Episode 16

Sure, let's go ahead and make the plot even more confusing.
"What have I done, Mom?" indeed.

The Quartz Cannon firing was really damn cool though.

The characters looked pretty meduca at times.

Totally enjoyed the highs and abhorred the lows of this episode. There's a certain level of frustration associated with the lack of resolution re: MYSTERIES, though: at this point you'd think we'd get some clarification regarding some of the plot points, but instead we're left with just more questions.

It's just the niggling sense that the writer/writers have no idea what they're doing. In a better show you can feel everything come together and coalesce, but in Ao's case, it's just falling apart, fragmenting.

I think it's pretty funny how at the ep12-13 point, everything DID feel like it was coming together and the show was on track to go in a new direction after a major and significant plot turn. Then ep14 came along and basically indicated that it was trying to be like Lost instead. I really hope they get it together by the end... ^^;

It's official. I definitely have no idea what is going on now. I thought I was beginning to understand a slither of the big picture and then BLAM
someone got the eraser out.

I hope they used the 2 weeks break to create a clear plot line till the last episode. I know they are trying to create such a twist like E7.

Question(Spoilers of Episode 16)
Isn't it a new fact that the US secretary said the Scub Coral/Secrets had loomed humanity since 'dawn of History'? Wasn't it in the previous episode stated that the Scub Coral/Secrets had started with the appearance of Eureka?

The way they're telling the story is beginning to feel a little bit like a Kingdom Hearts game.

I still dig it a whole lot, but it's a completely different ball-game than the original series...and I'm beginning to fear how it all might come together.

I'm pretty sure they have mentioned that before in previous episodes.

Yup.

I'm pretty sure I remember Georg talking about a Scub that appeared during the XVIIIth century or something, too. In an earlier episode.

Hmm. Just when I thought things were beginning to make sense this happens. Seems a little... Over the top, but I'll wait and see how everything turns out before I judge I guess.

Was I the only one that caught the Suda 51 shirt? Is an animator just a fan of him or something?

BONES animated the opening and ending movies for Suda51/Grasshopper's new game which was part of the Guild01 omnibus title for 3DS. It's the same studio/team which is making E7AO now too, so that was likely a homage to him since they just worked together.

Ah thanks.

Oh. I should have rewatched the earlier episodes in the Olympia break. I am going to do it after I've finished the original.

Edit.: I still hate that
Naru is flying the Type Zero. Maybe it is because I hate her character and I love the Nirvash Type Zero.

Episode 17

Good episode. Like ep15, this is a slower episode with more space for the characters to breath. After last week's new plot twist, they're definitely making an effort to settle the characters and audience into the changes and it's nice to see they're making an effort to at least rationalize things and slow the tempo down a bit. The action scenes this week were pretty interesting as well. All in all I liked it and I think it's good that we have more perspective on the direction moving forward now.

There's a major change to the OP sequence too:
Goldilocks are gone, but there's a frame of what looks like a transformed TheEnd flying in the sky. Hmmmm...

Well, that's pretty much what I thought happened after watching episode 16. I think the anime's been better since it finally got into full swing.

The problem I keep having with the show is my own impatience. We're now 17 episodes in and we still have no clue how this even ties into the original. It's kinda like walking in a foggy swamp and you have no clue how to get back to the road. It's a fundamentally different show compared to the original and I'm not sure I approve. The E7 narrative in the original was probably the least impressionable thing about it. By doing a sequel that is all about mysteries and not the actual characters themselves, it just feels like a spin-off. Where is the character development? The character interactions? If this is just an incorrect world, then why are we not in the correct one after 18 episodes? This feels like an overdrawn prologue that never ends.

I dunno, honestly that sounds like you have no real interest in a new show, but want something exactly like the original. We know that's not going to happen ever, E7AO is a new series about new characters and a new world. It happens to also involve the son of Eureka and Renton, and serves as a follow up to the themes and universe of the original series while telling a brand new story. If you don't like that, well, it can't be helped I guess.

At this point, I'm pretty sure I don't like that.

All I wanted was a nice sequel to the original and to me, this is not it. I'm also not really seeing how this is a follow up to the themes or universe of the original. That one was all about the characters, their relationships and the world they inhabit while this one is all about Elena throwing random references, being nebulously mysterious and just generally pulling shit out its own ass.

I wouldn't have minded if it fleshed out other aspects of the world or even worked as a prequel. The problem here is something similar to Prometheus where it wants to tie into the original mythos but goes about the most scenic/roundabout way of doing it, to the point of confusing the hell out of the viewer. Either you go all-in or you go home. In this case, it feels relatively in-between. Part of the problem is with the writing in that there are way too many plot twists in the show, to the point of there being twists on top of the twists. An alternate timeline and trying to get back would be enough for most series, inside we have five major parties all vying for different things along with a few minor ones, (Naru who wants to protect the Scub Coral, Ao who wants to stay/meet with his mom, Gen Blue who wants to protect people, Big Blue World who are doing their own secretive things, the Japanese who want power I guess, the Americans who want Ao and his mech, Truth who wants to change the world, and the Secrets who want to destroy the quartz), on top of the already existing mythos. This definitely feels like a better executed Xam'd but still having the same fundamental issue in that they're trying to cram too many plot points into way too small of a window and the pacing feels completely out of whack. This then is hurting the character development as the show has less time to really focus and develop the characters, so of whom are really good. If they just eliminated the E7 part of the show, I think it would have served to simplify the jumbled mess that it currently is. I think it would be better as a work (and probably better received critically and sales-wise) if it had just been a completely new IP.

As you put it E7AO is about a brand new world but why should we as the audience care when we are repeatedly told this is the wrong universe? This also ties into our expectations that we want to go back to the original universe, which is why we're watching the sequel in the first place. However we're 17 episodes in and have no clue how Ao is going back to the proper timeline or even if he will. What I keep coming back to is essentially, why does this exist? I'm not talking about financial reasons, in that BONES wants money. How does this work flesh out the E7 mythos/universe? In fact so far it seems like it's making the mythos a jumbled goddamn mess.

I want to like this show as a whole, I really do. However it feels wanting both as a stand-alone series and as a proper sequel.

I dunno, there isn't really much to respond to because I'm enjoying the show as it is. I'm interested in the characters and the world, and I'm also interested in the little hooks they have with the original since I'm a fan of E7. I guess if I actually disliked all the characters and the world in the new series and only care about the original series I would be pretty pissed at this point, but I'm not, so I can't really relate at all.

The show isn't perfect, there are some pacing issues, and the plot twists do get heavy handed at times, but by and large I find it an enjoyable mecha show which happens to be a follow up to the original series. I'm invested in wanting to know what will happen to the characters, and what the mysteries about the world really are. So it's been a pretty nice ride so far, with some bumpy parts along the way.

So am I alone in thinking that the
flying object that replaced the Goldilocks IFO is Renton?
The distortion of Georg didn't sound like the Secret either... It was also the first time "it" address AO directly as well, right?

I've really been putting off getting into this. Loved Gurren Lagann for what it was. Loved Evangelion even though you have to sift through ridiculous crap.

I heard Eureka is also a mech anime. I need a new anime series since Kids On the Slope ended...

This any good?

Zetsuen no Tempest has been confirmed to start on Oct 4 on MBS. It airs every Thursday night at 2 am. That is E7AO's current slot. Lemme put up a chart to show what this means:

Aug 30 = E7AO Ep18
Sept 6 = E7AO Ep19
Sept 13 = E7AO Ep20
Sept 20 = E7AO Ep21
Sept 27 = E7AO Ep22
Oct 4 = Zetsuen Ep1

E7AO is 24 episodes in total. Derp.

The only silver lining is that they could double up the episodes later in September so we get two episodes a week for two weeks. That's what Joshiraku did earlier this month.

This is only 24? I thought it was 50 like the first series. In that case they need to get on with the answers

Two episodes for two weeks would be nice. I guess that's what you get when you take a three week vacation.

If it's true, I'll get the final episodes on my birthday. Nice.

I like this week's episode. It seems Bones is trying to give us answers finally. We learnt what
happened to Eureka, getting a glimpse what Renton is doing or trying to do, what the canon does.
Let's hope we get an answer for the other stuff with the remaining 6 episodes.

Watched episodes 16 and 17, and was pretty satisfied with the reveal for what happened at the end of 16. The Quartz Gun/Massive Seven Swell like attack in 16 was crazy awesome looking too. The series has this pretty insane trend of one episode making you go "what the fuck just happened and why" followed by another episodes that makes you go "Oh. Ok I guess that works." I don't really find that its piling on questions upon questions. There's pretty much one overall mystery throughout the show.

One of the things that I think the show has done really well is show just how important finding Eureka is to Ao. The desire to find her is really genuine and anytime they are on screen together, however briefly, is when the show reminds me of the original E7 the most due to the sincerity displayed. Also, despite not exactly having the hugest amount of screentime, they have done a good job of making the presence of Eureka really loom over the entirety of the show.

Also, I think its fair to say that in the original E7 the Compac Drives were made from Quartz? There's a scene I vividly remember in the original where after Dewey blasted through the coral really obvious green crystals were littered through the Scub. Always seemed obvious that that was the stuff that was mined from the corals in order to fabricate the Compacs, but I guess it has a name now.

50 episodes with AO would be good. Though I think 24 could work, I mean first season had lots of stuff to make it 50 episodes it seemed, with lots of episodes feeling like filler at the end of the day.

Hoping for two episodes for two of the weeks, I hope.

And never noticed that OP change.

Don't you get it? Clearly this means that the series will crossover, Zetsuen will actually take place in the other world! Original Ando/Okada story!

Episode 18

Hmmmm... this episode is kinda odd pacing wise. I find a lot of the Ao stuff just kinda rushed and skimmed over. It would have been more effective if they put a bit more development into his change of heart. I wasn't really convinced.

What I did like though, was the Elena/Fleur development. There's some pretty good stuff there, and it makes them stand out more as individual characters other than "Ao's background harem". It's a pretty uneven episode overall, but not too bad.

There was some great music in it though. At least 2 new super awesome tracks. Mmmmm... :)

I could have done without the dumb extra fanservice though. Kinda lolz. That sort of shit was dumb in Hanasaku Iroha, and it's dumb here too. >_<

Dead

The pandering in this show is just mindbogglingly gross. These are like 12 year old arent they? Super creepy.
Really? Its pretty half assed compared to almost everything else these days.

If anything the problem with the fanservice in this show is that 1. its too tame and obviously out of place to seem like it would actually appeal to the people who usually like that shit, and 2. despite how little of it there is, the mere presence of any of it would turn off fans of the original show. Nobody wins.

Its kinda the trend with BONES though. They've been more open to including fanservice lately, but they kinda half ass it, too tame for the freaks, and yet too out of place for the everyone else. This ain't Sunrise or Gainax, that's for sure.

I don't know, I don't watch enough anime now-a-days to know whats tame or not. I just really don't want to see preteens in theirs bras and panties or shots of them jumping out of the bathtub naked.

Episode 19

Decent episode, but it works as a set up episode for bigger things to come. I like how several characters just came out and finally confirmed some of the things we more or less figured out weeks ago. With some of those threads out of the way for now, the show can focus on tying the larger plot elements together into the climax... hopefully. The art this week was kinda sub-par, but the last scene was pretty nice. Some BIG shit is probably going to go down next week though. It's about time. :p

Ep 19

Nooooooo, no no no.!!!
Truth better not be gone, what was Christophe Blanc thinking! That is not acceptable at all!

Pretty good episode I think, didnt someone predict one of the events at one point in time I thought
Truth being a secret?
. Hope Ao gets back in the spotlight, and was there an Evangelion reference along this moments?

Yes, she basically imitated being crucified.

I wonder what exactly
the secret told Truth. It seemed like it was something different from what they told the humans and it really upset Truth. Though maybe it was the same thing they told the humans and Truth is just turning into Kuja where he found out he was just a worthless puppet and his aspirations meaningless.

So, to recap:
-Elana is from our Earth.
-Truth's plan was to escalate the conflict between the secrets and the scub to make them destroy the world.
-This universe's allied forces are even dumber than ours.

Enjoying it as always. Pacing is good overall, and there's good momentum to the story. However, it's sort of becoming increasingly obvious that the connections to the first series are going to be really back-heavy.

We still haven't really figured out what's going on with Eureka, all this alt-world stuff, Elena's role, Renton's inevitable appearance, Type theEND, the Nirvash final form in the opening credits..etc.
We know it's all coming in some form or another..I just hope it isn't meshed together in a single mindfuck of an episode...

Actually, never mind. That could be cool.

Wait wait wait.

So sure, it's nice to have complete validation, but
we've known that Truth was a Secret ever since Eureka came. HOW IS THIS NEWS?!? When Truth's arms became gigantic Secret arms while he was fighting the two Nirvash's, I took that as being the validation. Did I miss something that it was a big secret that he was a secret and that Naru was turning into a Corelian?
I thought that was the big point of it all. It feels like we're still going in circles by not answer the actual god damn important questions.

Also
Truth's not dead, he's in the eyecatch for this week's episode.

Episode 20

Erm... what did I just watch? :(

----

Edit:

Really disappointed by this week's "big reveal" episode. Once again things feel half-assed and randomly thrown around just to "excite" instead of having proper development and revelations. It seems that Aikawa is more interested in just making people feel confused or surprised rather than telling a good story. The way the story flows is so schizophrenic in this show. Sometimes they're able to actually have good developments and character moments, and yet other times it just feels like typical high concept but shallow TV junk. I would love to have another episode like ep1 or ep13 again.

I'm not really expecting much out of the remaining episodes story-wise, I just hope there's some good mecha action. Even that is suspect, considering the inconsistent production values. It might not even matter, since they're not going to broadcast the final two episodes anytime soon anyway. But at least I don't feel that invested anymore. The wait would be far worse if this actually turning out to be an amazing climax. Lolz.

Meh. :/

This is what the show has more or less become.

Also, that's four episodes in a row they've had a shortend, voiceless preview.

What the fuck is Bones doing?

Also also,
you goddamn fuckers teasing us with theEND again like that for all of three seconds, then rubbing salt in the wound with Truth and his stupid new "archetype"
.
