VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

Peripherals:

Evolved Dualshock controller
Dual Camera
Move controller

What the hell, so will this come with a camera and a move controller as well. Also what do they mean by evolved Dualshock

They're having another go at redesigning the wheel. And when the Internet rages they'll just revert to the old design again. All I care about are better triggers. Those things sucked on DS3/SIXAXIS.

Only thing surprising here is that it's only a 6x Blu ray drive and no BDXL support out of the box. All the rest is exactly what we've been hearing other places.

500Gb harddrive is nice. Hopefully it's more than 5400RPM.

Hopefully, but even if it's not it would be alright if they give me the option to put in any HDD I want. No proprietary bullshit pls, just like with the PS3.

You won't see BC because they will make far more money having all the PS3 games on PSN be released over the PS4's lifetime. This is abundantly clear with PS1 and 2 classics on PSN.

Everything about this system sounds great so far. I REALLY hope there is only 1 sku. Just... is 399$ a possibility with these specs?

Which would be a shame because the boomerang controller would likely have been better than the DS3.

wasn't that 176G/s bandwidth basically made up here on GAF a few days ago after someone suggested the 192G/s is an old figure or something? this article sounds fishy imo :p

Wasn't made up. It was a logical estimation, and BruceLeeRoy confirmed it through his source.

I wonder if Sony will do a subscription model like Microsoft did. I think we can see Microsoft continuing the subscription model next gen.

They probably don't know.
I sure hope they have some form of BC, otherwise the console is a lot less attractive at launch.

Likely doesn't have BC, especially given the SoC design. Also, regarding move, might be that patented split dual shock design. Ie DS4 can be split in to two move controllers. Who knows.

Is there hope that the GPU will be beefed up a bit ?

As it stands it's a good budget machine but from Sony I expected a "cutting-edge" console, but as I've said on page 1 it's still a nice improvement over the PS3.

How does what we know about the GPU compare to a GTX680 ?

Orbis 1.8 TFlops
680 3.1 TFlops
7970 3.8 TFlops

And that's without Overclocking.

The really bad thing is there is going to be new GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD this year.

Err, ps1 and ps2 classics are emulated, not ported. That example actually proves you wrong.

Contrary to popular belief, selling ISO dumps of classic games is more profitable than porting those games individually and selling them.

You think Sony is going to release a system without a motion controller as standard when it's a given that MS will launch with one? THAT would be suicide.

MS will launch with one because I'm pretty sure they are going to push Kinect as the new "remote" (it suits the mediabox rumours). It's not the same for Move.

thanks for the laugh
So tech gaf is this good or bad? I'm not planning buying a 720, I love my 360 but MS is full of BS these days.

based on these rumours? it's good for digital foundry. looks like it's all coming down to 4 GDDR5 vs. 8GB DDR3 + SRAM on the HW front.

And when you consider that the playstation 4 is designed to last another 7-10 years that amount of RAM looks extremely and i mean extremely pitiful.

In an ideal world they should be targetting upwards of 8gb.

Sony electronics should really take charge here instead of SCEE.

4GB GDDR5 not enough?....is better than the 8GB GDDR3 RAM on durango...

Don't bother, people refuse to look at the facts and continually think that

8GB DR3 is > than 4 GB of GDDR5

It's just too difficult to differentiate the numbers from actually specs... 8>4 yes! : /

All you see is numbers and think that more is better.

8GB RAM seems better than 4GB, right?

Except the 4GB of PS4 RAM is GDDR5 whilst the new Xbox RAM is DDR3.

Very big speed difference (i.e. PS4 has faster RAM).

Those expecting either one of these consoles to be ridiculously more powerful than the other will be in for a big disappointment.

What makes you think it will be under $400 and profitable?

IMO: APU $100, ram $50 [way less if its WideIO on interposer], bluray $30, hdd ~$40, rest $150-180 [mobo, psu, southbridge stuff, cooling, manufacturing] . It will be profitable at $400, or sold at minimal loss.

Yeah, I mean that.

Since they have now 2 teams I guess that whatever is shown for PS4 will be more advanced in development.

I'm pretty certain the PD teams have something suitably large prepared for the PS4 unveiling ... they're bound to have modelled many more 'premiums' in the couple of years since GT5 and we already know they've scanned/modelled Silverstone, Willow Springs and Bathurst.

That sounds like an absolutely foolish decision, if true.

It would be smart. Bundling kinect with every unit makes no sense since they can't make money on it. And MS's core audience doesn't give a shit about motion controls. They can just bundle kinect with whatever kinect software they have and sell it separately.
