TitanFall (EA/Respawn, PC/XB1/360, Spring 2014, Game Informer Leak, All Info In OP)

The game sounds interesting-- a respected team, mech combat, inspiration from District 9, sounds good so far.

But does this mean it's gonna be another Origin exclusive on the PC platform?

I only know maybe 3 friends who care enough to use Origin at all, let alone buy new titles on their inflated store. Kind of a bummer since I'm mainly interested in playing this game with friends. Could be the reason I pass this up.

They thought working on PS4, Xbox One and PC would prove too difficult for a small team, so they decided to focus on one console instead of two. (er...). "Not to say we won't [go multiplatform] in the future, but for our first game we wanted to focus on making the best game we could."

C'mooonnn son. This excuse flew when it came to the PS3 and 360 but now they're almost the same damn thing*.

*I don't know anything about anything other than what I hear incidentally about PS4 and X1 architecture

1 year exclusive is basically the same thing as full blown exclusive, and everybody here knows it. No amount of "I'll wait for the PS4 version" will change that. It's also coming on PC folks, no sense in waiting for an inferior version.

Dedicated Servers run Linux or Windows.

I used the Battlefield 3 example earlier.

A player shoots a rocket at a wall, the servers calculate the damage to the wall, and then transmit that data to the clients. Not difficult, been doing that for years.

This is what Microsoft describes as the 'Infinite Power of the Cloud™'

So Cloud Powered is basically dedicated servers...
Versus the current peer-to-peer connection currently with XBL?

Assuming "Destiny" releases in Spring 2014 also, wouldn't that kill the sales of "TitanFall" if released around the same time? Two always online FPS' except one is available for PS4, PS3, 360, and Xbox One from a developer with a great pedigree

i think titanfalls loses if its exclusive.

battlefield/cod/destiny are all great games with lots of marketing on more platfroms.it limits it from became a bigger franchise

(and thus its timed)

Thanks that make sense. I would be interested in seeing what game would require that much server side calculation that a dedicated server could not handle it. That would be interesting.

When I think of cloud processing I think of increased fidelity for things that aren't able to be interacted with by the player and are not time sensitive. Large scaled A.I combat in zones that the player couldn't possibly reach or interact with for example.

But then questions come into play about how the game would react if the servers had trouble or if you modded the game to go into a noclip state to rush to that area of the map.

No clue, but its clearly only possible in a locked down service like the XBO provides--without mods and in a forced always online environment.

CBOAT never said Mirror's Edge was exclusive in the first place.

Amazon Italy (who also said DA3 was exclusive lololol) is not CBOAT.

If you get my hopes up ONE more time I'm going to demod you!!!! (Or something)

i think titanfalls loses if its exclusive.

This is a good point - those could all, potentially, do huge numbers. Will people be craving another shooter after those 3?

How does that apply to the Xbone? The Xbone will launching with major guaranteed exclusives like Ryse that Microsoft is publishing and Titanfall as a full on exclusive. Meanwhile all Sony gets is a mission on AC4 and something minor dlc for Destiny. That speaks volumes about the relative abilities to secure exclusive content.

T2 got stuck spending the rest of the generation trying to build the PS3 userbase. ie. Being one of the few companies that licensed a character to Sony's poor attempt at a melee game and giving away copies of Bioshock.

we're already having meltdowns? wow.

EDIT: MMOs.. probably?

It's more a matter of efficiency than computing power. No matter how powerfull the server is, at some point connection speed becomes a bottleneck.

"cloud" software allows the distribution of computing power to be dynamic. With a traditional dedicated server the server runs only one specific thing. Whereas in the cloud you run whatever is needed at the time.

Eh, I don't know. The marketing money that Microsoft can put behind this in the Spring when the game release schedule typically begins thinning out could be huge.

no,you can say "betrayal" later and than they abandoned the xbox1 platform......

Yes. But a bit more advanced.

Dedicated server = single thread cpu. Games can't take advantage of more than 1 hardware server at a time.
Cloud = multi-threaded cpu. Game code can be map-reduced to take advantage of multiple hardware servers.

Its MMO type. I cant imagine its an yearly franchise. Honestly that year is not a big deal for MP MMO at least IMHO.

A year start is huge. If all your friends have been playing Titanfall on X1, when holiday 2014 rolls around and there's no PS4 version in sight, guess what console is getting picked up?

EDIT:
Thousands of AI and players with actual physics and game world interaction might require computation jobs map-reduced to multiple machines. Pretty easy to change your game code to do it.

Though I don't think launch games would be doing that.

.. and thank you as well :)

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
One thing about the PS4 version is that it might not gain traction and sales if it comes out a full year late, so the player base might be lacking.

Yeah, any other cloud talk is just smoke and mirrors, but this could work out well. I was also thinking multiple modes including something like assault where it's more MMO-like with players vs. AI controlled teams over a patch of land. You could then potentially have a huge map like MAG, but be able easily access the rest of the battle easier instead of being confined in one area with a specific number of people.

Also it's been shown you can have the Titan be AI controlled instead of you piloting it yourself, so I'm sure some of that will be cloud-processed instead.
The nonsensical part is unfortunately, the PS4 has 50% more GPU horsepower. Which in both consoles are GPGPUs. There is two things those things excell at besides graphics, physics and AI. And a GPU tears through those two tasks compared to a CPU.

So the answer "PS4 impossible" is a flat out lie.

And I don't like lies. I don't like "this speaker is impossible under 20k" lies, I don't like the "this clarinet is really worth 10k" lies and I don't like tech lies. Which this is.

Also, a 1 year exclusivity does not mean it is necessarily coming to the PS4. If the developer chooses to, they can. However, with this they are just locked into the Microsoft platforms and once that year is done, they could do what they want.

It's sort of like the Skyrim DLC. Microsoft had a timed exclusive on that for the 360 but once that was done, it took damn near forever for them to get it on the PS3 due to technical issues.

I don't like the new name. Should have just stayed with Titan. Concept sounds cool though, definitely interested in some gameplay footage.

I'm with you 100%. The availability is not at question...Azure and Amazon cloud stuff has been around for awhile but I don't think a game developer has ever had this level of access to this much computing power. I'm not saying the technology is new at all.

100% agree with U on this... I'm a developer that uses azure and aws.. I can tell U that whilst the two offerings have similar pieces , they radically deviate when it comes to developer tooling and integration. With azure it really feels like you have an operating system in the cloud and can build code that runs in a process at cloud scale.

I definitely feel Azure trumps amazon on the developer tooling integration, and operating system approach in the cloud..

Pretty much agree with this. Especially in this overly crowded genre.

1 year exclusive is basically the same thing as full blown exclusive, and everybody here knows it. No amount of "I'll wait for the PS4 version" will change that. It's also coming on PC folks, no sense in waiting for an inferior version.

Agree with your second point, a number of people will just get the PC version like you said if they have to. Also, the 1 year exclusive IMO meant more last gen when the PS3 came out so far after the 360, those timed exclusives bought MS even more time, if both systems really come out around the same time the PS4 shouldn't be lacking in big games to make up the difference of missing out on one game for a while, unlike last time where the PS3 was trying to build up it's catalog of big games while MS was getting timed exclusives.

So I'm guessing a gold subscription is pretty much required for the Xbox one then. What with most games incorporating online features into single player and the cloud.

Also I'm guessing this is one of the 15 exclusives?

well for a whole game,it depends on the competitors install base....

I know and that´s the intention of my question: i want to know if Mirrors edge 2 is exclusive or not. And so far CBOAT isn`t responding. I take it as a great sign.

All 15 are first party titles, so no.

The 1 year exclusive is an option, not a guarantee here folks. It will be up to Respawn and EA to port it in one year if they wish it. And MSFT can buy the option back too usually.

And since it is a year, it is basically exclusive to PC and X1. Unless for some ungodly reason the timed exclusive means PC too o_0. I would be a sad panda then...

It's pretty to have technical issues in PS4
So if it exclusive more than one year,it will be like because MS think it's very successful so they throw more money to EA&Respawn make it exclusive for longer or even forever

No, those 15 are published by MS, Titanfall is published by EA

Hmm. Is the PS4 Ram not capable of handling the cloud computations they need? They say it was impossible to target current gen... So they do it anyway by giving it to another studio? I just don't get it.

The game looks pretty cool though. PC would be the platform I buy it for.
