Engadget: Cuphead is as wondrous as it is difficult

This is why many devs feel the need to over-tutorialize in their games. This is the type of player they're dealing with sometimes.

I was in the camp where I felt like obsessive hand holding early on in games was over the top but I realize now how wrong I was. I'm embarrassed for his family and friends.

I'm worried the difficulty of this game will really hurt both its mass appeal and it's metacritic score.

Plenty of hard games do well these days. Even Super Meat Boy did amazing on the 360 didn't it?

As for metacritic scores, I feel the kind of person who would be into Cuphead would be smart enough to not blindly follow numbers. That said I think it'll be around 79-82ish, which is a pretty good score.

Speaking as a dev.

Yup. And if we want to make any real amount of money at all, sometimes catering to this type of player is the safest way to do it.

His defense of his lack of skill is a perfect example of what I always say too, that players will reach as far as they can to find fault with the game or its designers before they even consider finding fault with their own skills or intellect.

Nah, you aren't wrong and I feel the same way. Over-tutorialization almost always hurts a game. But I can understand why devs are so hesitant to leave them out and it's because of stuff like this. That video was painful and it was played by someone who has been in this industry forever.

There's really no hope for someone who refuses to pay attention to literally all feedback the game is giving them.

If you can't understand that getting on a smaller object to get over a larger object then you should find a new hobby/profession.

If you dont get that you need to jump on that other rock within 5 seconds after playing many games. I dont know what to say haha.

The footage may be rough, but consider the environment and limitation of time and such. Playing at a convention isn't always the best environment to capture quality footage due to various limitations - like limited time with the game or just a sense of pressure to get high quality footage. I'm sure under normal circumstance a video of such play quality wouldn't be published, but in this instance they felt it was worth publishing as the game is nearing launch and this is new footage.

Again, just because you are in the game industry doesn't mean you are an expert gamer of a high skill level. Everyone has skills of varying degrees. I'm sure we'll see better footage come closer to launch once people have more time to play the game and get familiar with its play style, controls, and other mechanics.

Whenever I publish game footage, I try to devote time to the game before doing so. Sometimes that isn't an option when at media events and some outlets will ask the representative on site to play to ensure a quality gameplay video.

I actually had to fast forward because I was sick of the idiot trying the same thing over and over again and wanted to see how long it took him to figure it out. I was practically yelling at the screen after about 30 seconds.

Sorry but you can't justify jumping over a minute against that pillar when the tutorial made it clear enough that you needed to get on the small rock and dash, with arrows even

This isn't some greenhorn playing games for the first time, it's a game journalist with over 15yr of experience according to himself. And then he even felt like he was still right and the game wrong when he defended himself on twitter.

Oh, I don't expect game journalists to be expert players and I certainly can understand that recording in a loud, busy, public environment isn't going to produce quality gameplay in many cases.

But c'mon. That video was so beyond bad.

They did at least present the video in an accurate manner by saying it was a shameful display on Dean's part.

It did look like he never held an Xbox One controller before. I just hate to shame a person on skill level.

...oh...the game runs at 60fps?

This is, weirdly enough, the one time I wish it was 30. The mismatch of fluid sprite movement to the sprite animation looks visually odd. But I'm sure the 60 makes it more responsive to play. Can't wait for the Steam release.

even if they make all of the animations and movements of sprites run at 24 or 30, it's still best for the game itself to run at 60+ to avoid awful judder in the side-scrolling

That was an edit. First title was just saying "cuphead was hard". They changed it after the backlash

Gotcha. At least now they are poking fun at it along with everyone else instead of pulling the video. I guess one takeaway from this is that people that watched the video won't make the same follies when they play the game later this month.

Dean had the same thing happen to him 10 years ago. He gave Mass Effect 1 a bad review saying the combat was too difficult and monotonous because as his readers pointed out: He forgot to assign skill points. He had to amend his review:

"Hey guys, I need to amend my Super Mario World review. Readers rightfully pointed out that I had failed to use the game's jump mechanic".

oh what was that... Like why did you have to talk to Mat like 3 times, and why are you doing the opposite of run and gun.. also wasn't there a lock mechanic? I laughed a lot... Although I wonder how people would react to my Ori death count...yea

If You're expecting Mario LOL

Who is expecting Mario? I would atleast say megaman, or contra, or metal slug.

Mario lol

smh. If he put that in the review. MAJOR L

Not sure if someone saw this, but.
Gameplay from Dean Takahashi of GamesBeat, it seems. Yes, video game journalist.

2/10 stupid game

Watching the first minute of the video with that struggle just to jump dash over the second obstacle was painful.

Hope reviews of Cuphead are fair in regards to its difficulty. Would be awful for people to miss out on the game due to reviews stating the game is unfair/too hard.

Easy_D

never left the stone age
That's unnecessarily bad play. Just legit running directly into enemies.

He has to be playing like shit on purpose, right? How do you not get that you jump up on the left pillar and airdash to the second one?????

Edit: It took the man 90 full seconds to cross the very fist tutorial step.

That video and the response he posted are infuriating. It has nothing to do with being a "master or an expert." It's about learning the language of video games after spending a fucking decade writing about them. That tutorial, as someone that plays video games, is something you should just do. Something repeated in dozens of other modern platformers (off the top of my head , I know for a fact it's a concept you see in both Spelunky and Ori). Something resigned to muscle memory. I absolutely hate these inclusivity arguments. I don't think you need to be great at video games to cover them but at least engage them, Jesus.

On twitter he said he had fun so..... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And that's a good takeaway. He may have struggled but he enjoyed it. Being bad at a game doesn't mean the player hates it.

Once he has the full game in hand he will learn more and adjust. I look forward to reviewing Cuphead and I have yet to play even a demo of it.

It's like watching someone trying to review a movie but taking an hour to get the DVD in the player the right way up. Long time since I've seen such a lack of basic competence and common sense in anything. Jesus.
