My source is my ass!
My fervent hope is that the uPad will help break this barrier. It might be just the thing that Nintendo needs to catch fire in Japan's home console market again.

Yeah they acknowledged since a few years now this new (and which is partly diverting a huge portion of people from "classic video game consumption") trend, and it's certain this factor came into play during design of the system/controller. But they really need a good online mode and above all, content for it.

The first mention I remember was at the end of March where someone from EA said Nintendo might be showing the console at E3.
Looking through the Go Nintendo news archives (click on the Wii tag), I can see that the stories really started to take-off about a month before E3. Magazine reveals, websites confirming games, interviews, etc.

Seems like Nintendo is very, very tight-lipped in comparison this time around. Not that I mind too much.

Quick question. Do we know of any sites that have confirmed they'll be streaming E3 or at least Nintendo's conference?

This is a cut and paste from last year's E3 Nintendo conference livestream thread:

Not sure how much it's changed.

I'm pretty sure that most will have a stream going for all three of the conferences. For Nintendo's conference, just use e3.nintendo.com since it's the best quality stream.

Just got new, upgraded internet service this morning. Not sure how I'm liking it. It's supposed to be quicker than the old stuff. I figure, between the Wii U and E3 (and more online video consumption), it's worth the extra 5 bucks..

On another note.. I work-up this morning, and the first thing on my mind: "Hmm.. I wonder what the final secret ba-bomb is going to be?"

I honestly hope it's Retro's game and that it will blow us away. Either that or Eminem rapping to a Zelda tune.

i would prefer Jimmy Fallon over Em. at least Jimmy is known for his love of Nintendo let alone video games.

Howabout no celebrities? Just show the games in a trailer or have someone from the dev team come out and do a live demo. Those videos of celebrities or random people playing games and smiling creepily are by far the worst way to hype games.

That's exactly what im suggesting. External hard drives but give the user the option to connect them to the WiiU with a more adequate connection than USB 2.0.

What a really incredible strange answer. But isn't Nintendo in a worst position than Sony now in terms of online infra structure? Sony has been working and investing far more resources in its network for a longer time, more than Nintendo ever has. So i really don't understand how your comparison fits in this puzzle. Can't believe we are actually tacking about this :) Do you remember the guy was asking for parity? You remember that key part, right?

You are mistaken :) The USB 2.0 never reaches 480 mbps throughput in real scenarios. The speeds are not close. This is a fact. In real world situations the difference between an eSATA and USB 2.0 are closde to 2.5 to 3 times in favor of the eSATA.
I had the oportunity to test this myself.

I don't even know how we could be arguing about this issue and offering advantages (at cheap cost) to the user. Bizarro universe indeed.

First, What my point was, is that Nintendo is in a better position to catch up to Sony and Microsoft now, then Sony was to catch up to Microsoft 6 years ago, which they did 3 or 4 years ago in the most important ways, so online is actually sounding pretty good for Nintendo, maybe in fall they will still be behind, but within the next two years, they should clearly surpass them, and that tablet is going to be nice to surf with.

Second, we are comparing 360's storage options to USB 2.0, so lets just look at a benchmark... http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-storage-update-the-flash-factor-article?page=3 in the last graph there, we can see that stage loading from USB 2.0 is actually faster than installs on the hard drive, this is in part thanks to flash, but proves that bandwidth isn't the only factor... hard drives are just sort of FAR behind in tech.

I agree that I wish they had USB 3.0, I don't really want Sata because I already have an external USB 3.0 2TB drive, but if they offered Sata, they would still have USB 2.0, so that is fine I guess, though it makes no difference to me.

Basically I think you work for Microsoft and your job is to complain about the Wii U, you're doing a good job so far.

Worked for ds.

Well, it's certainly fine if they're trying push casual products like Wii Sports and Brain Training. But i'm talking about them trying to hype a core game like that. Just go find the recent Ghost Recon thread where UBI got the bright idea to have CoCo try to sell the game. Look at the reactions in that thread.

Going through last year's thread, I have to laugh at (a) all the banned tags, (b) all the weird gifs I had forgotten about, and (c) a bunch of folks I don't readily recognize..

Wait.. Conan O'Brien?

I've gotta see this link!

Nintendo has to keep the retailers happy, especially if they are going to offer downloadable titles. But that usually means the prices would be a notch higher for retailers to keep more money in their pockets. Maybe Nintendo is going to eat a lot of costs for retail knowing they will be making their money with their online store?

They are keeping retailers happy by letting them sell downloadable titles, for which they are free to set any price they want. Thus retailers will directly compete with the full titles that will be sold on the eShop.
So it's a win win situation for everyone: Nintendo keeps retailers happy, we get full downloadable games, and there is competition, which means prices won't be locked down forever on DD, instead retailers will offer discounts, pre-order bonuses and other great stuff.

There should be celebrities at E3, but it should be gaming celebrities.

Like Shigeru Miyamoto. Maybe that Kojima guy, too.

Exactly. My bingo card is going to have a spot with Gabe Newell on it to signify the appearance of "gaming celebrities." Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Nintendo partnered with one or more to get a bit of street cred with the cores they're supposedly pursuing.

Nintendo using eminem to appeal to core gamers.
lol

A japanese survey shows/confirms a lost of interest in next generation machines, including the Wii U

Between that + catastrophic sales numbers this week in Japan (post-golden week, ok, but the market state is very low since a moment now) + grim retail sales in the US (NPD) + it's not far better in Europe...

There's a shift in the industry, towards greener/different/evolved pastures (social, f2p, web-based, mobile devices, stream/cloud, digital distribution, yadda yadda yadda), let's hope Nintendo will be able to grab/adapt to it, and above all, bring its approach/own value/innovations/nice touch in the process.
How much is this skewing the results through?
16.3% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.2% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, and 28.0% aged fifty or older.

Oh, shit, I keep forgetting about him. Maybe I'll add "GabeCube" to my bingo card.

Just got a great idea for a comedy sketch in my head where Sony goes, "Oh yeah? Well, we got Nathan Lane and George Stephanopolous for our conference! Core gamers love Nathan and George!"

That Fansite just posted more supposed details about Acid Ghost:

- being developed by one of Kuju Entertainment's teams
- originally intended to be published by Konami for the Xbox 360/PS3
- game features a dark sense of humor
- takes place on a cruise ship
- play as an invisible evil spirit that haunts and terrorizes passengers on the ship
- use the Wii U controller to pick up random objects, grab people's body parts, draw on the walls with blood, turn on and off lights in rooms, mess with passengers tv's, radio's, and laptops, and mess with their food when they aren't looking
- walk into a woman's room while she is sleeping and move her bed into a kitchen
- cover a kid's bed in spiders
- you're rewarded for how much you traumatize the ship passengers
- Each passenger has an individualized personality and characteristics
- online mode
- Kuji made a new demo of the game with Wii U controller ideas to show to Nintendo

Sounds interesting if true, but it ain't gonna sell many systems. Hopefully, Nintendo would have more up its sleeve than that aimed at older audiences.

That sounds kinda interesting. If Passenger 245 is afraid of poop, we could make his toilet overflow, haha!

I'd be interested. Gotta see more.

Question: was the GTA V trailer in real time ??

On PC.

I read that in this voice:

Here are some LinkedIn findings. May or may not have been mentioned some time before.

Also I believe I found the profile that wsippel mentioned before.

I'm beginning to think that the Wii U CPU is a modified Waternoose (Xenon/Cell's PPE) with OoOE. Obviously with more/assymetrical cache as well. Actually no I thought that since the last thread... lol. Lhhere, you still around? =P

So there's a rumor on a certain Nintendo website about a certain white rapper starring in an E3 promotional video for a first-party Wii U title called "Acid Ghost" aimed at older gamers.

Yeah.

So this is the name or codename of Retro's new FPS. Hmm. Edit: Kuju? Well that certainly came out of nowhere.

That's pretty much Geist without the shooting, isn't it?

So its looking like only 2 unannounced games left from the Ubi 7 launch lineup.

Casual:
  • The Avengers (confirmed)
  • Rayman Legends (confirmed)
  • Just Dance (confirmed)
  • Rabbids Game?
    [*]Killer Freaks From Outer Space?

Core:
  • Ghost Recon Online (confirmed)
  • Assassins Creed III (confirmed)

Similar enough, yeah.

If it's true - which it probably isn't - the concept sounds much better suited to the Wii U eShop than a $60 retail release, but the latter would be all too characteristic of Nintendo.

Kuju did a great job with HotD. If it has that grindhouse type humor & design, could be a fun little thing, if it is true.

Yes, the cpu is PPC based, i think this is no surprise, right?

Re: storage
The biggest noticeable advantage a drive has over an optical disc is the access time, not bandwidth, similar to how the access time of a SSD makes a huge difference over a platter drive. Like SSDs are sub .1ms, platter drives around 10ms, and from some quick searching I'm seeing optical drives (DVD and BD) anywhere from 100 to 350ms, I think I saw 440ms too somewhere.

Of course that advantage will vary by game and how they optimize loading. A fairly linear game with predictable loading patterns could get optimized in a way so that data gets loaded in a huge sequential chunk without needing to seek around much, possibly working faster on whatever the highest bandwidth device is, while an open world game where the player could go anywhere and would require random loading of whatever assets on the fly would likely benefit from the faster access time.

That Acid Ghost description could not be more unappealing.
If it had more of a stealth element to it, I'd be more enthused immediately.

For example, if there were ghost hunters in the game, I'd have to ensure that my character remains hidden so that my existence is not threatened.

And one more thing: seeing how this is set on an oceanliner and all, I fully expect a comedic scripted sequence to take place with Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" playing in the background. Anything less would be quite disappointing.

{there ya go, shadyspace: a Cole Porter reference. How's that for old? And who says "oceanliner" anymore? Really? ;) }

For old time's sake, here's Jamie Kennedy at Activision's E3 2007 Conference.

Sounds like the most unappealing game they could think of.

Let's hope that is the case.

We always knew the CPU is PPC-based, but we've all been trying to figure out the base design. Some people still want to go on the "modified/stripped-down Power7" descriptor, but if I look at the puzzle pieces I keep coming back with the posibility of a modified Xenon/Cell PPE ("IBM Waternoose") with all of the added things that you and others have suggested (triple/asymmetrical cache, OoOE, possibly newer SIMD/VMX stuff, etc)

Hence why I asked for your clarification ;)

3 cores, 2 threads per core from what I recall reading.
