Pokemon is the ultimate in hype letdown. They'll give you a 3-month countdown, Durango style, for a silhouette of the Pokemon Dash logo. When they've got something substantial to show, they sorta just show it (in the form of a silhouette on Pokemon Smash or CoroCoro alongside a week countdown to additional info).

We've got Genesect giveaways pencilled in for the next few months, so I'm not expecting a Wifi giveaway to be announced here.
Unlike previous gens, the main team hasn't had to worry about making a third version, with the remakes team handling BW2. They also got 3DS dev kits particularly early; they've almost certainly been working on Gen VI I'm some capacity since before BW wrapped.
Every bit of evidence we've had over the past year or two, from anime to Pokemon reveals to release strategy, suggests Game Freak have been working towards this year.

Pokemon Black/White was announced in Japan like in May, and came out in September.
So if we're getting an announcement in January, it'll be around June or so.
The Pokemon Company tends to announce their games only a few months before they come out.
Ruby/Sapphire had a whole new region and 135 new Pokemon, released 3 years after Gold/Silver. Seems highly possible.

I'd honestly say it's more likely they'll reveal the first Gen VI Pokemon here (the rumored Eevee evolution?) before revealing the new game, as they've never revealed a new game before revealing new Pokemon.
But with Gen V, we got Zorua and Zoroark, the first ones, in February and then the games announced around May or so.

It's highly unlikely that they'll change the core gameplay at all, outside of new strategic elements.

Pokemon is always a fourth quarter release for Japan, though. They'll probably tease it for a few months before the big reveal I guess.

By the time this releases I'll be so far behind.

Don't be so hard on yourself, just jump in whenever you want to and enjoy. Plus they are always aware this could be someones first game or first in awhile so they set it up well for that.

You don't need to start at specific games if you don't want to, Pokemon isn't something you have to play every game before the latest one just to play. Start wherever you want.

I wonder if we're getting a special Nintendo Direct: Pokemon Edition for this, given that it's going to be a global announcement as opposed to one done through exclusively-Japanese media like previous games.
I'm glad the bridge between English and Japanese Pokemon has been shrinking. It's the biggest series they've got next to Mario and Zelda, and it needs to be presented globally like those franchises are with little distance between domestic and foreign release.
