The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

Weren't you around during the Wii speculation?

I can't find too many examples right now, but threads like this made Wii seem much more powerful than it actually was.
Did you read that thread? Most people said 2-3x the GC. That is the Wii exactly.
As for the Wii U, we have plenty of evidence and reports that it is far more capable than the 360/PS3.

By the way Mr. Harker, I've gotten the impression in numerous threads that you're rather optimistic about the Wii U, at least for its launch. Would that be an accurate estimation?

It is the speculation thread. If someone said they saw the Wii U next to a donut there will be 50 pages of people arguing if the Wii U was on par with the donut or not..

Oh, shit, there's a donut???

The Wii wasn't 2-3x the GC. Its components were handwavily around 50% faster.

All I know is, the hardware in the PS4 and Xbox 3 could completely eclipse Wii U by a factor of ten but it wouldn't amount to a hill of beans unless and until game developers can make the difference apparent. Expecting tons of CGI-esque next gen games is also expecting publishers to foot the bill for those endeavors. That's quite a tall order, and more than a little risky for unproven platforms in this economy. I think that the expectations of some of the more rabid MS and Sony fans for their next gen games are what need to be tapered - especially if they're expecting lots of them in quick succession. Nintendo fanboys on the other hand are by and large saying the level of graphics of Zelda HD and the bird demo from last E3 are what they expect, and that doesn't appear to be all that unrealistic, imo.
Naaaaaw.. we're all crazy, unrealistic, out-of-touch eleven-year-olds who haven't been following the industry that long and who have insanely impossible hopes for the next Nintendo home console. Right? :)

Fair enough. Maybe 'Mr. Sarcasm' will suffice!
I call dibbs on 'Mr Jaded!'

Nope. They don't run DX11 features.

The DX9 version of the same video is pretty good some good improvements over other engines but yeah there would have to be major cutbacks for ps3 and xbox 360 and not just in resolution.

For WiiU however, going from the ~1TFLOP class (2008 standards) It should have no trouble running the demo with all settings turned on for the most part with DX11 level style open GL effects at 30fps

that demo was able to run it on a GTX480 at 30fps on DX11 at 1920x1080 with all effects so and a GTX 480 is about the same as a HD7850 in performance on that engine.

a 7850 is about 1.76TFLOPS (2012 standards) something around half that power would be the same as a 1TFLOP class card by 2008 standards and what would be perfect for WiiU to run the same engine at 720p 30fps with no downgrades except resolution.

This is how I see next gen using the HD7000 series as a barometer

WiiU HD7670@32nm (the turks based card is currently at 40nm 800GFLOP)
Orbis HD7850 Standard
Durango HD7850 Underclocked 10%

These cards are by 2005 architecture standards 5x and 10x the power of the xbox 360GPU at 240GFLOPS (2005 standards). The orbis and the Durango will likely get 1080p ports at 30fps while the WiiU will get 720p ports for single player multiplatform games without too much stress on the tablet itself. Having this scenario will ensure all three have an equal chance of sucess with their respective philosophies and and strategies for the next generation.

I'm thinking:

Mario
Pikmin 3
Arkham City
Madden 13
AC3

And then one of the presumed big FPS: Killer Freaks, BLOPs 2 or 007 Legends.

Ugh, and that's not including games we have no idea about. It's going to be an expensive launch...
Which is why I'm saving up now, already have $140.

I hope they don't reveal them all in montage (is that right word?) form like that, though. I would love surprises paced well throughout the presentation. Honestly, a video like that shouldn't be hard for them to pull off. We already know a good amount of third party games that are coming, and we know next to nothing about Nintendo's offering outside of Smash, Mario, and Pikmin. I think this E3 is going to be very good for games.

Lol basically said the opposite of me.

Oh no believe me I don't want everything announced in the reel, especially not first party games. But ideally (imo, at least) Nintendo would start with a reel like this which shows the updated controller, strong third party support, and a bunch of first party games (I would guess Pikmin 3, Good Feel's game, a 'Wii' game etc.). This would be followed by an on-stage demo of the "Wii Sports equivalent", as this would be positioned as the big seller, possibly even a pack in. Then, out of the blue, a demo for Retro's game (a new IP), announced for launch. After this the rest of the conference would be NiN, the OS and other hardware details, 15 minutes on 3DS stuff (probably not dissimilar to this, except the games being LM 2, NSMB. 2, AC 3DS, Paper Mario, and new announcements of Donkey Kong 3D Land by NST and finally Zelda 3DS). The conference would then wind to a close with a couple more first party Wii U trailers, these being 2013 or later games, such as Eternal Darkness 2, another Project M Metroid or a different big third party collaboration on an established first party IP, and finally I strongly believe the conference will end with an announcement trailer for the next 3D Mario, releasing at some point in 2013.

That's how I see the conference going, or something along those lines anyway...

We also have conflicting evidence saying its on par (and even if it ends up being 2-3x 360, we'll probably have another Wii situation where games look and play the exact same).

You cannot say with 100% certainty that the WiiU will be a noticeable jump over PS360. You're going off of rumors, nothing official.

Again, maybe that's just me being pessimistic, but its a valid viewpoint nonetheless.

Excuse me sir, but can you explain this? :/

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.

Oh yeah, I remember those estimates now. In hindsight, I'd say it was 50% better than Gamecube, at the very most.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Says the hit and run teaser.
:p

Yea well, I've been here for over 7 years, have I ever once taunted people or played with news because it was 'fun'? I have far too much respect for the industry, my career, and that of my friends' jobs. I think what's going on here is kind of rude, obnoxious, and not fair to people who generally are excited about an upcoming product announcement.

Just tell us how many giggleflops the Wii U does, come on we're dying here.

well i'm glad your optimistic in a trainwreck of a thread
Thanks, but I normally get called relentlessly pessimistic. I like to think that I have reasonable expectations and that Nintendo will exceed them. They deserve criticism in a lot of areas, but many people seem to be oblivious to (or unwilling to admit) all the things they do much better than the competition.

Also, did you know something when you called me out for calling that Blockbuster list fake?

teasing people is not a new concept, teasing people about something they don't have access to, well its classic

I GOT SOME ICE CREAM...

I'll add another vote in support of IdeaMan's nonsense being stopped.

It's essentially "Hey, there are new dev kits. Oh, and they're different than the ones prior."

NO WAI.

And teasing that you know something more, without actually saying it, is ridiculous. I don't know if he's on a power trip, or if he's just being unintentionally annoying.

I agree. The dude should have just come out and said "Hey, the developer I have contacts with just got final wii u kits. I'll let you know more if and when I learn more."

I sort of agree with John Harker about IdeaMan's posts. I'm in the camp that if you know something and want to tell people, then do it. Stringing people along is just showboating in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I like IdeaMan and have no problems with him in general, but in this situation, he isn't handling it in a good way. I do think he should keep his mouth closed to protect his sources. My game dev friends tell me things all the time, but I don't go around flaunting that fact or even hinting that I know stuff. It's not my place to give that information.

It's nice to see a well respected Gaffer with established industry connections call out IdeaMan so eloquently and precisely. The insufferable "WELL OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVE PROBLEMS TO BE SO OBSESSED WITH ME" retort he pulls out at any criticism of his methods won't work so well this time.

I think after E3, leakers should stop teasing and drop the bomb on us :D

Well, I don't think the leaks will mean nearly as much after E3. We'll probably know about a good amount of them besides the specs which I doubt will be AS important after we see some of the 1st party games.

Most of the stuff people are holding on to are things that really aren't THAT important but they want us to think it's really important because we don't know anything, which is kind of annoying. "There's something that's new in this dev kit that's cool but it's not that cool."

IdeaMan sounds like he's holding onto something solid, but of course we'll have to wait and see.
Sooner rather than later, hopefully.

No, I think he just sincerely believes he's being fun and stimulating and that we should be grateful for it.

Has he ever said anything of real value?

"There are dev kits out there, and they have big graphics and stuff"

Thanks, IdeaMan.
He said there was a lot of RAM dedicated to the OS.
He also said the system will have at least 1GB of main RAM, iirc.
And uh...that's about it I think.

Well, if it is indeed practice to have final dev kits ready only a couple of months before launch, than that info is useful to winnowing down the launch window.

But hark, this sentence betrays itself!

;)

IdeaMan just told us that the V5 devkits are the first to be marked as "mass produced" and therefore should be considered the final devkits. They were delayed by about a month, giving devs just a few short weeks to get their game working on final hardware for E3. That was his info. Anything past that could just be filtered out as innocuous fluff if you don't wish to hear it.
