PS1 games are cross-compatible between PS3, PSP, and Vita (well most of them), as are the save files (actually the save files are even compatible with PS1 memory cards). It'd be nice if they unified Virtual Console so you could play VC games on both the Wii U and 3DS.

This can't be stressed too much!
I want to play Luigi's Mansion dammit!!!

I don't think that's what he meant. At least I hope not since that is a completely illogical and unreasonable request. Unless you live in magic land or all systems were designed with that in mind.

So much good stuff in here. Being able to auto download and install game updates whether the system is off or you're in game is pretty great.

Network maintenance on all Nintendo systems on Monday and Tuesday so I guess Wednesday is indeed a lock for the update and Thursday for VC.

Bish loves my games!
not having a debit card in this day and age is unfathomable and if he really doesnt then he could borrow one off a friend surely

Its not unfathomable, however if they're looking to purchase digital goods from an online store in 2013 I agree it is reasonable to assume someone in their proximity should have a card.

Not going to give them a pass until they see that forcing you to repurchase the same game multiple times is ludicrous. The Wii->WiiU VC charges of $1.00-$1.50 per game is straight up corporate greed.
They do see that, which is why Nintendo isn't forcing you to repurchase them.

This... If Nintendo forced you to pay for this update before you could play your games that'd be one thing... the fact is you CAN still play the old ones via Wii mode makes this kind of a non-issue.

It's kind of like getting upset when you'd spent money on a piece of software, then a new version comes out and they want you to pay a fee if you want to upgrade. In a perfect world, your purchase should enable you to always have the latest version of software for free... but that's not always how it goes.

it has to be one of the dumbest things i've seen nintendo do. they'll still sell new copies from adding the features. i can't imagine the amount of $1 purchases they sell will add up to anything significant. it's freaky stuff.

Over the course of an entire consoles lifespan as people upgrade and transfer over their stuff? Of course it will. MiiVerse is one of the pillars of the system and having a huge void of non compatible games that they make available every week does not push that system benefit is a bad move. The price is to justify the engineering effort, which over hundreds of games i am sure will be at least somewhat significant by the time they kind of abandon VC in 3 years when all the good stuff is out.

Impossible that they would give away such incredibly advanced capabilities for free, especially on such an inferior last gen system. Inconceivable. In fact I refuse to accept such charity without paying a monthly fee.

You have to pay for these features on other consoles?? Background installing? Are you really serious?

There's like 409 Virtual Console titles released on North America's Wii Virtual Console (not counting the ones Nintendo may have removed from the service).

Here's the breakdown according to Wiki:

NES: 93 titles
SNES: 68 titles
N64: 21 titles
Sega Master System: 15 titles
Sega Genesis titles: 75 titles
TurboGrafx-16/TurboGrafx-CD titles: 56 titles
NeoGeo: 51 titles
Commodore64: 9 titles
VC Arcade: 21 titles

Correct me if I'm wrong but background installing doesn't exist on any other system. Heck, last I checked background downloading doesn't either. Last I checked my PS3 sure didn't do either. Nor does it do standby installing or have a way to charge a controller while off.

Automatic updates are a PlayStation Plus feature.

I wonder still if Nintendo has a fee model coming in the future
glad these things are free but would like to see what a premium service would be

the only thing I hate on my Wii U is Nintendo TVii

the second thing is Nintendo Chat this one I like it have not hate for it like Nintendo TVii (which I hate because it does not work for me)

Video Chat is just not easy to use my only experiences with it is calling CheeseM in Japan which was really cool

I don't think so. Nintendo has often spoken out against the subscription model, stating it's not right to charge people for services on the console after they have already spend a substantial amount on it.

I'm keen to see if this improves in-game performance. The latest 3DS update fixed a bunch of issues in several games and Nintendo didn't even make a mention of it - just a few GAFers started noticing that some of their games had smoother framerates and faster loads.

I like to get up in arms as much as anyone but I just can't about this. You can transfer your old VC games from your Wii to your Wii U for free, which appears will not be possible on either the PS4 or 720. You can pay a dollar for extra features if you want, or you can play them the same as you always have at no cost. Also, it's a dollar. A dollar.

Nobody said anything yet about PSOne titles on PS4... PS3, PSP, and PS Vita... One purchase valid on any of those systems.

Also, some people might not like to be nickel and dimed for things. Only a dollar? Well, considering the price of the game and the features they add it feels like being overcharged. For many people the mindset with VC purchases is that you buy the content and if the platform holder supports BC or enhanced BC it is something they add on top of it on their own. I do not even think you can hide new iOS devices or SDK features under a paywall on the Apple Store even if you wanted to.

I feel this decision by Nintendo is perfectly in line with other even more anti-consumer/backward practices such as tying your digital content to an HW, removing optical out from Wii U, and as people said earlier in this thread reselling NES ROMS to 3DS users. Sometimes Nintendo treats their customers a bit like ATM machines, even more than they usually are by MS and Sony.

The bolded are the ones where I hope to see a change. There are actually more Genesis games on Nintendo's own Virtual Console service than there are Super NES-games! Including some (imo) inferior Genesis versions of games that were originally released for SNES as well. The SNES count should be closer to NES, and N64 should at least be doubled. And I can't wait to see how N64 games will look on the GamePad screen. You better include the N64 on the Wii U VC, Nintendo...

There is also something else that comes out each month with PS+... Hum... Ahh, yes... Free full games ;).
Also, the same subscription and features work on both PS3 and PS Vita.

And yet they still lock a software feature like this behind a paywall. Just because they're offering you a wider array of extravagance as part of the package, it's still a paywall, just a more easily justified one.

Forget that, what about the VC Arcade?! There's tons of stuff that had the best version as coin-op arcades, and a bunch of stuff that could be released that never got a home version on Nintendo consoles.
That's the one that needs the most improvement.

I agree, cloud saves and storage can belong behind the paywall while patches and OS updates downloads should not... and it is not even something they should do to make their consumers happy, it is something that would benefit software publishers/developers and themselves even more than it would please consumers not to have to pay for them. Making the patching process for the games and the OS transparent and frictionless is good for their parties and Sony and it would make the games and the platform more appealing too.

The Friend List should either be removed or integrated into Miiverse. I shouldn't have to access a separate app just to see which friends of mine are online.

Well it needs better integration or next-to-no delays when trying to access it. Or both. A list of people online/offline shouldn't be that hard to pull down quickly.

fingers crossed for folders

as VC on eShop grows yeah this will be important I don't see them passing this up the icons maybe different but the function will be of great value

as for the 400+ VC games the Wii has I hope they can move them all within months not years

hopefully they get smart about an account system and friendlist limits as well

we should be able to know what the summer update is closer to E3 anyway

I feel great about future services on Wii U because PS4 services will put a lot of pressure on Nintendo to improve what Wii U offers in Japan

Nintendo will never be able to match Sony service for service but in the end we will end up with far more from Nintendo on Wii U if PS4 was not there this year

I think the 3DS apps are a good sign of what to expect can't wait to see swapnote on Wii U deeply connected to Miiverse

Sony is arguably doing far worse than that: they reintroduced PS2 BC by software, but will not allow you to use the games supported by the emulator even if you own the disc. No, you have to pay full price for them, not even a reduced fee as Nintendo is doing with previous Virtual Console customers.

Of course I agree that in an ideal world those VC games should be tied to an account, but considering there are actually improvements over what we got on the Wii, and that we are allowed to trasfer and use them for free as they are, I believe is fine being asked for a small extra payment to be able to use an enhanced version on the Wii U.

I can't even form an opinion because Europe still doesn't have it.

my hate for it is two fold I don't have Cable meaning my HDTV does not have many channels worth a damn and the second is my WiFi connection seems to not work with it well
90% of the time it wont load at all

Netflix has just been added to Nintendo TVii which for most people is awesome

I need to see if I can get it to work when House of Cards S2 is out
