Since I clearly am out of my depth with language rules, can someone explain to me why the above is wrong. Why you can't have a soft g followed by an i. Why it has to be a hard G? With giant, the g sounds like a (j) - so jiant. Not (guh)iant. So why can't gif be said as "jif".
