I really want to see what will sony do to make it different from the wiiu gamepad. But thats just me dreaming, it'll be something like what the move was to the wiimote.

Wasn't the rumor just a few days ago (from a credible source, if I remember correctly) that the PS4 would be revealed some time after March? I want to get hype about a reveal within weeks but I don't know if I should.

Better but also useless?

The Dual Shock has not just been the PlayStation controller ever since PSX launched in the mid 90s, it is also a natural evolution of the SNES controller.

Fear of change is normal, but i really hope they do not change things just to change them, but instead actually can improve on it.

Better triggers, VITA Dpad and improved sticks. Keep the same size, i like it when my hands have breathing room, instead of clutching the controller tight

You're are doing a very flawed comparison. The market is completely different then it was 13 years ago. Sony's two main competitors either a) had no userbase b) had the worst third party support in it's history. None of these advantages that Sony had applies to Nintendo today. Not to mention that the ps1 was the undisputed king in third party support, while the Wii was the opposite.

Third parties couldn't care less about a big userbase if there isn't a market there to sell their games.

Third parties actually did pretty well with the Wii, particularly Ubisoft, Activision, Sega and Capcom. And the Wii U will be able to supply up-ports and receive down-ports to and from the other consoles this gen. The main problem with the Wii was that it had a nonstandard rendering pipeline, the U doesn't have this problem thanks to Nintendo finally ditching their TEV Unit in favour of traditional programmable shaders.

And despite publishers and retailers doing their usual with having new gen software priced at ridiculous levels games like ZombiU, Sonic Racing, Assassin's Creed III and Black Ops 2 appear to be selling reasonably well going by the size of the communities on Miiverse.

Of course if a publisher decides not to include a U SKU for a multiplatform title then it can't be the lead platform but if there is a U SKU then it makes sense to have it as a lead for the reasons I've given.

I like this. I'd move select/start to group around the center PS button, with enough space that you don't hit them accidentally.

The PSX didn't launch with the Dual Shock controller.

Love this design.

I think both select and start would be included inside the screen as buttons.
Maybe the PS button too (I'd prefer to turn on the console pressing any button, or the screen).

I'd use concave analogs like in 360. Other than that, I'd maybe prefer just a Vita inside a cool grip with extra triggers, or at least to allow to use it as a normal controller for everything (universal cross controller).

I prefer the idea of the splittable controller for Move btw.

Going by what the rumor said about how many revisions the controller has been seeing, I wouldn't be surprised if the one that's initially revealed doesn't end up being the final product. Happened that way with the PS3 after all.

Here's my mock-up:

Literally is just a stretched 360 controller with the Vita's controls slapped on top, but you get the idea. I'm not sure about the placement of the Start, Select and PS buttons. I'm not really keen on them.

In my head it's a tad bigger than your standard controller but not full on WiiU GamePad size. Sort of in-between. Touchscreen would be used for text, social stuff, OS menu stuff both in and out of game and developers could also utilise it for DS-like bottom screens if they wanted to. It's not a massive screen but it could work. Biometrics would just be on the sides and back of the controller where your palms/fingers are.

It is a bit 360-ish I admit. I may try to base it more off the DualShock's design later.

Ok. You join Neptunes.. :p

For aesthetics at least. ;)

Terrible. The positions your thumbs would have to be in to be placed on the sticks. Ugh.

In my head it's practically the same as the 360 controller except your hands are further apart. There's no more reaching to the sticks than there is for a 360 controller now, except obviously it's using Sony's placement of sticks. It probably looks weird because it's using Vita controls and the Vita's sticks are smaller than everything else. That's why it might look uncomfortable.

So if you find the 360 controller comfy in terms of analog sticks and stuff, then my vision should be fine.

They're way too low and not much handle is there to grip [in that mock-up]. You'd have to have your hands lower than on 360 or DualShock to have your thumbs positioned right.

Not pure anymore!
The rumor states that you're going to be able to use your PS3 controller if you want to because of Bluetooth. So Sony should shoot for the moon here. People are going to bitch no matter what they show and even they know that.

I'd be happy with that! I love DS3.

EDIT: freakin hate 360 analog sticks layout!!! I hope they don't copy it.

How about that? Just imagine slightly bigger sticks.

And thanks for the comments guys :p

That would be beautiful to have although I do like the DS3's shape more than the 360 controller.

No matter what happens, people need to be patient and not jump to conclusions that the controller is somehow uncomfortable and sucks for certain games without trying it. If it's functional and comfortable, that's what matters the most even if it doesn't resemble the DS3.

Sadly, people will write it off immediately just because it isn't the same damn thing and this forum will be nuts once it's revealed. Too many people jump on the negative bandwagon before even giving any changes a chance really.

Is the touch screen on the controller looking pretty likely, then?

you know, this doesn't look that bad at all. nice work :)
as long as the screen is multitouch and actually has a nice resolution for something released in 2013, i guess i could give it a try, even if i just want some incremental updates to the dualshock. news that you can still use ds3 are great though.

It'll either have a touch screen or touch pad.
Cool, thanks. This thread and the other one (how is that one different?) are a lot to keep up on.

I'm down with a touch screen controller. It's not of huge importance to me, but there's definitely some very cool possibilities. As long as it is used to good effect, and not as a pointless add-on.

Don't really know yet. Wii U-style stuff?

Problem is it hasn't even been long enough for devs to come up with novel uses of the Wii U gamepad IMO. I'm sure ideas will spring up.

But the wiiu stuff is 5x as big. This is just a small little screen, probably even smaller than an iphone. People want to play games on that? You can barely select anything on that.

Screen looks tiny, what would even be the point of that ?

Plus to use the analogue sticks would not be comfortable at all.

It could be useful.

Parties, invites, text messaging, selecting songs to play in-game, checking your friends list, keeping track of trophies, using the webbrowser for guides, etc.

I just hope Sony totally ignore all the Motion/Touch hysteria that has been going on lately and just keep and use the DS3 as their controller for PS4 :)

True. If it were this small, maybe it would be for inventory etc. Good point.

Maybe the other mockup (a la Wii U Gamepad) is more probable?

In certain situations it is -- particularly browsing a web store easily, typing in information.

I suspect this is what will be the utility of the touch screen - applications where touch is easier to navigate than a typical controller interface. Sony wants to make it as easy as possible to buy content on the store, and you can only really do that with a touch interface.

Sony could also keep all the social features and a large number of UI elements on the tablet rather than the main screen. No need to "pause" the game while sending a friend request.

I also think the bigger goal is to allow PS4 games to stream to the controller when you're not in the same room as the TV (similar to Wii U), and also as a portal to Vita software.

It seems to me all arguments for putting a touchscreen on Sony's next controller comes down the three reasons none of which actually improve game experiences: nongame apps, in-house portability, and trying to save the Vita. Motion controls would be so much better.

Crap, I totally forgot to put the speakers on it.

But yeah, I understand people's concerns with the screen being too small. I honestly don't know myself what they'd do with it other than OS stuff, social things, typing and whatnot. But at the same time, I can't see them going for something like the Wii U GamePad. Maybe it will just be a Vita of some sorts instead.

Definitely disagree there.

I dont' think there'd be much of a point to a controller with a small screen on it. I think it'd be more seamless to keep your eyes on the tv to access the in game "xmb."

But having touch screen keyboard and menus would be pretty damn nice.
