version if anyone feels different about this.

I think the
Special Stages speed up too fast. I feel like I'm at max speed 30% in and then I'm just scouring for where to go next on these things.
I haven't run into
any Emerald stages yet, however.

I saw the animated intro by letting the title screen idle, but maybe I'm supposed to see it when the game starts? Given the glitches I saw other people have, I'd say this version needs a patch...or 2. It needs it.

I only beat the first zone, but it's okay so far. Can't really judge it because...first zone is first zone

Yeah it was 15.99 iirc. Plays great in portable more, I've only had time to cheekily play the first couple of zones today though

Got the Switch version as well. It seems the special stage ramps up the speed suddenly. Also in some levels I am experiencing noticeable frame drops... The game is still great, love it but there are some odd things here and there.

Oh and the music is excellent.

They could just block foreign bank cards from working in Russian eShop like how most people here can't use their foreign bank cards to buy stuff from Japan eShop unless they live in a place that doesn't have official eShop presence.

Certainly always worth checking first and comparing the price. I'm not sure everything is that much cheaper, but never hurts to have a look first. Right now, our cards work, so have at it.

All but 1 of the gold medals acquired. I can not, for the life of me, figure out this last bonus stage. It's driving me crazy. The answer is probably super simple too

Guys, I just unlocked the
Sonic CD Peel out
.

How do I use it lol?

Also, trying to access the leaderboards in Time Attack crashes the game :S

You have to hover over "No Save" and press the corresponding button for "Secrets". You can only use it in no save mode.

Also, to those wondering, there is in fact a bug in Chemical Plant where sometimes if you win the boss battle, the game will still kill you. I experienced this my first time on PS4.

So at least we know it's not Switch specific.

What are you supposed to do in Zone 9
aka. Oil Ocean act 2 boss?
I got there, the boss just crushed me twice without bothering to really explain how to dodge it properly, and then proceeding to "lol game over, better play 20 minutes of this zone to just reach this point to lose again!"

You just
attack the octopus monster.
but I don’t recall any crushing mechanics in the act 2 boss.
If you mean act 1
the center two green jumping platforms will not crush you.

I'm through half the zones now and this game is living up to and surpassing my expectations. I think this is the best Sonic game! All the inventive level design ideas, plus the incredible music, controls, and great nostalgia moments (Chemical Plant 2 boss, Stardust Speedway) made the last 2 hours the most fun I have had with a Sonic game in a very long time.

Also the pixel art and animation in this game is blowing my fucking mind! Bravo to the devs for sticking with it because it certainly doesn't look like it came cheap. This game probably has the best looking sprites ever.

I am just as terrible at this game as I was at the original 2D Sonic games, so in that respect it really is like a new old one of those! Still even with the high number of "Game Over" screens I've gotten, I'm having a great time with this. Congrats on the great work to all those involved!

There's bugs for sure in the game, not just on the switch. In every version. I experienced 3-4 during my first playthrough. None of them game breaking, but still something to draw concern.

DAMN!
Chemical Plant Zone Act 2 was amazing, the level design legitimately floored me.
The super bouncy green jello.
Those teleporter things.
That funky ass remix with the synth-y organ.
Dat goddamn
puyo-puyo/Mean Bean Machine boss battle!
That caught me by complete surprise, no joke.
It was glorious.
Also, I really really LOVED
Press Garden Zone
. The music is amazing, theming is so unique, and I liked that boss battle with the
ninja Hard-Boiled Heavy
.

Man...I think Christian Whitehead and Co. definitely nailed this one, it really does feel like a game made by folks who actually love and respect Sonic's roots.

God this fucking game, it just makes me mad that Team Sonic couldn't give us this for 23 fucking years, and it took people who literally were born into the Sonic community to make a real sonic game.

Like, what the fuck man.
I know, right?

Sonic Team just...lost the plot, they completely lost the plot back in the late 90s.

Not sure if this was covered already: do we know if there are any differences between the console versions? (Frame rate, features etc.)?

Maybe not a popular opinion... but I found all the bosses too easy. Except one...

Metal Sonic... Fucks sake he pissed me off so much. I died on him more than 5 times just to restart the whoooole damn boss battle over. Fuck Metal Sonic.
