Project CARS 2 discussion thread (provisional release date: Septemberish 2017)

Shadowhaxor has review code with the D1P though, so it's probably a little more than speculation.

I *think* all the console resolution/framerate/HDR variables were clarified in the Q&A on GTP recently (or in one of the other threads there). I didn't pay much attention though so can't really comment.

I highly doubt Shadowhaxor has review code for the Xbox One X version, which is what I was talking about :)

I think he was talking specifically about what the X1X does, although, I'd be surprised if it does much more than the pro version does though?

A few quotes from this article on Gamespot about the X1X version - https://www.gamespot.com/articles/project-cars-2-dev-impressed-with-xbox-one-x/1100-6452910/

Project Cars 2 developer Slightly Mad Studios is "impressed" with the Xbox One X hardware, COO Rod Chong said in a new interview. The Xbox One X version of the simulation racing game will have "enhancements," but Chong said he wasn't ready to get into specifics about those because the studio is still benchmarking.

"Unfortunately, I can't tell you that much right now because we are benchmarking as we speak," he told us. "We are impressed with the hardware but right now we are benchmarking. There will obviously be enhancements, but we are not ready to showcase exactly what those are yet. Other than it must be 60 frames per second or death."

Project Cars 2 game director Stephen Viljoen recently said Project Cars 2 for Xbox One X will look "significantly better" than the PS4 Pro edition. "I can't tell you exactly what all the various sliders will be at when you're on Xbox One X versus on PS4 Pro, but obviously they'll be higher [on Xbox One X], so there will be a significant, a noticeable improvement, because you have better hardware," Viljoen said.

That 60 or death comment had a bit of controversy within WMD. So, take that with a grain of salt. I'm pretty sure every version, sans PC with proper hardware/configuration, will have drops under some circumstances.

Controversy in what way, people thinking X1X hardware couldn't do it?

No, nothing hardware related. The aim by SMS is not hittings 60fps in all ciscumstances, but to hit it in most circumstances.

Case in point: I have a 1060 6GB and I have everything maxed out except EnvMap (high), and AA (med). In thunderstorm conditions, in the grid start, I'm at 55~ and in some crahes with 15+ cars on the screen, I can dip to 50~. Should I lower my settings because in these situations the game goes below 60fps? I don't think so. The same way, if 95% (made up number by me) the game runs at 60fps, I don't think they should lower the settings to get perfect performance in that other 5%, as long as we are not talking about a tank below 30fps or something below 45 that lasts long enough.

Different opinions in this topic. I think is prefereable to change whatever you need to have locked 60 fps in every condition. If I was in that dev situation, I will create a dynamic LOD settings that lower the quality in cars models when more than some number is on screen, for example in grid start. Or change shadow resolution or distance just a split of a second before a crash to free up some cpu resources, or whatever other rule that means I can achieve locked 60 fps only lowering graphics in that 5% you said while leaving untouched the 95% that is already perfect.

I don't think it is different opinions but different situations. Probably the devs would love to have the resources to give AAA exclusive treatment to their game for every platform, but I think what you suggest, while great, is out of scope for a multiplatform title from an independent studio making a sim racing game.

Has anyone got an album of high quality screenshots they can send me for the OT?

They ended the beta access and I didn't take nearly enough screenshots.

In particular I would like some screenshots from interiors of some of the road cars from the driving view position since I don't have any of those.

Not giving the first fuck about trophies or achievements any more is incredibly liberating.

No, good trophies in racing games are great. If I really like a racing game and it has some hard, clever single player trophies? Super fun.

Got my 100% trophy list in GT6 including Senna DLC 4 years after I bought it. (edit: actually more like 3.3)

Still, I definitely don't care enough to buy it on console just for trophies and - just as everyone else - I don't care at all for Steam Achievements. Also... there are multiplayer trophies in pCARS2, so I couldn't care for Platinum anymore anyway. MP trophies should always be optional for getting a Platinum, except if the game is more or less nothing but MP.

Just invent your own then.

Masochist: drive for three days straight while sitting on barbed wire and squirting lemon juice in your eyes.

I can't believe we are getting a sequel to this so soon...

It's almost two and a half years.. Hardly soon.

Assetto Corsa has a bunch of achievements based on certain scenarios, at least on PC. That kind of thing is pretty fun, gives you an excuse to use certain car/track combos. I haven't bothered doing any of them yet myself but the idea is pretty cool.

Just invent your own then.

That reminded me of this thing from May 2015 - super early Project CARS 1 days:
Anyone fancy a challenge? You'll need the LE car pack though.

McLaren F1, all assists off, preferably using a gamepad, Silverstone National Circuit, Rain.

Try as I might, I can't get under one minute, hitting around 1:00.5, just wanted to see if anyone else can do it!!!
Best I could do with a wheel on Xbox One was a high 1:02.5 back then.

Just tried it again:

It's still a really fun challenge! I probably got better at racing compared to back then, but me being on PC now, a million changes to the tire model since those early pCARS1 days as well as my better FFB config all add to making it easier now I guess.
Still fun though, I'll definitely repeat this challenge in pCARS2. Such a cool track/car/weather combo in that game.

So I am pretty dumb about pc games these days, but I just got a new pc for other reasons, but may be better than the ps4 pro to run this game? i7 7700, 1070ti and 16gb ram? none of my ps4 friends will play it anyway? I have a T150 wheel.

Maybe we should resurrect the weekly hotlap challenges from the early PC1 days?

You probably meant 1070 not 1070ti, right? Either way, the difference from your PC to your PS4 Pro is bigger than from PS4 to XB1 percentage wise. And pCARS1 was very cpu bottlenecked and you CPU is super kick-ass, while the PS4's CPU is absolute worst thing about that console.

It should run the game significantly better.

Even reading that makes my palms sweat. A clean lap in under 8 minutes is intense enough as it is, but in the snow? Yikes.
They have the car Stefan Bellof ran a 6:11 around the Nordschleife in the game though (and snow looked super unrealistically grippy so far, SMS said they'll make it more slippery, but I don't think it'll be by much).

Let's see how pCARS2's legs are going to be.
For the first 3 weeks or so, these unofficial challenges like "you guys have to try this car track combo, I did a x:xx.xxx" are better in my opinion, until people got settled in... and they're the most fun if more than 30% of gaffers still can beat it. Some Driveclub challenges were really just "I don't know how I did this one lap, I will never beat this time again, my friends won't either so let's send them the challenge". These "go under" challenges are there to be broken, not to boast about something.

Thanks for the response, I may need to install steam and get it there then.

i'm hoping xbox S version has HDR that's as good as FH3. that would hold me over until xBX comes out and we see what else they add

Of course, I never preorder.

But I'm waiting for simracers opinions more that mainstream reviews, as in case of simracing I don't value reviews too much.

Ditto.

I've still got absolutely no idea about the season pass pre-order bonuses though, and whether you'd still get them if you pick the season pass up at a later date (like, when you actually know if you want anything in the season pass....).

Seems nobody at SMS or Bandai Namco know either.

There's no Switch version. Never was and I dare to say never will.

I don't know how these Switch expectations ever started, TBH.

Well when they cancelled the Wii u version of the previous game, they said "maybe Nintendo's next console".
That was for PC1 cancellation. PC2 never was in the plans and, honestly, neither was PC1; that's the generic response for "we are not doing it but don't want to be so clear just in case".

Yeah, the "maybe" part is the important one, sadly...Would insta-buy a decent racing game for the Switch.

Are there no decent racing games on the Switch? Caveat: I know nothing about the Switch.

Edit: try asking Ian directly in the GTP Q&A. He's been pretty forthright with his answers.

Sounds like quite a common ethos in SMS!

Turn 10 are still the grandmasters of this. I swear their whole HQ is constructed entirely from smoke and mirrors.

Yup, fair point!

Nope, and I do not see Mario Kart as a racing game.
Try to beat all the dev time trial times to get the golden tires, it's actually a pretty fantastic racing game minus the item drops. It's just an arcade racing game, but the rules about how to take corners efficiently absolutely apply to that game (well, the drift boost changes this a bit, but still...).
