The creator doesn't know language rules then.

Well I'm not an expert on language rules, but that's how it's always been pronounced. And if the creator himself has said that's what it was always, that's what it is.

EDIT: I'm wrong. The majority determines what is the norm, and apparently the majority says it with a hard G (or so this thread leads me to believe).

Apparently, the Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations. It's the creator himself who insists it's "Jif". But just because you've created something doesn't mean you own it, and its interpretation.

Well, for MY entire life, I've heard people say it as "gif"!

Yep.

Languages evolve over time and the general consensus has been GIF for years. So it IS GIF even if it's technically wrong. It doesn't get any simpler than that and it doesn't matter if the creator says it's jif, he doesn't have ownership of the term. Society has and like it or not, pro-jiffers are the minority and therefore wrong. Become the de facto standard by becoming the majority and that will change the language yet again.

Edit: Seems like it's been covered already :lol

You have a statistical analysis to back up that the masses (ie. majority) say it with a hard G?

I don't for the soft g. But my entire life I've always heard people say it as "jif". *shrugs*
gross. That is as crazy as having a silent E or having the worthless U in words like color.

I don't know why we can't all get along. Those saying jif can type jif and say jif, those that know what's up continue to use the correct pronunciation.

Cool, but can you answer this for me then.

First off, I'm not a language expert. I fully admit my ignorance. But with the word giant. It's a g followed by an i and it has a "j" sound to it. Or what I say is a soft g. (J)iant. You wouldn't say it as (Guh)iant. Or what I would call a hard G.

So why can't gif be said as (j)if. Other words that start with Gi have the "j" sound (such as gist). So can someone tell me why the hard g is being used here. Edit: well then again, gimp has a hard g. Fuck it, I give up. Clearly don't know jack shit about this.

I'm done with this thread and its authoritative and incorrect title chanjes. I'm jonna jo play some vidyajames. Jood afternoon fellow jaffers.

We need a NeoGAF poll so we can settle this. GIF vs lolJIF

No, it must be one or the other!

Yeah this. It's not even a debate.

When the creator says it's pronounced "(j)if" calling it "(G)if" is just ignoring what it actually is. Just because you say something is true, doesn't make it so.
It's simply not how language works. People in England can whine all they want how THEY invented the words Americans use, but Americans are going to pronounce them how they want. What's correct is what's accepted.

Same thing here.

you're asking me questions I don't know the answers to, man

the giant example doesn't work anyway as it assumes all "gi" words use a J noise, which ain't true (git)

more importantly it's a sodding acronym

What about other acronyms and abbeviations? For example, GUI (pronounced Gooey). Does anyone have a problem with that even though it isn't Graphics Oozer Eenterface?

Yeah, that's true about it being an acronym.

Whatever. I'm out of this thread. Clearly I'm in the minority, and I'm just coming off like a stupid jackass. And I actually won't argue with that (that i'm a stupid jackass lol). Shouldn't have said anything about this. Because I clearly don't understand language.

I just never knew that the majority always said it with a hard G. I always thought it was split.

what's the next closest actual word?

Gift.

So you expect me to believe that gift = hard g, but gif = soft g?

English never follows it's own rules. To that degree how would you properly pronounce "Gist"? I have an otherworldly friend that happily pronounces "Premise" like PREE-MIZE

Does anyone really not have a problem with GUI that does with GIF? The problem actually applies to two letters versus one in GIF.

However, even though I believe firmly in the "GIF" pronunciation, if you say G.I.F (Ghe Eie Eff) fast enough you'll eventually pronounce it "Jif".
That would work except the Eie should be Eye if your going to use it the way your trying.

Haha, personally I say G-U-I.

Although I wouldn't mind "Gooey" if we also went with "Oosah" for the country.
