First Wii U update is at least 1GB / CLEAN OUT YO FRIDGE

Only for those where this is their first console launch

I was just fucking around, being lighthearted as in my mind, this is an inconvenience but nothing to be so angry about.

I'm patient though.

If it "bricks" systems, this is awful for those people but otherwise, I have no real sympathy for those that can't wait a few to more hours.

I do it all the time charging my 3DS.

I'll be surprised if the PS4 and 720 have Ethernet ports. WiFi is going to be the default on all these systems and they will need to cut costs anywhere they can and the Ethernet port will get the axe.

1GB download is going to be very painful on Day 1 of release because the servers will be under a tremendous load.

Do you know how many people use Ethernet ports? a LOT of people.

A lot of people also have slow connection when using wireless while playing multiplier.

I played Super Street Fighter IV and MVC3 with my Wifi connection and never had any issues.
All my PC online gaming is through WiFi too. I dont even think I own ethernet cables anymore

The connection requirements for fighters highly depend on the kind of player you are. A three bar connection in AE2012 has no noticeable input lag at all and is fine at a face value, but attempting one frame links with strict timing is nearly impossible.

I don't think it's Nintendo that's throttling the speeds. It's more likely the servers are taking a hit with tens of thousands trying to download a gig of data simultaneously.

But I'm pretty sure there weren't that many downloading it when the guy had his stream.

It took a really long time for him.

I still have everything running with ethernet cord. Its actually a shock to me everyone is acting like its outdated tech. Which is why it was a surprise to me Wii U didnt have one. But most in here are doing Ninty's job for them when it comes to defense of missing features.

You guys don't understand that the update is probably because it was in development and testing until now. Game discs go to manufacturing month before and consoles more months.

Use brains, i think this whining is unnecessary and invalid argument, it's always those loud unpatient fast-paced lifestyle freaks.

What are you on about? Having to wait HOURS until you use your system, and probably risk bricking it if something goes wrong, after you buy it and plug it in is something that should never happen. And it's a totally valid concern.

Nintendo fucked up. They could have solved this problem in different ways.

Hopefully the throttling is only because of day 1 updates and mass downloads. I would hate downloading games at ~300kbps.

Nah, I stick by exactly what I said re: iPads. People buy vast VAST scores of consumer electronics every single day that get on the internet only with WiFi, and they all manage to survive without this level of righteous indignation. I'm just patronizing you with that feasibility line. I live in the middle of Chicago and I download reliably over my Wi-Fi at 1.2MB/sec, so don't give me a big city sob story. Buy a better router.

It has nothing to do with shilling for Nintendo. I just don't give a shit about Ethernet, and think anyone thinking it should be expected is delusional, given the present-day state of the port on many electronics. I'll certainly side with anyone complaining about the lack of optical out, though. Patently braindead omission, there.

Buy a better router? Please say you're fucking with me? I have a 20 Mbps connection on Ethernet and less than 5 with wifi here and trust me it is not my setup.

You aren't even consistent. Buy an HDMI receiver. Optical out is so old school.

The majority of people would benefit more from an Ethernet port than from Optical Out. I don't want to deal with lag spikes and whatnot. Like it or not, wireless is more unstable than wired. I don't want that instability anywhere near my competitive fighters, shooters, etc.

Exaclty.. And not everyone has a wireless n router... This thing is also a streaming media device, no excuse for no ethernet.

So what happens if Sony and/or Microsoft go the game streaming route and don't include an ethernet port in their consoles?

It's not outdated tech when it comes to game consoles. Fighting games especially are a bitch with wireless.

Let's see here. Twenty bucks on Ethernet adapter? Or hundreds on a HDMI receiver? Yep, same deal. I concede to you completely.

I have wireless but it's crap where I play games.

Seriously the hate for Ethernet makes me sad. Why can't we have both without having to pay more?

Well something's going on, sure. I'm just more likely to assume Nintendo bandwidth throttling than large size, given the evidence from that other guy's download.

Their servers suck, but yeah probably throttling. But again, I've been going at this since 7:30PM. Should have been at least half way before 9PM when they theoretically would start doing so.

Do you know how many people use Optical audio? A lot of people do. It didn't stop Nintendo from not including it. It wasn't even included on the 360. Thankfully you can buy a separate adapter for the 360.

I think this is bigger than 1gb. I am 40% done an hour in. This is big

Are you tracking actual bandwidth usage? It's not likely Nintendo is sending you the update at your max download speed.

he's right you know... WiFi is plenty good, I don't even bother with wired unless the thing doesn't have wireless. Sure, because WiFi is so ubiquitous, you have tons of crosstalk with other wireless networks, change your default channel to something other than 6... WiFi is not to blame here.

EDIT: lol, sorry didn't read your earlier post. that being said, I've lived in NYC and my WiFi was fine.

Only so many Wi-Fi channels to go around.
Wi-FI congestion is a problem, just because you are lucky does not mean a damn thing!

Ethernet is standard on a lot of things, no one is being "delusional", you are just being childish.

It may be throttling more with more people downloading. Someone open an internet activity program that checks your internet activity speed and see what's going on.

It's not an either or situation, I'm just fine with its exclusion.

And i think its pretty fucking stupid, at least for console manufacturers interested in the core gaming crowd, or heavy streaming/download services. But this is Nintendo we are talking about.

I have bandwidth logs on my router, and I'm at about 260MB with what looks like around 25% downloaded. So my guess is that the update is right around or a little over 1GB. I can update once the download is finished.

Dude, there is no slow connection when you play wireless on a regular home. Unless you are really far far way from your router.

You just told me to buy a new router. You're consistent in your inconsistency.

I bought my HDMI receiver for 250 dollars two and a half years ago.

Nah, you're right, I'm being a dick. Sorry. I was goaded into it by being called "blindly obedient" to Nintendo, as if it's the only reason I could hold an opinion. It's hard to break the tone of an argument once it's set.

Generally I would agree with you, except for the fact I was downloading things wirelessly (same network) on my main computer before we started to update the Wii U. Very quickly (games on Steam, etc.).

EDIT: Also, no matter how slow the update is going, with my connection, there's no excuse for taking 3 hours to reach the halfway point!

I'd hate to suggest this, but since others have already been able to finish the download, would it be feasible to restart the machine and try the download again? Or has it already said it was "updating"?

Exaclty.. And not everyone has a wireless n router... This thing is also a streaming media device, no excuse for no ethernet.

There's no lie that it's better to have than to not have it, but unless you're an engineer and know this for a certain fact, it reaks of sour grapes to say there's "no excuse" for its exclusion. This thing isn't a giant 360 or PS3, the back is quite packed with ports already, so... where do you suggest they put it? There's a reason that the vast majority electronics devices don't stack ports overtop of other ports and why they line up horizontally.

I've done that. Restarted it a few times. Restarted router, modem, etc. Handful of times. Also tested downloading a few other things and was fast as it usually is. Nintendo just hates its employees clearly. ;p

Are you usually the only one using your network? I sometimes play using wireless on my laptop or ps3 but playing heavy multi games I certainly notice increased latency for instance playing natural selection 2 wirelessly I get occasional lag spikes which are completely non existent with Ethernet, also b cautious about how well many games mask their latency. I have a brand spanking top of the line linksys n+ router. If you're the primary user in a small household no probs but I have a flat with multiple wifi users. I always feel better with wired connections despite any perceived issues anyway. I will b mad and really surprised if PS4/720 go wireless only

Considering that there's inconsistency, I could only hazard that certain regions are hit with this problem more than others, depending on how many people in your region are polling the server simultaneously?

Still, it sucks. I'm worried about what it's gonna look like when I do the update tomorrow morning when there are more people awake.

I don't know, but I do say good luck tomorrow when the masses get their hands on them. :(

yeah I finally bit the bullet and bought an hdmi 1.4 receiver about six months ago. I was so pissed when I realized that I needed a new one to get surround sound via optical. I installed a sound card and still couldn't get it right, so I caved and got a $300 Denon at best buy. I consider that pretty cheap, after paying $500 for a Denon with optical back in 99.

It does sound better than optical, but it's not the wow moment I had going from analog to digital back then.
